A little concerned about the zoning. I like the idea, but wonder how it's going to work. here in real world we have 7 lane avenues going through low density commercial because of the heavy traffic.....I can just imagine this creating skyscrapers in the game that aren't wanted.

wouldnt this be a hoot........skyscrapers will refuse to grow on 3 lane one-way streets, but have no problem growing on 80 lane commercial strips

I wanted Simcity 4 to grow up, not to be murdered and usurped.

That is rather how this feels doesn't it?

As for changes I've not read any posts that were opposed to changes, in fact I think all of us agree that changes are needful in the game of SC4. According to what has come out to date about the upcoming release there is little resemblance to the original game or game play other than a name.

I agree. Simplifiying or something like the roads setting the density is an interesting mechanic and something I would give a go. If I don't like it there would always be the option to mod it.

The social I don't like but I can see why they added it. They however could have added a option to turn it off.

The always online and cloud based gaming is what kills it for me.

EA has released information.

=> Users receive this information.

=> Users think about this information.

=> Users will have an opinion about this information.

=> Users will want to exchange their opinion with others via communication channels such as this very forum. That's what a forum is for, by the way

Yell "HOLD YOUR OPINION" all you want, it's no use. (It's also funny how you voice an opinion yourself directly before screaming at others not to do so.)

Imagine you had booked a beachside holiday resort with sports facilities, and now you get told that the resort is actually far away from the sea and doesn't have any sports facilities, but a spa/sauna. Yes, once you start your holidays there. it might be ok - different, but ok. But you don't need to travel there first to know that it's not what you wanted and what you expressly indicated beforehand.

IMO, what's pointless talk is that constant "Oh, it's still 6 months".

What exactly do you think will they do in the remaining months? Does anybody here really, sincerely, reckon they will turn the game concept inside out? Make terraforming possible after all? Introduce a full-blown single player mode? Totally change the region concept and the game engine?

That would boil down to throwing out the entire game so far and starting from scratch. I guess the community has sensed rather well that we're beyond some points of no return already.

The concept stands, the game engine stands, the game mechanics are standing, next steps will probably be general programming to put the concept into practice, artwork, fixing glitches, UI programming and design, testing and balancing, documentation. Don't forget the server back-end, which will require a huge portion of the entire effort, because it's basically a client/server game with heavy bias on the server.

I seriously doubt that in 6 months we will be any more able to make a metropolis region out of seamlessly connected city tiles than based on what we know now. The same applies to terraforming, realistic-scale stations, railyards... heck, I don't even want to think about airports! Or sea ports, for that matter. Or even just the possibility to say "I want a highway connection to the neighbour city right here and right this way."

If the concept so far is to your liking, then these points of no return don't matter, and the following 6 months can be full of excitement and more interesting details. If it is not to your liking, then... well... I have scarce hope that anything to happen in the following 6 months will make that fundamental change it would take to get you on board.

Back to topic, I was more skeptical than excited from the get-go, and for the third time now I find myself not really caring at all. If this continues, I guess my reaction to the next so-called SimCity game (or SimCity-style game) will be reduced to shrugging, turning around and forgetting about it immediately.

Personally, I feel pretty relaxed. I mean, the cards had been lying on the table for 10 years now, and they were speaking a rather clear language - in this context it's almost amusing to see how one contestant after the other fails to acknowledge what's in plain sight and goofs it up. I must confess that this entertains me to some degree - the usual hullabaloo in the forums explicitly included. ;)

EDIT

Whoa, I'm slow. Guess you shouldn't interrupt posting for other things. I was picking up the thread from nukeu's post, of course.

Actually, if they are only 6 months from release, then the programming is done, artwork should be done, and they are in finally beta testing and debugging phase. Its almost certain nothing other than bug fixes will change at this late point in the development. There will be no new features, not enough time between now and release to properly code it and debug it.

I started out excited about this game when news was first released, but the more we actually find out about it, the more disappointed I am. They key features I want in the game aren't there, and the garbage I don't want in the game (origin) is. For the first time since the first SimCity way back when, I'm actually going to pass on a SimCity title.

I agree with all the negative posts about SC2013, every last word. If they want to make a proper SimCity game, then they should make a proper SimCity game.

I must agree to that. Maxis, under EA, had a decade to make a proper SimCity game. Unfortunately, EA screwed up in the name of greed. What a waste of a perfectly good decade.

Yes they did have a decade to further strengthen their reputation, grow their following and assure their place in history as not only a quality game creator, but also as being faithful to those who pay their bills, the purchaser of their games. EA however chose the short route that has no lasting fame, riches, or games. Shame on EA and any others (Maxis?) who allowed such a travestyto take place.

If people are tired of being ignored, tired of spending money on games that are playable for a few hours and then have nothing else to offer, then the right thing to do is to get the attention of those responsible by affecting their wallet. I hope people will put an end to this shallow quick buck attitude these companies have developed so that we may once again enjoy quality games that give us value for the money we pay.

I'm very disappointed in EA and Maxis.

Thank you.

I'm glad you are still positive and excited about the game, I really am, because I was excited too when I heard there was to be a new Sim City.

Then when I found out what Maxis was going for in this game, all my excitement vanished.

To me it's not a true Sim City if I have to be online or can't save my game on my own computer.

These are the main issues I have and bandwidth cost a lot of money here and it's limited.

"Fortunately a lot of us aren't blind to what Maxis is doing to this new so-called Sim City"

You're stating right there that those who don't adhere to your opinions of the new SimCity are blind. Come on. Of course the mods will delete/edit these posts but this is getting beyond annoying when no one can really discuss this game here anymore without being called whatever name you guys pull from the list you already have. It's not about shutting out the negative opinions, it's about shutting out the negative campaigners that push down those who want to discuss the game without constant "EA/Maxis/SimCity sucks and anyone who disagrees is _____________" insert from the list.

I'm still positive/excited about the game. I'm sorry if you think that means I'm blind/spoonfed/bullied or an EA plant. It's really sad that you guys have to keep coming up with ways to slander those who are still looking forward to the game, the list just keeps growing. You can't handle that people are excited so you call them blind to the truth of EVIL EA/Maxis and their quest to RUIN SimCity!

I am not "bothered" as you claim, in the least MINIggy03 that you or anyone else is "excited" about the game. My words were not addressed to you or those who are content with what EA or anyone else is offering up these days. My words were directed toward those like myself who are disappointed and frustrated at the quality of many games today.

If a handfull of talented modders can make SC4 what it is today with their work installed, then surely a company with the keys to the game core and millions of $ at their disposal could do better by those who have for the last ten years stated their desires for the game. It simply cannot be denied that EA chose to ignore those wishes.

My apologies if you were offended by my post but as I said, my words were not directed to those who are happy about the game, I wish I were. Perhaps you could just skip over such posts in the future.

If anything, those who absolutely adore the new "game" are the ones slandering those who aren't so excited. Yeah, it happens both ways, but those who are looking forward to the game generally tend to treat any doubtful/negative comments about the game as uninformed and unimportant. Then, they turn around and pretend to be the victims.

I've in fact seen very few "supportive" posts that are backed up by anything other than speculation. That's because there's really been nothing good confirmed for this game, therefore those who still adore it make up theories as to how the game will be "improved with DLCs", or how it's "still in development" (which is probably nearly finished at this point). I've even see people resort to "well we gotta support EA/Maxis if we want them to continue making SimCity games". That last one is utter rubbish if you ask me; it just goes against plain common sense.

My first reaction was that it looked like a version of SimCity that was made for our smartphones: very cartoonish. EA is either arrogant or just plain foolish. There is no way they have been listening to the fan base.

Like XL, it will be a disappointment, but worse.

We are very fortunate we have Simtropolis and the other fan sites and the talented people who have consistently expanded SC4.

i kinda like it! it looks a hell of a lot better than xl or societies. yeah it does look a bit cartoonish but it seems really easy to navigate. i saw a picture of tramways. i dont know if it will be like that but it looks pretty cool and i love the traffic in this game and how it flows. this was from the gameplay trailer. i have no idea how the final version will be but i am looking forward to it

yes sim city 4 still kicks ass. its funny that it came out in 2003-2004 and its still going strong!!!

I forgot to mention one more very important confirmed detail about SC5: no 100% offline single player mode

Goodbye unleashing disasters and reloading an earlier save. Goodbye being able to save your progress when there is no Internet connection. Gooddbye limitless resources. Goodbye actually playing by yourself. Goodbye creating the city of your dreams.

I'm curious about this new game, I'm waiting the demo version.

It seems to more limited and under EA control.

I think I won't be able to cheat and customize. I always love to play my own rules.

With The Sims 3, I loose the control of my citizens, it's so frustating, even if I can still cheat and rule the world, it will never be like The Sims 2. EA tried to add social features like Simport but it's totally useless because I don't want the stories of other players in my game.

I think Simcity will take the same way.

Because the other players won't follow my rules, I don't want to play with them.

In fact, I want to control everything in my city and in the other cities.

If that's so then I'm disappointed.

I'm not hearing good things about this game. It's sad, a game they made so many years ago can still blow away a game that comes out almost ten years later.

Hey guys! I've been reading this thread (I'm the Maxis Studio Community Manager, btw) and I just want y'all to know I appreciate all the feedback (both positive and negative).

I totally understand that a lot of you guys are a wee bit hesitant about the game we're making. I don't blame you -- it's been almost ten years since SimCity 4 (crazy, right?). But coming from someone who interacts with the team at Maxis on a daily basis and plays the game regularly, I can safely say the game we're making is worthy of the SimCity name (trust me -- this is NOT another Societies!). I understand it's a little hard to see that right now as we haven't released a ton of stuff to the public (that'll change next week at Gamescom, though!), but give the game a chance, and I think you'll really see what we're trying to accomplish.

Speaking of Gamescom, if anyone here is attending the show, make sure to stop by our booth and play the game (really looking forward to hearing the feedback from those attending). I'll be there, too, so if you see me, say hey!

This thread has gotten away from discussing the topic to discussing the "merits" of each others' statements. Not the purpose... so closed...

And let me say it again... Discussion of positive or negative aspects of the game is permitted. Discussion of the value of posters' comments is not.
