SC4 in Coop - Looking for players

Hello there!

I'm on Simtropolis for a long time, however I used it only for downloading things - forum was just an extension, something unnecessary. And now it's time to use it.

Recently, I was looking for game similar to SimCity 2013; game that'd allow me to build cities with my friends. Instead I've found a tutorial on reddit about playing SimCity 4 online. I didn't believe it'll work, but I decided to give it a try. To my surprise it works and I can play with my friends together! There is just one problem: I don't have many friends playing SimCity 4. And so I'm writing here: is there anyone interested in making cities together? I've got much to learn about managing all this stuff, but it's playable already and with some time it will be working perfectly. There are already 3 small cities that will grow bigger with some time, however it would be nice to have more people to play :)

If there is anybody interested, message me and I'll give you link to my steam account, so we could keep in touch.

I didn't think that somebody will reply to this thread, haha. Thank you for the "application". I hope you have at least 1GB of free hard disk space and a lot of creativity :)

Look around, there are other groups.  1GB of free disk is a drop in the bucket these days.  I currently have about 1 TB of empty space.

Maybe it is nothing special, but sometimes you may run out of space (like I do very often, haha). But yes, I believe that there are groups with much more plugins, regions etc. etc.

Can't say I haven't been interested at times in a co-op region, but from what I've found and read, it just doesn't seem like there are enough dedicated people around these days.

According to the Groups section on ST, region play was much more active in the hay days. To bad too, cause with today's comp tech, it's much easier to co-op SC4 over the net.

I would be interested, however, I've become a CC addict and don't know if I could stomach playing SC4 with reduced content tbh.

I belive there are people but they are unaware or dont have contacts. Finding this place was alone challenging.

I got here by a reference on the old Maxis site (now defunct).  Google or Bing finds this site often enough, though, so that it shouldn't be hard to find.

I would like to look into it, but every time I search the internet on "Simcity 4 playing online", I can never find anything.  I even went to reddit and searched there and nothing.  If you could post the link on the tutorial to set up online play that would be great.

It is not very encouraging even to find this place. Look how rarely people post here. Most likely most of people dont bother to post because they see half abandoned area.

I have been posting in steam to people who advertised simcity 4 mp and got nothing back. Can somebody who knows how simcity 4 mp works even give information how to set it up?

I'm definitely interested, but it's going to take a long time to get an agreed upon plugins folder that I'll agree to use, I use well over 5 GB as well as a CAM/SPAM setup. Its not so much finding other players but the combination of finding players that agree upon the mods as well as stick with it for a few years to finish a decent sized region. I would suggest a style maybe that combines peoples regions, but not their plugin folders, basically meaning you could only work on dedicated tiles, you couldn't start a tile and someone else work on it as well, unless plugins were exactly the same

Im not familiar with plugins but why not everybody use NAM? But having a special region with unique plugin sounds like secure password to protect your region.

The drawback to a co-operative region is the Plugins.  I, for example, can tolerate a full installation of NAM (I don't normally load RHW nor GLR), but CAM is not in my list of needed mods.  For one thing it requires modifying the default game residency, which means everyone has to get it right.

There is a considerable amount of individualism in most players that I do not see being submerged in a co-operative region since only one player at a time can access a city tile unless a full transaction processing system sits in and arbitrates conflicting updates.  If you think the game is slow now ...

Then there is the server, which has to be the responsibility of one member of the group.  You need to run the region on a server with full journalling, rollback, and all that or how is anyone's work safe?

I see already what is problem: elitism.

If you simply want to have a nice coop game plugins should not be a major problem. Instead stable host and safe region are.

Well, it's very possible, but you gotta set up a system first. Maybe the Noro Co-op would loan the tool to lock regions so no cross contamination happens. I might CAM/SPAM but if I joined a co-op region, I would be open to dropping one or both, for that region only... But a huge region needs good farms and SPAM gives me what I want, both the look and functionality, but I can use the diagonal field fillers to create to unique shapes, plus the values it uses to simulate the farms help keep farm towns where there are cities nearby... So this is where it begins, figuring out the region and crafting plans, lots and lots of plans. If you haven't check out the NORO thread, really good stuff there!!
