Wexford Facts

    Wexford is a small town located on the southeastern coast of the Republic of Ireland.  The town has never been very successful as a port due to its harbor's tendency to silt up, but Wexford remains the seat of County Wexford today.  Since the early 1900s, the main port of the area has been at Rosslare Europort, 12 miles south.  Wexford was founded by the Vikings in the 800s; they called it Waes Fjord, or Inlet of the Mud Flats, an auspicious name indeed.  Since the 1950s Wexford has been the site of the world-famous Wexford Opera Festival.  The town is also home to one of Ireland's longest bridges.
