To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

"Rock and roll" covers a very broad variety of music, though. Chuck Berry sounds nothing like The Beatles, who sound nothing like Led Zeppelin, who sound nothing like Metallica, who sound nothing like Nirvana, who sound nothing like Smash Mouth, who sound nothing like Disturbed, and so on and so forth. It's really a catch-all term.

Not that other genres don't have variety, but the variability is far lower. You could just as easily say that Eminem sounds different from Ludacris, who sounds different from Usher, but they are not different enough to say "nothing like".

Incidentally, I think that may be the source of rap's problem: it's a less flexible form of music and without good room to expand it's simply gotten stale.

Of course, music in general these days has become overcommercialized to the point where if you're looking for something fresh, you're not going to find it in the mainstream. All you get there is repackaged crap. Look no further than the profuse number of covers and retoolings of old songs bouncing around for an indication of this. The reality is that Hollywood nowadays does not reward innovation and punishes actual talent. New ideas are dangerous, no one wants to take the risk. Better to rehash old ideas that made money before and thus presumably will make money again... and are old enough that the target audience is mostly unfamiliar with them. What's worse, all the dumb kids, if made aware that what they're listening to/watching is a remake, will say they like the new version better because "it's more modern", or something. Bleh. Fools, the lot of them.

You're right on rock and roll covering a very broad variety, however I don't think that changes statements (such as mine) about Chuck Berry being the founder. (I know you didn't say anyhing against it really, but stay with me for a sec). As much as later bands may not sound much like older ones (and vice-versa, I suppose) in many cases the later ones were influenced by the older ones. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) for instance once said that everything he's ever stolen he stole from Chuck Berry. Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, and nearly every 90s grundge band claims Cheap Trick has an influence of theirs, however I think I can say that Guns n Roses sounds nothing like Cheap Trick.

I guess I'll just second your comments about rap, I don't like it much, it all basically sounds similar to me, and it just isn't as appealing to me as rock is.

Mainstream music today is basically crap, totally support you there, I do. However as far as covering old songs, I don't think it's always just a commercial money making sceam. In the cases I can think of (albeit, they are all rock bands covering big, famous songs of other rock bands) it seems to me more of just their take on a classic and a tribute to the bands that came before them. But I do hate when kids hear a song (like the Stone's Sympathy for the Devil) in a video game and think it's a brand new song made for said game. Makes me sick.

Oh, and thanks for the welcome back Frdm. 3.gif

Gah! I missed both the Voyage 1969 and 1970 references! Curses!

But yeah, I agree with Duke and Chp here on this, I generally dislike rap (where is my melodic, its just poetry with... stuff!), if I listen to anything modern its usually not mainstream.

...I feel pathetic now, two large well thought out posts followed by my little blurb 3.gif

Rap isn't all bad, it's just that - as I said - it's gotten stale. Every good rap song that can be written has been written. Time to stick a fork in it.

as far as covering old songs, I don't think it's always just a commercial money making sceam. The key problem with it is that it's overdone. If it happened less often I wouldn't mind so much.

And yes, it isn't all bad either. I would draw three categories...

A cover might be well done (example: Smash Mouth's version of "I'm a Beliver") or horrible (example: whoever it was that covered Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" a few years back), depends on whether or not the new artist can do it justice.

A rap single sampling heavily from and utterly ripping off an older song is just horrible without exception (example: the folks who ripped off The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony"). These are the cases where you very often just have to say, "that was a great song, why'd you go and ruin it?"

And finally, a song which is obviously inspired by an older song but is different enough to be a new song in its own right.... this actually works. They Might Be Giants pulled it off in their own awesome way with "The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)" (hush my darling, be still my darling, the lion's on the phone...xdtm3.gif). And while I initially had disdain for Flo Rida's "Right Round", I gotta admit... it's a good piece of music.

Oh..right..sampling. Forgot about that. I don't consider that a cover so much as just ripping off another song..like you said.

Eh... only song of his which really stands out is "Party Up (Up In Here)". Rest is nondescript crap rap.

If you want to award the title of "best rapper" to someone, there is no contest: it's Eminem, hands down.
