Wow, these are neat. I also like the houston and chicago style.
Just some tips,

When starting a suburb, make sure theres plenty of commerce around, this
can help it improve commutes, and make it look real life.

Make sure you put a highway nearby it. Highways often make the
commute travel and help speed up to there far away jobs

adding pegs trees and a green grass lot is a great way to put on style.

I'll show some of myne l8er

The Encounter Bay Metro Area's main sprawl belt is out west, sprawling around 25km from the main CBD.

The older suburbs closer to the CBD such as these are located on bland grids. Many of these are slowly being redeveloped into higher density.

One such area out west that has undergone this very process.

well, I think it is about time I posted some of my suburbs here.  I would like to say that these pics are all in the same city and are my very first real attempt at making suburbs.  this bedroom community is about 33k residence and is connected to a larger city of nearly 300k.  It was difficult for me at first as I tend to gravitate toward the grid style so any comments would be most appreciated.  oh and I would like to thank PEG for making his seasonal tree lots...

these first pics are of my R$$ communities:

middlesummer36uk.jpg

middlesummer24lz.jpg

middlesummer15lu.jpg

this next pic is a sample of my R$ communities (not much to see here just a bunch of low rent housing):
lowsummer12wy.jpg

here is a sample of my R$$$ communities.  they are all walled communites with thier own hospitals, schools, fire and police departments.  no expense spared for my wealthy residence:
highsummer27jm.jpg

highsummer19md.jpg

and here are some fall pics of some other R$$ communities:

middlefall14bp.jpg

middlefall27ub.jpg

hope you enjoy the pics.  let me know what you all think.  I just want to thank starrdarcy for starting this thread as it was my inspiration to make these communities in the first place.  44.gif

soldyne, I love your suburbs.  The grid style can sometimes work very well if you alter it once in a while and don't stick to 4*6, 4*6... over and over.  But consider some diagonal roads if you're looking for an East Coast appearance.

The first picture stands out to me; the large lot size end the sharp boundaries the trees make give it some realism I wish I had in my cities.  The third one with the cul-de-sacs is cool also.

While we're at it...  this pic = the intersection of US-80 and Robinson St. in the newly-built suburbs of Coventry.  The area's in a sort of greenbelt that extends all across the peninsula.

thanks for the kind words pickled_pig.  I have thought about diagonals before.  I even used em in an earlier city once but I found I had trouble building on them so I stopped using them.  also, I can never really get a diagonal to look good in my cities, it could just be that I am too hard on my own designs though.  I will try to add some in and see what happens.

chocolatemax285 I love the mosaic!  I believe that you are using the dirt roads mod from the STEX to get the brick roads?  I used to use that mod but for some reason the roads always looked mottled to me, I never got a continuous set of brick.  so i just got rid of the mod.  how do you get your streets so continuous?

these all look good, but i can think of one thing you need to make them more realistic: the STEX! it's there for a reason people! i mean, i personally HATE the Maxis homes, so i deleted(yes, DELETED) all of the in-game home files to be replaced with great suburban homes by SG. there's the Ashton, Highridge, and Modern Swiss homes that would make any city 5 times more realistic! that's just my 2 cents.

chocolate max: great suburbs, what is the 3x3 groups of small houses above the medical centre alongside the tram track. Look like little retirement cottages or something

and

dusktrooper: houses are looking wicked, one ques though are they going to be R$$ or R$$$ as i think they look too big for R$$.

I think DT's houses should be R$$ and some R$$$, mainly because land is extreamly cheap in the burbs, and those types of houses are more common because of it (more money to spend on the house).

And all these suburbs are great. Good job everyone, keep them coming 1.gif.

Standby.

Wow! A very nice collection of suburbs we have here.

And Dusktrooper, please release those houses, they are brilliant!
And the same for you Justanothersim! We need more suburban homes, badly!

And to add something of my own:
Here are some images of a suburb of my city Laurence. The CJ is closed and this pictures were not shown there.

barnatom I really like how you used various tree types in your small forested areas.  I always tend to fall back on PEGs seasonal trees (I'm addicted to them!).  I also like all the little dirt trails inbetween the houses.  very nice.

The city of Neo Arcadia is simply into two sections, the downtown and the suburbs, that's why the population is only around 10k. Well here's its suburbs.

i really dont enjoy constantly pruning my residential areas to have a certain look. its too much work. Maybe someone will figure out a way to have ploppable residential buildings that function, then it will be easy to make realistic subdivisions and also the game will be more challenging as well since you have to decide how much of what things to build and not have the simulator do it for you.

BTW, this one looks almost real

Now for some pictures from my alternate history version of Anacortes, Washington in my San Juan Islands CJ. I tried to give them the look of 1960s/70s suburban development.

First, a lower-class development.
lowdevelop5ko.jpg

And a nearby middle-class development

Consider this a preview of my upcoming updates.2.gif
