Hi there,

I didn't have much time to play with BAT lately. But here's my newest creation, the first one of my PARIS building set. I have upload the model at the BEX.

Consider this as a beta version. Therefor this is still a landmark. Night lights are no good yet. Also I eventually plan to make buildings from this set according to 'wall-2-wall' principle.

Any advice, comments etc are welcome. Tell me what you think of proportions/textures etc.

I have also uploaded the BAT model, so if you are interested in joining me in creation of PARIS buildings, you can use this a an example. I apologize for the chaotic naming of objects.

I just also discovered a great link to photo's of almost all PARIS buildings; http://photos.pagesjaunes.fr/

The link you provided is great and while visiting Paris thanks to that link, I think I have discovered the real model of your building above :-)

Its address is Paris - 49 avenue Bosquet

Whoa!  Where did you get that from? ( the underpass? )

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

I have downloaded all of them. They look great! Well, I haven't seen them in the game, but I'm sure they are very nice!

Great pictures. I'm glad that so many enjoy my buildings.

nttChris; no... that's not the adress2.gif. But it's a look-alike I agree. When I create this one I dodn't have the link to the yellow pages yet. So I did it from another picture I found, but I only know its somewhere in Paris.. no idea of an adress.

I often use a real-world picture just to get an idea where I want to go with a building. I don't create 'exact' replicas (anymore). With wall-2-wall this will be very difficult, because I need to adapt the width.

Anyway with w-2-w the most logical building width is a multiple of 16m. To get some variation I plan to use also 10m and 22m width. Sidewalk distance can be handled simply in the lot editor.

!!!! With respect to sidewalk distance this is very important: Width of corner buildings need special attention(!), because if it's not exactly right, then the sidewalk distance will never be right.

these are looking very good but can i make a suggestion?
upload them all in one go at the end? you should group together all your buildings and merge them into a DAT file in one uplaod because it makes things much easier to download one file then trawling thru the STEX and downlaod several files.

I can do that guys, making a single dat file... but... then you'll have to wait maybe for weeks before I'll post something...

I had some inspiration last weekend so I produced a lot of buildings in just a few days, but now I'm back to work again... and I won't have that much time anymore. So I think I'll just post a building each time I finish one. I think(hope) eventually someone from simtropolis may release a prop or growable pack from my buildings again (just like witht he timber frame pack). If not than I'll see what I can do myself...

Hey, this is my first post on the forums, but I've been using the LEX to improve my cities for a while. This Paris stuff is the best yet! Even with only the 3 buildings available so far it looks really cool: (Sorry, you'll have to open the link as I haven't worked out my hosting properly yet)
    Paris

I've just got back from a weekend in Paris. Its really obvious when you're there that the conventional grid pattern isn't really kept to. Most of the roads are at sharp angles to each other and form triangles of buildings. You can see from this aerial shot from http://www.shockymap.com/Appli/Paris/:
    Aerial Shot

BTW, that's the Champs Elysee at the top. I was wondering whether this would be possible with this Paris set? Have a look at this screenshot:
    Niagara Mohawk Building

See the white building? Not the best screenshot of it in action but it's sargeantcm's Niagara Mohawk Building .
I really like it, but the best thing is that it comes on a 3x2 lot that extends beyond the lot base to make it fit along the 45 road. Xannepan perhaps you could hook up with sargeantcm and make some for the Paris set that have this 45 angle? I reckon it would work really well, and would be very much in keeping with the city.

The Niagara Mohawk fits to the right, but if they were made to fit a left straight road as well then they could be placed around central plazas etc.

Hope this helps, and I look forward to seeing more Paris buildings!

    Will

Ok, I don't think you'll be able to see the pics as my hosting service is blocking them. 26.gif26.gif IE sometimes shows them, but my Mozilla browser doesn't.

Can anyone recommend a fast and free hosting site? I tried to upload them on the Simtropolis server, but I guess that has stopped now.

    Will: Good point!

I've been wondering how to do the 45 degree buildings and still make it fit along a diagonal road.
Extending it beyond the lot base may be the ultimate solution! I'll work on this. Maybe it will be as simple as rerendering my buildings after rotating by 45 degrees.

Offcourse I'll need to make some corner buildings.

Anyone; please advice me how to do this in the BAT.

Xannepan ... yes ... just group everything into one group and then rotate at what ever angle you want BEFORE Rendering ... Note ... the FOOTPRINT will stay SQAURE in the LE ...

Another note ... if a FOOTPRINT just touches the LOT EDGE it will loose all it's properties ... for instance .... making a building touch the LOT EDGE you will loose the Nite Lights ... so do not bargain on hanging stuff over the LOT Border.

Vlakhaas: MMM... i don't really get it... did you look at the building/links in will_silver's reply.... How did he make the building 'touch' the diagonal road? Is this a transit enabled lot then??? If I merely rotate and put it exactly centered at the origin, then I wil never be able to have a 3m sidewalk distance from the DIAGONAL road?

Another thing is: I don't think it is possible to make diagonal building 'growable'. In the LE there's no option indicating a building should grow along a diagonal road. Or is there a way to do this?

the Niagara Mohawk building is bigger than the lot it stands on, which is why it fits perfectly along the road. Basically, it's just a large building model on a small lot overhanging a normal road. You can make it overhang more or less any other lot, or even water.

Xannepan ... yes you could move the PROP in the LE ... make me one at a 45% angle and I will give it a go ... as I said earlier ... when PROPS hang over the LOT EDGES the prop looses a lot of it;s properties and nile lites is one that can go away ... when a BUILDING hangs over the LOT Edge you creat stuff that can not be bulldozed ...

We did LOT Overhangs way back in June last year with the Freight stations and Lumber mills ... so OVERHANGING Props is not new but we have also seen some really weird things happen when props hang over ... ie ... if your fancy building jangs over the lot and the neighbour dillapidates ,,, your PROP will go black too if enough touches that dying neighbour ...

In anycase ... get some 45% buidlings to me and I will try them out for you along the angled roads in SC4 ... as far as I know TRANSPORT ENABLING runs in straight lines and not at angles on lots.

    Thanks guys,

This solve some of my question, but still may remain 34.gif... I'll have to think about this for a while1.gif.

    Vlakhaas;
    1) Does this imply that the problems you mention also apply to the Niagara Mohawk building?
    2) My models (gmax files) are posted on the BEX. Maybe you can download the gmax file, select everything, rotate and rerending it yourself. Let me know if this is an option.
If not, than I can send you the re-rendered rotated model by e-mail. BUt his may take a while, because my time is very scarce this week.

    Hi people.......
    Here's an announcement;

I have decided to join BSC. So many people have asked me for growable lots... so joining BSC seemed like a good idea.

Moreover, Vlakhaas kindly offered me to help me render my new cathedral.

Now that the cathedral is in his hands for now.. I have continued the paris w2w-buildings. My approach is to take real pictures from Paris buildings and use them as a source of inspiration. So I do not intend to make exact copies. With that in mind I have started to make several versions of one model, with completely different textures and small changes in the model though, so that it appears as a set of completely new buildings. Here are some screenshots. I'll have to check out the BSC 'rules' for uploading buildings, and hope these will be released soon..

xannepan...there are a few of you here that make excellent BATs, at least for my purposes. I've always loved and used your lots in my cities. I really like how you're making them look slightly weathered, yet still very elegant. I'm glad to see more of them will be coming out. 18.gif
