Is sim city 4 still worth purchasing?

SC4 is a classic; a one-of-a-kind.  It's the only city simulator I know of where you can actually build real cities to scale and have them run properly.  A true successor to it is many years away, at least.

SC4 is more of a city simulator; SC 2013 is more of a game.

If you don't mind the always on line features with Origin, why not get both.  SC4 is quite inexpensive from either Amazon or Gamersgate without any on line requirement, and you have to decide if you want to deal with Origin.  Read their EULA carefully then decide.

I got SC4 iI will give it a good shot seeing as last time I had it I only played  couiple of drive missions and then got fed up I think. This time I will build a proper city - which is where its strength lies after all.

I will probably be waiting for months to see what happens to SC2013 to make it better, if anything, but I will keep my eye on it. But anyway I cant see them removing the DRM so that title is pretty much closed to me even if they did reduce the price and expand the city tile size.

I certainly cannot afford to get both not at £45 for SC2013. If SC2013 is reduced to £10 at some point I might take a punt at it and leave my DRM issues at home for a while just to see what its like - for that kind of money you arent losing out much is you hate it. But tbh the only real thing SC2013 has over SC4 is the curved roads and the better graphics. Thats about it for me that I am interested in. That isnt worth £45.

I've been playing for sc4 for 10 years and still am not bored, everything that has come out since that hasn't measured up in my opinion.I really wish they would just take the exact same gameplay from sc4 and just put it in a 3d setup. I could care less about online play.

SC4 is one of the best if not THE best PC game I have ever played. Buy it. Playing for 8 years.

Well, for the first time in years I have rebooted the game and cannot believe the depth and size of the game. Even more so when you compare it to the chaotic mess that is The Sims Village that has just been released to such aclaim. By the reviewers anyway, if not the fans. I have  been waiting for a sequel for years, but have seen Sim Societies, Cities XL, and this latest fiasco all fail to take the game on, which is really disappointing.

Regarding Sim City 4, I have downloaded the patch, but what other mods would you download to improve the game, as I know there are a massive amounts of improvements for the game.

I say go for it! Besides, it's way cheaper than SC13 money wise yet has far greater value in terms of quality and replay. Just look at some city journals and "show Us Your" threads and see what is being done with this.

Note: If anyone have programs such as "Virtual Drive" you can make VCD files of the game and store them away. With this you can also play without the need for the disc to be in the drive.

I want to stress, if you do this, to do it legally with a copy of the game you purchased yourself. I do this myself because in about 2011 my Rush Hour disc became unusable due to wear-and-tear. I somehow managed to make a virtual copy despite the damaged disc.

Sim City 4 is definitely worth a buy because it is a timeless classic. It deserves a spot in the Gaming Pantheon along the likes of Super Mario, Pong, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Doom, Diablo, etc. People have been playing Sim City 4 for ten years with even more interest today than they had when it was released.

Further - Sim City 4 respects your privacy, doesn't try to dictate to you how to play, has better graphics (IMHO) than the new game, as well as all the other issues that have been discussed at length here.

That is not to say the new game doesn't have its potential - many things about it I loved after trying the beta. But, in it's current form, the negative outweighs the positive and I don't expect EA to make drastic enough changes to improve that.

If you load from CD make sure you get your build version up to 1,1,640.  Check the SimCity 4.exe for this version.  Once you are there, you can pick up anything here.

After you have a handle on the game without custom content, add the Network Addon Mod, give it a quick scan because it is big and changes the entire network.  Then play for a while.  Do get the various fixes from the STEX.  Just to a search on 'fix'.

As time goes on, you'll want to add things that suit you.  Perhaps you'd like to have a lot of choice on your desktop, so if you have an optical drive, consider donating a few bucks to the site and get the custom content collections.

YES, it is worth buying. I say just get the game from Steam, since it is really easy, and you can play it nearly immediately after paying. Also, you won't lose the game if you lose the CD.

But if you do decide to pay, get the NAM. It is very easy, just download it here  and load the installer after you finished downloading Sim City 4.

If not, especially as a newbien you will get frustrated with unemployment as people don't travel very far for work in the original version.

Well, my only objection to steam is that it is a DRM vendor.  You can do just as well with Amazon or Gamersgate, and you don't get a funny structure set up by some company who wants to mess with your machine.  The digital download is the same, but you get the regular structure with no steam-this and steam-that.  Saves a couple of directory levels and is just a quick to get going.

I've never played sim city games. I'm interested in the new sim city but heard 4 is better? Is it worth getting or should I wait for the new sim city? Or is it worth getting both?

I may purchase SC13 at a later date once some issues are resolved, but will never give SC4 up. I have since purchased it off steam just because the game deserved it. 10 years later and still playing? The same can't be said about Simcity13..

Just read the rules for the first time and I'm curious as to what rule 7 refers to. Cause in my mind I'm picturing a cd with a crack running down the middle of it :)

....Makes me wonder how many people have actually read the rules.  Anyway, #7 refers to altering the parts of a game that are locked in the exe and aren't supposed to be altered.

 Rule #7 said :
It is strictly and expressly prohibited to post or upload anything referring to CD keys or no CD cracks;
Have you read it carefully, Bdub01?

Now that I got an explanation that kind of stuff is so far above and beyond me I'd have no idea how to do that even if I wanted to :)

Well, I hope all this forbidden fruit discussion was not triggered by reference to creating virtual CDs from a legal copy of the CDs for the game.

There is a difference between using a utility program and piracy.  If it comes on a torrent, it is probably illegal.
