Joensuu Facts

Joensuu was founded in 1848 by the Russian Tsar Nikolai (Nicholas) I.  By 1900 the city was one of Finland's major ports; today the city is less important, with about 54,000 inhabitants.  The city is home to the University of Joensuu, with around 6,000 students, and North Karelia Polytechnic University, with around 3,500 students, making Joensuu an academic center for Karelia and Scandinavia.  Joensuu is also a technological center for its region and a major trading post for Russian-Finnish trade.
