Its not dead, infact many people NOT registered on this site still play it. Some schools now have SC4 installed in certain computers.

It's still on sale in many places AFAIK in bundles. Personally, I stopped playing after losing my Plugins collection and I am too lazy to download/install especially those exe installers...ugh.

SimCity is Like StarCraft. Until this year, all we had was the Original StarCraft (March 1998) and the expansion Brood War (November 1998). All we had was that for 12 years! And it lived strong. Hell, I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there are televised tournaments for it in South Korea. They have guys that are pro, like a pro baseball player or football player status. It's intense stuff. This is still going on for the original, even after the release of SC2. The top SC1 guy just switched to SC2, 3 months after the release. I know I still play some of the original for nostalgia purposes. So just because a game is old does not mean it is automatically dying, it's just old.

No way SC4 is dead -- or dying. For my part, I still play virtually every day. I've been playing CXL2011 (and find it decent) but for every minute of CXL2011 I'm still playing five minutes of SC4. I still think it's a superior game. I don't think one can say that it's dying simply b/c of its age. It is arguably the most modded game in PC history and that alone keeps it fresh. It runs great on the latest version of Windows and still receives strong community support. I have a stupid fast computer rig (12G of DDR3 RAM, dual GPU video card, solid state drives, etc.) and SC4 still lags on big cities and a 4+G plugin folder. That's not a criticism but more a comment on how modding has kept the game current and still fun. I still love it. I'll be playing it for years to come.

I played SC4 around 2005 or so, but eventually gave up. Then recently bought it on Steam on a whim, because it was only $20. After I ran into some of the same problems I always did before, I looked online and found this community.

Now I play with the NAM and RHW, and a lot of custom content, and it's like an entirely new game to me, that allows for possibilities it otherwise never had before.

Dead? To me it's like brand new! 9.gif

SC$ is not dead, just look at the NAM team. They have released so many stuff but yet they still work on more... in my opinion they can and will do more. SC4's potential has not fully been unlocked.

Everyday, there is still a lot of custom content being released, and just now we are finding out more info about SimCity1.dat. To say the game is dying is preposterous.....with SC4, this site would barely be anything.....

Interesting, could you post a link to this info about the SimCity1.dat?

I mean, I really don't know what will happen to SC4 next. It's 8 YEARS OLD now, but even if I really have to hate SC4, I doubt SC4 will EVER go down. I mean, there is new custom content being released every single day.

lol...

just cause its been out for 8 years doesn't mean its dead... sc4 is still just a child

i enjoy deluxe edition with no mods or plugs. and have been playing since it was released.

in fact i just bought another copy ... i currently have 1 copy of sc4 vanilla, 1, rush hour, and 9 deluxe edition... and the steam version (not counting the copies ive given away to friends) whenever is see it on the shelves (more than 3 copies) and i have the cash in my pocket i buy it...

i have even added a cdrom drive to my computer that is dedicated to playing sc4... call me crazy, but just explaining the premise of the game to people gets them excited about it and makes me want to play it right then and there

and just because of that i bought a netbook that is powerful enough to play and now i can play anytime and anywhere.... and with the 10hr battery on the netbook i usually run out of juice before it does... but when i wake up i can continue playing long before i need a charge..

the citylife/xl series has made a mockery of the premise of city building.... city building is not to see how many people you can fit on a fixed size map (sure sc4 only has 3 size maps... but you can put as many of them together as you want. one region that i am working on currently has 2,920 of these mixed size cities, and as soon as i get a computer that is powerful enough i will be able to view them all at once with the region census... untill then im stuck scrolling around the region in the game... something the city life/xl series could never even dream of

it may be 40 years before we see a comparable city building game is released, but im sure that even then simcity4 will not be dead...

and if the source code is ever released and we are able to run the game with other graphical engines that the game could be as strong 100 years from now as it is today....

simcity 4 is still in its infancy

NO

This project seems particularly promising: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=41&threadid=117460&enterthread=y&STARTPAGE=1

Pretty big potential in there IMO. 8 years on and it's still got secrets! It just gets better with age!

And honestly, who hasn't stumbled across an old city they built and thought, what was I thinking? But that's always the case, cities you build now would always seem to be a bit barbaric later on. New mods has a hand in it of course! Hello NWM & co!

Not at all... Thanks to this site, you can update the game with new buildings, patches, etc...

Just look at some CJ's and compare them to the original game! It has evolved over the years...

If SC4 was dead, would we even be talking about it 8 years after is was first released? How many games does anyone know of that continue to get more playing time? SCS is and was a bad joke, pretty sad you can find the game in the Dollar bin at Dollar General or Family Dollar stores, but SC4 is still the same price is was when it first came out $20! Thats what you call staying power.
