New Melbourne

Visit the capital of Victoria on the banks of the Neoyarra!

cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_21.jpg

Statistics

Population:  502,130

Climate:  Mediterranean

Founded:  2018

Primary Industry:  High-Tech

Description

Founded in 2018 by Governor J. Batman, New Melbourne was one of the first cities founded in the Victoria District on Eden.  Although initially intended to be a farming community, the rapid influx of citizens to Victoria led to rapid enlargement of the city.  Several farms still remain, but their land is gradually being replaced by housing, industry and offices.

cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_25.jpg

The rapid increase in population has switched the predominately farming village into a industrial powerhouse.  Factories produce chemicals and manufactured products.  High tech industries have also begun shifting into New Melbourne, which is now a large exporter of electronic goods throughout Victoria and across Eden itself.

cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_23.jpg

The low-rise focus adopted by Governor Hotham (2022-2026) has led to minimal development above 3 -4 stories, with several exceptions.  The Agricultural Guild has their 20-story headquarters located in New Melbourne.  Governor Latrobe (2026-present) recently rescinded these laws and the new 30 story Rialto Building was recently opened with great success.

cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_24.jpg

As New Melbourne travels towards 2040, Governor Latrobe continues to push for an increase in the population.  This may lead to the loss of the remaining arable land near New Melbourne, but neighbouring farming villages are already in place to meet the needs of this growing metropolis.

---

Next goal - 750,000 people!  That should unlock high-density hi-tech buildings 4.gif

I'm finally giving in and demolishing farms for housing purposes - the executives and elites hate living on the outskirts!  The farming production continues to drop, but I worry about demolishing the Farming Guild HQ, which increases the farming production by 35%.  Also, it looks cool 4.gif

High tech seems very demanding on manufacturing, waste and electricity services.  Which in turn increases the need for heavy industry and offices.  The farms on the far side of the river from the CBD are nearly all bankrupt due to the pollution from these industries, but fortunately the housing side is doing ok.

The other major problem is traffic, particularly over the Neoyarra bridges which are nearly all red.  I could keep adding more bridges but then it looks ugly :S  Will have to see what other opportunities present themselves...

Very realistic!!!!! Traffic-wise, why don't you post your traffic congestion map and then we can have a better understanding of where the actual bottlenecks take place....

     New Melbourne

    Traffic Report (500,000 population)

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_27.jpg

The Neoyarra is spanned by seven bridges, all visible in aerial view above.  Traffic density is indicated by colour, from green (freely flowing) to red (congested).

The worst traffic is on the Richmond Expressway as it bridges the river.  Some of the smaller bridges to the left of the view above are also heavily congested.

I now have highways available to me, but not much space to place them (as usual...), and I'm worried about further expansion as the Richmond Expressway (which travels vertically on this view on the right) is already full of traffic!

I suppose I could always start up some bus lines...

Nice map. You could also change the expressway to one way avenue bridges, so you have a 4x4 lane or 5x5 lane bridge, instead of 3x3 2.gif

I've managed to place a huge ring road which is helping with traffic somewhat, as well as improving freight / passenger distribution to the CBD 4.gif Will post when I get to 750,000.

    New Melbourne Hits 750,000 people!

The electronics and computing industry of New Melbourne continues to power ahead, with thousands of citizens flocking to the city to take up lucrative jobs on Eden.  The construction of the EdenTel Tower has enabled rapid introduction of wireless networking throughout Victoria.  It also has excellent views and an average restaurant.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_30.jpg

A major freeway has been created to lessen the traffic burden on the CBD, which was previously being traversed by numerous commuters attempting to reach the distant industrial area.  Although many homes were destroyed, the new Southern Ring Road has improved the lifestyle of all New Melburnians.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_31.jpg

New Melbourne continues to expand upwards, with ten buildings now over twenty stories high.  The remaining farmland has been protected in order to maintain some food supply to the city without the need for imports.  Most revenue now comes from exporting high tech goods across Eden.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_33.jpg

Perhaps the only major problem facing the city now is the high levels of smog which are choking the air.  Although the city council has put in numerous leisure activities for the citizens there are still regular protests at the lack of breathable air.

Nevertheless, the increasing population of New Melbourne has also led to establishment of several research projects and other institutes which are attempting to look into more efficient ways of producing goods.  If this can be achieved, pollution levels in New Melbourne may be less of a problem in the future.

RAM and CPU upgrades help a lot if you already have a decent graphics card.

     New Melbourne

    Population - 1,000,000

    Finally a new update!

First up, the night view from the industrial region looking towards the CBD

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_39.jpg

It's funny how the night view always looks more awesome in game!  Pretty much everything on the near side of the river is industrial (heavy / manufacturing), with the low density stuff closest to the river to reduce the pollution in the CBD.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_37.jpg

Next, a view along the Southbank Expressway.  Built to help relieve traffic chaos along the river, the expressway itself became clogged with traffic, necessitating the completion of the New Melbourne Ring Road.  You can see all the cars moving along the expressway, unfortunately only as small grey boxes.  I'm trying to keep density to medium within the central part of the city which seems to be going pretty well so far.  Also, the best school in the world is the large building just below the bridge on the other side of the river.  Imagine going to school there!

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_38.jpg

This is a dusk shot as the sun sinks to the west.  So I guess this is looking north!  The EdenTel tower in the background really gives something to this city 4.gif

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_40.jpg

Finally, a traffic map.  The ring road is complete.  On this view, 'south' is towards the top of the map, I'll have to actually draw a proper map at some point!  The biggest problems facing the city are pollution, traffic and passenger services, particularly to the CBD.  I think the poor traffic situation is really ruining the profitability of the offices in the CBD, as most of their "passenger service" satisfaction is below 50% despite the airport across the river.  This will only get worse as the city expands!

Speaking of expansion, space is beginning to get rather limited, although there is still some flat land in the north west, east and southern parts of the map (particularly near the industrial areas).

Another problem I'm having is that my highway bridges are not connecting to my ground highways.  Anyone know what might be causing this?  I'm having to convert my highways to expressways, build an expressway bridge, and then convert back to a highway which is causing some traffic difficulties!

download the highway bridge mod here on simtropolis, it's awesome and will make you be able to build a highway bridge without making it into an expressway! Great update! Nice Ring Road by the way!

    New Melbourne Ring Road

As requested, here's some pics of the ring road.

On the southern side of the city, there is a major interchange between the Richmond Expressway and the southern part of the ring road.  Houses in this region are, as expected, very cheap.  The industrial sector is just to the north.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_42.jpg

The same interchange, looking north.  You can see the Richmond Expressway passing in almost a straight line to its crossing of the Neoyarra.  The CBD is just to the right of this.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_43.jpg

Moving to the western part of the ring road, this is the Dandenong Interchange near a large residential suburb.  Numerous earthmoving works were required to create this interchange.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_44.jpg

The EdenTel Interchange is located just below the EdenTel tower.  The EdenTel tower runs west beneath the tower to gather traffic from the most northern of New Melbourne's suburbs.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_45.jpg

Finally, on the eastern side of the city is the Lalor Interchange.  This is controlled by traffic lights and is a huge bottleneck.  New Melbourne engineers seem unable to construct freeway style bridges in this day and age!

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_41.jpg

Well that's the ring road!  Now I'll be focussing on taking New Melbourne to 1,250,000 people!

    Population - 1,250,000

New Melbourne continuous to grow, and although pollution is a major concern the provision of amenities (paid for through the export of high-tech goods) is keeping the populace content.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_47.jpg

With increasing size, the central city is becoming progressively more gentrified as house prices soar.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_48.jpg

Unfortunately, this means that the lower income workers have a very, very long way to travel to reach the city centre.  The high tech industries are found on the opposite side of the CBD, although the ring road helps with traffic congestion.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_49.jpg

The high tech sector continues to expand, with numerous suburbs consisting entirely of high tech and supporting office infrastructure springing up on the western side of the city.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_50.jpg

Unfortunately, even the ring road is having trouble coping with all of the traffic, leading to bottlenecks lasting late into the night.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_51.jpg

Fortunately this keeps traffic off the main arterial roads!

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_52.jpg

The construction of the Coburg Parkway (on the left side of this traffic view) is alleviating some of the traffic problems by funneling some traffic from the suburb of Coburg to the high tech district of Altona.

    cxl_screenshot_new%20melbourne_53.jpg

That's it for now, going to try for 1,500,000 next!  If my computer can tolerate it 2.gif
