1. I am allergic to tobacco. I apparently I inherited it from my mother (which means I might eventually develop allergies to wheat, corn, and chocolate--which are all favorites of mine--in addition to raw onion and fresh pineapple).

2. My college understands the addiction of tobacco and the cravings and dangers from smoke near ventilation areas so my college has bus shelters in certain places on campus for smoking as well a couple other things to help smokers quit.

3. I am watching Beauty and the Beast because there is nothing better to watch.

I think smoking should just be illegal everywhere. Excuse me, but I really don't want lung cancer.

What I find really bothersome is that it seems that more kids than not start smoking when they get to college... I guess because their parents are no longer around to tell them not to, and because everyone else is doing it...

As they get older most of these people will eventually quit (most older smokers are working class), but I'm still at an age where I have to put up with it a lot. Someone goes outside to smoke a cigarette and they come back in reeking... blech!

Cigars are perceived to have more class. There are people who consider themselves cigar connoisseurs.

The smell is not identical (cigars have more "flavor"), but it's equally unpleasant.

And pipes have more class than cigars.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I live in Japan. Packs of cigarettes cost around $3 here, and almost all restaurants still have smoking areas. I work at a junior high school where no less than half the staff smokes. Junior high school teachers! Well, no, on second thought, that's not that crazy (you try dealing with a buncha teens hopped up on a super-potent cocktail of hormones). Highrises and shopping malls also have smoking rooms so you don't have to leave whatever sprawling, tall complex you happen to work in.

I do not smoke, and could never afford to start (packs of cigarettes were $5.50 in MI when I was in college).

A pack of cigarettes costs $10 to $12 in New York City. More than half that cost is taxes. ($1.01 federal tax + $4.35 state tax + $1.50 city tax = $6.86)

It's a bit cheaper if you go to Connecticut or New Jersey... quirk about New Jersey, though, is you need to be 19 to purchase tobacco products, not 18 like everywhere else in the US.

The high cigarette tax in New York isn't necessarily about extra revenue... it's done to discourage the use of the product. New York is arguably the most anti-tobacco state in the union. It's not just the tax, there are all sorts of crazy restrictions on where you can smoke. Smoking is by law banned in all indoor public places (including hotels, dormitories, bars, and restaurants) and train platforms. In New York City it's illegal to smoke in parks, beaches, and public plazas (light up in Times Square and you will get a $50 fine).

Ohio passed similar statewide smoking restrictions. I remember in Toledo (my hometown) there were a ton of businesses that were concerned about losing customers to bars across the state line in Michigan. It didn't happen though. Fewer people than you think smoke. In Japan, the number is probably over 50%. In the US? I've heard 20%, and I've heard lower than that, too. I imagine there are states where that number is much higher than 20, though.

The percentage of people who smoke varies greatly by region. Naturally, it's higher in places where cigarettes are cheaper and laws are looser.

As for not being friends with anyone who smokes... that would be too unduly restrictive for me. My best friend smokes (in front of her 2-year old daughter... yes, I've lectured her about that). But I've known her since high school and she was already my best friend before she started. She tried to get me to start ("hey, don't knock it 'till you try it"), but I of course was having none of that.

My best friend in college was a smoker. He quit right before I left for Japan so while we were out at the smoky bars and he was dying for a cigarette it could be quite tense. Like I said, I could never afford to start. Didn't stop me from bumming the occasional smoke every now and then when it became unclear how many beers I had drunk that night.

I am really enjoying my Christmas vacation. I am on a trip in Guadalajara visiting family. Washington state also has high taxes but the West Coast has similar views to smoking Marijuana as Tobacco.

I hate smoking. The smell is terrible, especially from cigars. :dead:

Also, my uncle has smoked ever since his teens (he's now somewhere in his 40's) and I think that was a major factor in how his life turned out. Needless to say, it didn't turn out that well. I won't go into further detail...

Tobacco isn't life-ruining since, while extremely unhealthy, it is still socially acceptable in professional circles. Though the same cannot be said of cannabis or anything harder... most large employers have mandatory drug tests before hiring. You need to work for a small company to get away with having a career and using drugs at the same time.

Which is not impossible... I know someone who uses cannabis and has a stable job which she performs just fine at. But she only smokes at home and never goes to work high. Her boss doesn't know.
