In other news... how much snow is there on the ground in Connecticut?

Well, you see this thing here:

    That's a sundial. It's about 2½ feet high.

That is quite a significant amount of snow there.

You know, so far this year, every time I want to complain about all the snow... I think about ole' Duke and how he has it worse. There's only about a foot of snow on the ground here in western PA... if that.

    (2016)

We've had 34 inches of snow this month. Which is a new record for January. (previous record was 26 inches). Obviously some of that has compacted or melted, but less than you would expect since it's also been colder than normal. There is also a bit of accumulation leftover from the 20 inches we got on December 26th/27th. Which, combined with the wind, and the fact that it was a holiday weekend and preparation was poor, resulted in everything getting knocked out. Buses got stuck in the snow. Above-ground portions of the subway got buried, and dozens of people got stranded overnight on an A train in Queens. Metro-North didn't have service restored until about 7 PM the following day and ran on a weekend schedule the day after that.

Now, we're more seeing trouble from just running out of places to put all the snow. Guys that plow people's driveways are resorting to pushing snow into the street. And, as I discovered today, many of the sidewalks in Downtown Stamford haven't been shoveled (in Manhattan this isn't a problem).

There's no sign of this letting up, either. We've got a 60% chance of snow tomorrow. And there's another storm coming Tuesday or Wednesday. So, in a week, there will probably be just as much snow on the ground as there is now.

Apparently, the cause of this and all the snowstorms last year is that some sort of polar vortex related to the jet stream which normally traps moisture in the arctic and keeps warmth south has gotten weaker... and so we're seeing more cold and more snow and the arctic is seeing less of both. The polar icecap last September was 30%(!) smaller than normal, allowing ships to travel through the Arctic ocean from Europe to East Asia. And I hear that Iqualit had to cancel their New Year's snowmobile parade.

The last time Fresno got snow was about 11 years ago. It wasn't even much, and it probably melted quickly(I was too young to remember)

I have a mirror number. I am actually glad that there is snow in the lowlands here. If I wanted snow, I could go to the mountains.

Not exactly. Recent reports show that Bianca is expected to dissipate before it reaches Perth, or might just be a low. Either way, Bianca exploded to become the second strongest storm so far in 2011 just a few hours ago.

Tropical Cyclone Anthony is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 by the time it hits the north Queensland coast.

I gave my younger cousin my game cube with the game boy player advanced, and all my game cube and gameboy games a while ago. He now has a XBox 360 and other stuff so he would not miss the game cube.

Maybe, but you will have your house full of these things, broken monitors, and garbage. And nobody wants to have a house full of garbage.

Well, no, garbage you can throw away. Broken or obsolete electronics you can also get rid of so long as they are not particularly special. But what Ilikeseattle did was give away a perfectly good game console with a perfectly good set of games. That is something I would never dream of doing, because I really regret not still having this stuff if I get rid of it. For instance, I used to have SimCity 2000 on floppy disk. A few years ago I got into an argument here with someone who didn't believe such a thing existed. So I went to go find it and take a few pictures to show him... and I discovered that my mother had thrown all our old floppy disks away, thinking they were worthless clutter. Damn her!
