I don't think anything I've used that was made by Microsoft has failed on me. The only problems I've had are with hardware.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

The problem with computers software-wise is that as they get older, they get more and more modified from their out of the box status by having stuff installed on them, updates, etc., to the point where things start to get bogged down and performance suffers... and sometimes, something will get wonked to the point where it stops working properly. But let's see, what has been the death of my computers?

1980's Atari (d. 1999): doesn't boot up. Cause unknown.

1994 Gateway, Win3.1/DOS (d. 2003): was never the same after Y2K. Still sort of worked, but there was nowhere to put it and it wasn't exactly useful for much anymore, so it was dismantled and ditched.

1998 Dell, Win98 (d. 2001): software clunkiness, might have had a virus

2001 Vaio, WinXP (d. 2006): power surge fried the ethernet card. It was never the same after that.

2003 Vaio, WinXP (d. 2007): software clunkiness, never figured out exactly what

2005 HP Laptop, WinXP (d. 2009): power connection failed, battery wouldn't charge

2006 Toshiba Laptop, WinXP (d. 2010): power connection failed, battery wouldn't charge

2010 HP Laptop, Win7: current, still works.

So, that's three hardware failures, three software failures, and one unknown failure. Also, don't think I don't notice that the older computers lasted longer.... oy2.gif

"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I have a feeling adding a 1 to the start may have contributed to the confusion.

Ehhh... 2 years is too often. The rule is and has been that it takes 4 years for technological advancement to outmode a computer. Unfortunately, these days 4 years also seems to about be the expected lifespan of the machine itself. So, you can't count on keeping the old computer around as a second like you used to.

And that's really the crux of the matter right there: the manufacturers of electronics have realized that they gain nothing by building things to last, since in a few years there will be the next latest and greatest thing and most people will be looking to replace it anyway. So, design it to last long enough that most people will be looking to ditch it regardless, and no longer. It's cheaper that way. And hey, if a few people who weren't looking to replace their gizmo yet now have to because it breaks, that's not a bad thing either - it boosts your sales.

And if you want to keep using the same gizmo forever.... tough, you can't. Part of me is disgusted with Nikon for building their cameras to be cheap peices of crap and wants to buy another brand this time.... but another part of me realizes I'm kidding myself if I expect a Canon or an Olympus or a whatever to be any different. Especially since I'm buying basic point and shoot cameras, nothing fancy.

On a side note, is SC2000 compatible with 64bit computers? Don't want to bother dl'ing it if not.

Yes, Windows 95 came out in 1995. Towards the end of the year, if I recall correctly.

They are back to numbers, but it is a little different this time. It is, after all, Windows 7, not Windows 7.0. The list is pretty easy to understand...

Windows 1.0 = Windows 1

Windows 2.0 = Windows 2

Windows 3.0 = Windows 3

Windows 95/98/2000 = Windows 4

Windows XP = Windows 5

Windows Vista = Windows 6

....but it bothers me, for this reason: 95/98/2000 are different versions of the same system, so it is logical to group them together - but Vista and 7 are also different versions of the same system, and should thus be similarly grouped ("Windows 7" = Windows 6 v2). Although, I don't blame Microsoft for wanting to disassociate 7 from Vista as much as possible.
