So a train (not mine, the one heading in the opposite direction) got its first car stuck in the tunnel at the station due to total overhead power failure... Mine just had to sit at the platform for 15 minutes X(

Its annoying when that happens its even more annoying when the train in front of yours brakes down and your train is stuck in the middle of nowhere for half an hour while somebody elses train is being moved.

The most annoying habit is that for a "sick customer" they insist on holding the train in the station until the paramedics arrive to take them away. How's this for an idea: get the guy who had a stroke or whatever off the train and onto the platform, and then let the train and the others behind it continue on their way. Because really, why do they need the train there?

I guess that depends on the severity and seriousness of the situation, as one of the key things is "don't move an injured person unless they are in danger where they are"

Well that seems a tad callous.

I'm siding with the practices of the rail company here. Frdm920 is correct, moving a sick or injured person can be quite dangerous to them unless you have sufficient medical training and the correct equipment to ensure that no further issues arise. It may be a bit of an inconvenience, but that is outweighed by the medical emergency taking place. "My train was delayed due to a passenger requiring urgent medical assistance" should be accepted as a perfectly valid reason for being late to work.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Or you could just hop off the train and catch a bus if you're close enough to your work.

If your traveling between cities you can't hop onto a bus and when traveling through Britain you don't have the option to change trains.

I understand that there are situations where it's best not to move someone, but that isn't always the case. Once I was on sitting right in front of a guy who fainted on the train, apparently from low blood sugar. He was fine, by the time the paramedics arrived he was walking again, but they still waited. The issue isn't so much not wanting to move an injured person (as it's almost always sickness, not injury)... it's that if the train pulled away you'd be leaving the person by themself until help arrived. Still, a simple shifting of duties could solve this problem. Most stations are staffed at least part of the time. No reason why the train crew has to stay with the guy when the station agent can do it.

Paid for with what money? The MTA is struggling with a significant budget shortfall. And if it had spare cash, it should be spending it on expansion projects, not hiring people who serve no purpose 99.999% of the time.

You would be surprised how many people have a problem on trains also expansion projects cost millions and there is no guarantee that people will ride on them. Maybe instead of hiring first aiders the staff should be giving training on first aid and each station has its own medical room, that will save money and deal with the problem. Also which MTA

Usually in Japan a suicide will hold up a train line, but they never refer to it as that. I believe that rarely a train is held up for heat stroke or injury. I don't live in a place where taking the train is necessary anymore, so this is merely an academic matter at this point (for me, I mean).

That sounds like a pretty depressing reason to stop the train. I guess from that that people often commit suicide by train in japan.

My train was delayed after running over a thick branch on the tracks once. For a few moments many of us were thinking it could have been a person.

Once, during a pretty bad storm, my train was delayed for an hour at Roma Street Station (I think because of a signal failure or boom gate problem, I forget). When we eventually got going, the train must have been at something like double seat capacity. It was standing room only until at least Beenleigh, which is about 40 minutes down the line. There were no seats available when it first arrived at Roma Street and I got on, and even if there were, I was a student and thus forbidden from occupying them if an adult was standing.

40 minutes standing in a humid express train is no fun at all.

Since I only use proper Trains for going to places like London (or Durham its quicker than driving and 20 minutes on a train is fun) I don't have may experiences. But I do get the Tyne and Wear Metro a lot and because its light rail sometimes people come on and BREAK THE LAW which isn't very fun.

People need to remember that on any bus service to/from uni it's really important that if they're standing they moved all the way to back of the bus. This arvo had one guy who didn't (he stopped about half way) so bus driver thought we were full and didn't let anyone else on (including an old lady at the next stop) when in reality we could've fit another ten people on -_-

4949 oooh fancy numbers.

Maybe the Bus went past because it was at full capacity, remember the driver is responsible for everybody onboards well being and if you have 60 people on a bus (the average UK local bus capacity) if there is a crash not all 60 will survive and if the bus is over capacity even fewer will survive. I once was on a over capacity bus with 2 pushchairs onboard (things babies go in) which is overcapacity and a woman with another two wanted onboard and when the bus driver said no she jammed her foot in the door and demanded to get on, unfourtanatly after 5 minutes it worked.
