Thanks, everyone. I'm glad a few people got to see the update before the pictures evidently all disappeared. Drats! 7.gif Now I know how I'll be spending part of my weekend.

In response to your advice MrCinatit and Dannato, I'll think I'll add at least three more mayors. A couple of those southern cities are mostly water, so maybe we'll just leave those for the combover eagles. 5.gif And James, I'm sure this region isn't nearly as challenging as making an interesting and complex flat city like you have! 6.gif

AH-HAH! so, it wasn't just me and my computer! good thing i didn't try my home-repair (i.e., hammer and screwdriver) kit to see what was wrong with my system.
i'm thinking ImageShack was down for a bit. looked at another journal earlier, where everyone was singing praises about it...unfortunately, all i saw were the annoying red x's with a box surrounding it. i guess this is a danger of off-site hosting..what if that site goes bye-bye...don't think that will happen with IS, as it has been around for a while, but one never knows. I would hate to have to sort through a couple hundred pictures, trying to figure out which one went where. i should really save my journals or something.
anyway, keep up the good work, mayormommy - and hopefully, you won't have to overhaul the journal this weekend after all.

The map can be found here: https://www.simtropolis.com/Maps/Maps.cfm?Str=Beautiful%20Country . I made a few changes to it in-game, mostly digging channels for the ferries to get through. Plus it had too many sinkholes even for me. The description and comments are as funny as ever though. 17.gif

I hope to have an update together in a few days - I had almost no free time in July but August should be much better! 18.gif

Wow, and I thought I liked to build on land as is. That region would scare the heck out of me, what you've done with it is incredible.

I like your use of monorail especially, and am paying close attention, so when (if) RH comes out for Macs, I will be up to speed on its effectiveness.

Thanx for stopping by Farallon, appreciate the comment.

I come from China, I like your city very much, but I find that your architectural style is to develop the house of some low density, why not develop high commerce ?

ps:My English is not good haha9.gif9.gif

Nyoe, this region's design was inspired by a thread on New Urbanism ( https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?mode=viewtopic&topicID=49637&num=30&pageNo=1 ). Unfortunately, it's a lot of reading, some of not too easy even if your English is good! 2.gif

Most of the zoning is medium density and while the whole thing appears to be sprawling all over the place, each neighborhood development is actually pretty compact and self-contained. The one thing I didn't do was add pedestrian-only corridors because I'm not convinced the game handles these realistically. The long-range plan is keep building these little neighborhoods for a few more updates and then when the population is high enough, start some small high density downtown commercial centers. But it will never be a skyscaper jungle! 28.gif

M16Ash, I guess forum game folks don't read this journal much. It will be fun to see how long it takes them to figure this out. 18.gif

That update is great - gotta love your choice of names for local areas (Dillville, Periwinkle etc.)

Great work with the cul-de-sacs and golf course also!

    Chapter 20: Going to Goumi

Clem tossed and turned before he finally gave up and got up very early the next morning.

    Mandevillamayorhouse2.jpg

He felt strangely excited about the day, which was odd because he surely would have dreaded spending the day with Ivy a few weeks ago. His friends Pete Moss and Eileen Wright tried to pry details out of him about his meeting the day before, but Clem just mumbled something about having to meet Ivy again today. He decided it was getting a bit annoying having perpetual house guests. When he first founded Mandevilla, it seemed like a waste to have one person living alone in the huge mayor

Wow! How come that I haven't checked this cj earlier? It's got some tremendous work!! I love that cheesy Rockefort map of yours! And it also has a story: I love that! There's just too many good cj's around at the moment; I think I'm going to reserve some time to read the whole story of it (but at the moment I'm also reading Nexis of Genesis and some other journals..) AARGH.. where do I find the time? I also have to update my own cj frequently and respond to all the replies... and next week college starts again....26.gif Anyway, being an active ST member is a hard job sometimes2.gif. I promise I'll keep on checking this journal, keep the updates coming! 35.gif35.gif35.gif35.gif

Wow, thanks for the comments Adley and andrew george! 9.gif Utora, I know what you mean about finding time to keep up with all the journals. This story keeps getting longer and more complicated but at least it's not 28 pages! (yet). 18.gif

I've always liked this journal (at least as far as I've read, that is, all). Perhaps mostly because it reminds me a lot of the city I live in (except the terrain. Not quite as hilly), as it's, like most cities around here, not as spread out as an american city - despite the fact that there is lots of room around here, in fact, I'd wager there are more apartments constructed than double-family housing.

Perhaps also because I don't like urban sprawl, because it promotes cars and cars create pollution, which promotes more cars (too much pollution in the air, etc).

Now, I've drifted off track though. I do like this region. The fact that it's (almost?) fully developed is another plus.

Well, after more than a month of not visiting Simtropolis, it's amazing how far the story has developed.

Will the budding romance between Clem and Ivy bloom? Will Col. Thistle find out who August really is? If so, what will happen? Why did Violet abstain and what did August say to her? Who is the one-armed man? 17.gif

I like the idea of having more characters/mayors populating the remaining cities. You should put in as many characters as you like. I also enjoyed Col. Thistle's scenic tour through the region.

As usual, I am amazed at how beautifully you have dealt with such a ragged region! Thanks for the story so far.1.gif

Thanks so much for the comments, freakpower and dyrcosis. 1.gif Freakpower, this city is mostly medium density, so it doesn't quite resemble typical low density American suburbs (although where I live, townhouses and garden apartments are pretty common, especially near public transit). This journal, despite the fact it has somehow become entangled in a romantic novel type story, is still basically an experiment in transit-oriented development. The commute times are getting alarmingly high, despite the very low car traffic, so I may resort to some sort of modding soon. 2.gif

LOL, dyrcosis, I do need an one-armed man. Although I hadn't seriously thought about bumping off any of my mayors, until now, that is...11.gif

    Update to come soon...

I have to join in with the cavalcade of praise, particularly of the development style. I'm very happy to see TOD / New Urbanism working out in SC4. Now I'm even more excited for my new computer to ship so I can finally play it out for myself.

The story's been great. I liked Col. Thistle's long drive and Clem and Ivy's monorail ride. It reminded me of the days I liked to spend seeing what a drive around my SC3k city would be like.

    Good times.
