What we've done so far:

1. Established the map we're going to recreate. VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA.
2. Motina has made a map that is online on the Map EXchange. All large city tiles (4 x 4km)
3. Now let's plan this thing and develop some mods!

What we need to do:

1. Find a central mapping source and cut it out into squares for modellers to use.
2. Decide who will build where (I'll have an enlarged config file later).
3. Download the map and build that assigned area ACCURATELY AND EXACTLY.
4. One central upload person who will import all modelled maps onto their map.

We'll need to figure this one out: Should we build on the modelled maps or just submit streets and zones only?

Actions to be taken now:

1. Make a sign-up thread in the appropriate forum (one that will get attention though...).
2. Take a config sign-up thingy and post it in that thread (I got it, very fun!)
3. Get started on city building!
4. And the importer should have THE realistic mod and let the cities grow.

That's it! Any comments?

Fresno sounds like a good idea, another would be Reno, Nevada. Reno has a skyline of multiple tall casinos (chance for mod buildings?), does not take up much area (approx. 200,000 people), and only one real suburb (Sparks), with a few outlying small towns. Could be a beggining project.

First off, Sparks would not be considered a suburb, Sparks is considered it's own town. Telling a resident of Sparks they are a suburb is insulting32.gif. The real suburbs are the North Valleys, Spanish Springs, and Pleasant/Washoe Valley. The outlying towns are not that small. Carson, the state capital, has over 50,000 people with several of its own suburbs. But I still agree Reno would be a good town to model. With the exception of Carson city (30 miles) and Fernly (25 or so miles) everything is pretty close. Making up for Carson would be dificult though, i think i heard that 30000 people commute between Carson and Reno. Not to mention almost every transit option used in the city is available in rush hour. Granted the freeway terminuses would be a little difficult to put in the game.

sorry, i know that was really off topic, but i have friends in sparks who absolutely hate being called reno's suburb. Forgive my ranting.

A central source... any takers on that yet? I've got a gmail account, so I could probably host the central map, although my realistic building abilities are less than my ability to cross the universe in ten seconds flat....43.gif43.gif43.gif

so... I was thinking that Community On-Goings, City Journal, or General Discussions (or even Mod General Discussions) would be a great place to start sign-ups. I'll need either a vote or approval of a high command (ae: the7trumpets... if he ever gets back here). Yep.

Community Going-Ons seems to me as the most appropriate.

I wish I could participate, but I have another realism project going!

Here is the map. Again all lakes are not shown because they are at higher sea level.

Cool, I downloaded this map some time ago and have been using it as my region ever since, it has grown into a sprawling metropolis now, taking up about a third of the map now. and that map is huge!!! I cant wait for more updates of this realism project!!! 44.gifkeep up the good work!

The problem was months of discussion on which city to model, and as far as I can tell no effort to contact and coordinate those who volunteered to help.

I thought everyone was going to start off with a small city, rather you guys went with a big large city like Vancouver?  Did you mean small city by land size? or population?  I think it should of been a city like Calgary or something similar.
