Colombo Facts

     The name Colombo comes from the Sinhalese name kola-ampa-thota, which means mango harbor, and also from Portuguese settlers who altered the name to honor Columbus.  The city is the political, economic, and cultural capital of the nation of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), a small island nation off the southeastern coast of India.  Colombo lies on the west side of the island and is home to more than 2 million people.  Colombo is a historically important city, having passed hands between the Muslim Empire of the middle ages, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British, and finally to independence in 1973.  Since Sri Lankan independence, the nation has been marred by civil war and violence between the government and the breakaway Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).  In 1996, an LTTE truck bomb killed 86 people in Colombo at the Central Bank; a cease-fire was signed between the government and LTTE in 2002.

Manila Facts

     Manila, or Maynila, as it is called in Filipino, is the capital of the Philippines.  Over 1.5 million people live in the actual city; more than 12.8 million in the metro area.  Manila lies on the eastern shore of Manila Bay at the mouth of the Pasig River on the Philippines' main island, Luzon.  Manila has the reputation of being one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities.  The actual city of Manila is the country's second-largest city; Quezon City, a suburb to the northeast, is larger.  Manila is sometimes called The Pearl of the Orient.  Despite extremely impoverished areas in the city, it is considered a world-class city.

Almaty Facts

     Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan, a large, though lightly-populated, former Soviet Republic (Kazakh SSR), and is home to more than 1.1 million people.  The name comes from a Russian word meaning Father of Apples, as Almaty lies in the center of a massive apple-growing region.  Almaty began life as the Russian fort Zailiysky in 1854, renamed Verna in 1855.  In 1921 the town became known as Alma-Ata and Almaty in 1929 when the city became capital of Kazakh SSR.  In 1991 the city became the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the charter instituting the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States, an ambiguous post-Soviet commonwealth much like the British version) was signed in the city.  In 1997, the capital was moved to Astana, in northern Kazakhstan; however, Almaty remains the commercial and cultural capital of the nation.
