Congratulations, mies.  Mystery City #10 is Baku, Azerbaijan.

    Baku Facts
Baku is the capital city of Azerbaijan, a former Soviet Republic located on the western side of the Caspian Sea in central Asia. The city's origins are ancient, having been traced to centuries before Christ, although the earliest mention of the city comes from a 9th-century Persian text.  The city was the capital of Persia for many years until it was ceded to Russia in the Treaty of Gulistan of 1813.  Today, the city is Azerbaijan's largest and most prosperous, fueled by oil money and a relatively good economy (at one time, this city's oil fields provided 1/2 of the world's supply).  Baku's Old City is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is walled.  About 3 million people live in Baku.

Also, please note that there is a new point scale in effect, following the guessing of this city.  Please refer to the Mystery City:  Europe thread for details.

Congratulations, mies.  Mystery City #11 is Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

    Port-of-Spain Facts
Port-of-Spain is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago and is home to around 300,000 people.  The city lies on the western edge of the island of Trinidad and is a shipping and financial hub of the Carribean.  Port-of-Spain, as you may have guessed, was founded by the Spanish, who had troops occupying the area of the town by 1560.  The city and islands were Spanish until 1797, when they were conquered by the British, who ruled until 1962.  The city peaked in size in the 1960s at around 100,000 people and has since declined to around 49,000 as its population moves to the suburbs but remains the nation's largest city.

Also, please note that the new point scale will be used with this city.

Congratulations, mies.  Mystery City #13 is Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.  That's good for 20 points.

    Jeddah Facts
The history of Jeddah dates back at least 2,500 years into the past, but the city did not rise into prominence until 647 AD, when a Muslim caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, converted the sleepy village there into a port for pilgrims making the hajj to Mecca.  Besides its fame as a center for pilgrims, Jeddah is also famous for being the traditional burial place of Eve (as in Adam and Eve) in Islamic teaching.  Since its days as a tiny fishing village, Jeddah has come a long way; the last census put the city's population at close to 2.5 million.
