Germs are often in low wealth, uneducated, polluted, or perhaps radiated cities. Having an educated city is your best defense against germs. The Wellness center attachable from the hospital helps fight against germs too.

The best way to combat the germ invasion is to build the wellness centre addition to the hospital. You'll probably need a couple at least - about 1 per 30,000 permanent residents in your city should suffice. Also make sure that your population is well educated. For this you'll need one fully-upgraded elementary school for every 25,000 citizens or one fully-upgraded high school per 75,000 citizens or one community college or university in your city (just one will suffice, regardless of population). Note that you do not need one of each of the educational institutions: once you unlock and place a higher-tier facility, you can shut down or demolish the lower-level one.

Once your city's population gets above 100,000 you'll start bleeding hourly income when you beef up the utilities and upgrade them from clinic to hospital, police station to precinct, etcetera. The easiest way to keep the cash rolling in is to build an expo centre, where you can run an event every day with 200% to 400% return on the cost of the event itself. A more involved method (though far more profitable) is to specialise in manufacturing or mineral and oil extraction.

To remove ground pollution, use a water pump station with filter pumps. After a while the pollution decreases then disapears in the area. I'm doing it right now for a spot where I messed a bit, it's taking really a lot of time.

Expo center is an easy way to make some money, if you want to make lots, build and sell processors. But careful, you will go in the red first, and it's not entirely reliable unless you have a good 2M $ in cash (obviously don't wait for that much money, 500k will do at the beginning). That's to ensure you're not going bankrupt if something happens to your production lines, or if you get into a frenzy cash spending.

As per real world. You leave it to decay the next 20,000 years.

It is on the parks toolbar.  I think the tab is "nature" or something like that and you need to scroll that bar to the right.  You will see a tree with a green up-arrow on it.  That's the tool.

The invention of beer and the wheel were the foundation of modern civilization & together were the catalyst that split humanity into two distinct subgroups: liberals & conservatives. Some men spent their days tracking & killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. These men were called "conservatives". Other men who were weaker & less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's & doing the sewing, fetching & hair dressing. They were called "progressives".

As stated above it takes 20+ years for radiation levels to dissipate just as in real life, it is not a bug.  Although I do think some sort of city services building should have an add on or be created to have a "Radiation clean up" crew or something to help speed up the rate at which the radiation levels drop.

Considering the small city sizes and worker education levels in Nuclear Power Plants randomly dropping to unsafe even when you have a high school and community college I think there should be some way to actively mediate polluted and places affected by minor radiation. I've had several plants placed in corners of the city randomly go to an unsafe worker education level and start to meltdown. Even when I have turned them off at the warning, it still has affected literally 10% - 15% of your whole map with levels of radiation..

How is our fault the game engine simplifies things so much that one person can be an insurance salesman one day and the next morning he goes to work running a nuclear reactor?

Going nuclear I consider to be a high risk/reward option and other than limiting your risk and staying away from the Nuclear power plants as I tend to do I don't know.

Found out that when Sims complain how germy it is on their neighborhood, I had to demolish a building where the ground pollution is the highest and plant trees. I do have to replant them though. I think it took me 20-40 minutes to remove all ground pollution by planting trees. Also I added a filtration pump on my water pump which seemed to help remove the pollution.
