Diagonal growables? Someone please explain. Is this now possible to mod??

Just found your thread and love your work, great idea to easily and safely add variation to the game and surely what lots of folk want.

You should release an EHA Pack at some stage will all files combined.

Keep it up :thumb:

libellibicus: there is still a lot of work and testing to be done, as well a lot of.. err.. loting and searching for diagonal models ^^

SimCoug: thank you. diagonals were always on my mind, just never had much time for them :)

andisart: I explain. This "Growable Diagonal thing" is part of a bigger work I have being done, of lotting. long time ago, I had the idea to relot everything, as maxis lots (and many others) are American and not Euro/Portuguese. When I started to do, I thought "why not take this opportunity to do something else, like what I've done with industrial lots (I had the same idea as T Wrecks, high density clean industry, low density pollutant). What can I put apart? well, there are W2W buildings, Standing alone Buildings, all with orthogonal versions as well diagonal (and some FAR). Corner buildings also exists and so on. that's a great deal of combos. So I started to sort them out on a table, where I take in consideration size of the lot and the road.

This way, I found a way to control what and where to grow stuff. First, I started to create w2w districts, stand alone house districts (both orthogonal) and now I moved into diagonals :)

Maybe I'll create a video where you can see better what I mean :)

Thanks for giving me the background but I'm not sure I understand what you mean in terms of the growing aspect. I wonder how the lot will be placed by the game if it grows diagonally since the game is based on a square grid, you know? Or does it just LOOK like it is growing diagonally, but is actually placed on a square/rectangle lot?

It is a 2x2 lot that is set to grow in corner. Since diagonal roads in SC4 count as corners the entire length, corner lots will grow on them. These will also grow along orthogonal corners, where they will not look as great, but won't look bad either.

    that's correct.

not exactly. they will only grow if that way is you want them to. both corners and diagonals are set differently so you can pick which one you want. to be more exact, (ortho) corners grow on "to the right" corners ( _| ) while diagonals (and maybe in the future FAR) grow on "to the left" ( |_ ) corners ;)

this is not 100% flawless. sometimes the 2x2 will upgrade into 2x 1x2 lots, but as I add new lots, with all stages being filled up, it will happen way less. right now only 10 to 15% of the times happens that. I hope to reduce it further more.

The thing is that diagonals can be hard to control. In addition to the problem with lots splitting up (and the part w/o road contact getting abandoned), the "diagonal" criterion is not as solidly definied as you'd like. If you have a 3x3 lot parallel to an othogonal road, and a side road touches the last tile on the left side (the one furthest away from the road), the game will treat the lot as a corner lot. And of course, buildings intended for straight lots can also grow on corners. :(

the problem with the 1x2 and 1x3 (not only they are set to other stuff) is that they don't look as good IMO, as they grow not perpendicular to the road, they grow sideways. the 2x2 (and 1x1) are symmetric and have the impression that grow perpendicular to the road, which is more real

The thing is that diagonals can be hard to control. In addition to the problem with lots splitting up (and the part w/o road contact getting abandoned), the "diagonal" criterion is not as solidly definied as you'd like. And of course, buildings intended for straight lots can also grow on corners. :(

but there comes the tricky part, where you control it by precision loting. hence the reloting of everything. if in my files, the only 2x2 left corner buildings are diagonal, thats what I'll get most of the times (not to say everytime) when I zone that way.

more, this is, as I said before, the tip of the iceberg of a larger goal. control what and where stuff grows.

Well, no matter what kind of lot work you do, it won't change the game's idea of what is regarded as diagonal, and it doesn't change the general game mechanic that straight lots can grow on corners. I wish it was possible to change that - the things we could do... :(

Agreed - but that's what the bulldozer tool is for

I'm sure my play style is abnormal compared to the average SC4'er, but I really like how growable diagonals look along diagonal roads. With a little TLC and the 'historical' button, the SC4 grid becomes even less apparent.

The most important thing is for BATers to create some diagonal versions of their models. Small commercial lots would work as diagonals as well, but I have had very little luck finding more than a few models.

Now that SimCity 2013 is about to be released they may stop selling SimCity 4 all together. If that happens someone might request the source code for the game. Then we could really have some fun changing things.

Ya, from time to time we have to use the dezone tool, not the bulldozer (in my case), but still, way better than having diagonals only plopped :D

SimCoug: are those lots made by you? I'll show you a table with my settings so you can also lot according to them and test them :P

    PBGV: ya, who knows :)

They look very sweet, I love them! Almost makes me wanna jump in and create a few myself..

PGV103, as much as I would love if that happened I seriously doubt it will :-/ You can even still buy SC3000 sometimes in the budget section (usually for a 5er or so).

I agree those diagonal lots look nice, and in fact I have been downloading your releases, SimCoug. :) They are perfect for the "rural America" look I like to go for in the... well, rural parts of my region.

Concerning the bulldozer - yeah, definitely most used tool in SimCity.
