I think I missed most the "diagonal" part of the game. No bridges or tunnels that are diagonal... Not even buildings and parks. Sure, for the latter, some lot mods help a lot (ha! Nice word game!), but really lacks some sort of realism. It's hard to make cities that aren't square in nature (like a Roman War Camp for example). But it's not like I hate the fact that there is not. But there's that..

Agreed. The NAM does add diagonal streets, and you could always hold shift while dragging a road to make it diagonal, but with no anti-aliasing, these look pretty ugly. If you like streets like that, there are some overhung buildings ("diagonal") on the STEX. It is tricky, but you can do it.

I find it strange they didn't have a consept of rivers above sea level in Sim4. They had a watter tool in simCity2 and they left it out of Sim3 untill they got the later version for it. Having Hydro dams in simcity2 was kinda fun.

I guess I just miss little rivers and streems carving up your wide open spaces and then having to have lots of mini briges everywhere. It adds a sorta realer feal to land scapes.

BUT im kinda bias living in Oregon I meen we got the streems/creeks and watterfalls everywhere.

There is this annoying thing that's a bit hard to explain...when you terraform your cities to appear seamless in region view; the 'conform edges button' (can't think of the real word off the top of my head) is always useful. BUT when I try to terraform things near the edge, albeit leaving the edges themselves perfectly as they were to bound to a neighboring city, when I hit the conform edges button again to clean things up a bit, it's like there's this 'radius' where it ruins everything near the border, even if it was pretty much fine! Annnoying and a bit weird...

I have a horid time getting my high elavation bordors to look right also. Now that Im making a region for my CJ Im trying to make it look nice but the map edgeing thing makes it go allmoast veritical when dooing it in a new space next door.

True, but not just diagonal. if the elevation between 1 building and other building not flat enough it looks disgusting ugly

with it's ground rising roughly

The advisers: they order me to make roads where traffic is high, I uderstand that, and I make them there, but then they are mad 'cause there aren't enough streets only roads. They speak agaisnt each other, what am I supposed to do?

Each of those guys has a private agenda of replacing you. Put them in their place. Press

CTRL+XdollyllamaRETURN

And you'll see what they really are.

I agree about the advisers, they can be quite annoying and the advice they give can be downright idiotic. What frustrates me most are the issues with commute time (although the NAM's traffic fixes help a lot) and the lack of consideration the game gives to players with intents on creating suburbs. Also the fact that you can't build plazas, grass areas, etc under elevated networks and how ugly the default terrain looks.(I know there are mods can fix those issues, I just haven't found any yet. :uhm: )

I do actually have underbridge scenery in my plugins that I downloaded from a japanese site but I can't for the life of me locate it right now...if I do I'll be sure to link you to it, though!

I do agree on the suburbs...the diagonal functionality is there but looks pretty off with very few diagonal or fractional-angle lots and no anti-aliasing. I think the game gives little consideration to a lot of things, to be honest....

While they did do a good job with creating the idea of 'interdependent cities' what it lacks and where I find the game incomplete is the ability to develop a large metropolitan area...you can of course have your Sims commuting between cities but I'm really talking about unlocking a Marina in one tile when you want to use it another. It'd be nice if you could unlock a reward and it was unlocked for your entire region, or within a certain radius of the city you unlocked it.

I know how that feels. If you do remember where you found that, feel free to drop me a line, it would be much appreciated. ;)

I do agree that it would be nice if rewards worked like that, I guess the game was created mostly with the thought that the player would want to create 'separate but dependent' cities with, well, separate city services and rewards. Another thing that annoys me about the game is the difficulty of turning a reasonable profit without city services taking a hit. Only after I downloaded the Money Tree from the SC4 official site was I able to provide adequate hospitals, schools, etc without running my city's treasury into the ground. Then again, I'm not that great at any of the SimCity games (exept Societies) but still...

If you are willing to use a money cheat, get the extra cheats dll file then use the moolah command. This doesn't require any lot, and you can use it any time. I use it to give grants-in-aid to cities starting up, then take it back once they have more than the grant again in the treasury.

I just might do that...

One last dislike about the game, is how long it takes to unlock power plants that produce both a decent amount of energy and minimal pollution and the lack of lesser-polluting ways of efficient garbage disposal. Once again, you can find these things on Simtropolis and other such sites, but IMO you shouldn't have to go out looking for this stuff.

Ohh this is fun for my first post! Alright, I agree with the game crashing all the time. I have a fast computer but it crashes so much that I have to save it every few minutes to make sure! I Other things that I hate are that you can't have a bridge connecting to a neighboring city. I found out about that a little too late. I had build a huge highway and I was going to bridge it over to the next city, but it wouldn't. So now I have a highway just...ending at the water line.

Another thing I hate? There is no undo or move! I couldn't tell you how many times I was placing something (usually expensive of course) and I click-to-place prematurely and I can't just move it to where I meant to put it.

If you are saving frequently, all you need for an undo is to do an exit to region without save and reopen your city. The rest is just discipline.

As for your highway to nowhere, terraform an island on the border (both sides) and connect your highway that way.

That implies that each Sim is a job hopper, and seldom returns to the same job.

Although this was true for the original SC4, the traffic simulator was changed with Rush Hour so that the Sims stay at the same job unless other factors intervene (their residence or place of work upgrades or downgrades, etc.). However, the traffic simulator runs only once every several months or less, and it appears that it recalculates the routes each time. So the destination finder runs only for Sims who need new jobs, but the pathfinder appears to run for everyone.

Not that unrealistic, though. I mean, if you started noticing that your daily commute was taking you longer and longer every week, wouldn't you look at taking a different route to work?

i also really hate it that when i save, it freezes and i lose all my work, it gets REALLY annoying, it happens so many times...

Now that's something I've been noticing lately. Sometimes the save takes and sometimes not, but I save so often that I am not much affected. I save every time I put something in that I may not remember what I did if there is a crash (that is, something fairly extensive). I consider creating a new zone to be fairly extensive.

I am running on beta software underpinnings, so I am willing to put up with a few crashes.

Mine do. For a full analysis of your network you need the extra cheats dll. Put your game in pause and type in CTRL-XdrawpathsRETURN. The program will show the pathing of your game in glorious color. You should be able to see from this how the Sims must get to work. When you are done, the off command is hidepaths.

You can also try the route query operator (ALT+/) to have a look at where individual Sims are going.

Parking garages are only useful at places that do not have parking. Regular rail stations have lots of parking, but sometimes need a bus system for the Sims to use them. Other transport systems have no parking at all and need the buildings as well.

Sims love to drive, so if the rapid transit route takes them at all out of their way, they will drive. R$$$ will drive most of the time.

Thanks for the tips. Recentely I have made a new city and the trains are working pretty good. they still wont use the garage though. another thing that annoys me is that you have to plan all your avenue/highway/rails etc. or the will demolish your city.

What really enrages me is that the game constantly crashes and I lose good progress on my cities, but no matter how mad I get I always come back. This game really is one of a kind.

Two of the most common crashes I've seen are the zoom crash bug [use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom; it crashes] and the puzzle piece over TE'd lot issue...

Have you a lot of custom content and/or the NAM?

My friend, you need to learn by horrible experience what the crash avoidance strategies are. Here is a partial list that may help you.

  • Save frequently (CTRL+s)
  • When placing puzzle pieces, work at the highest magnification
  • If you can, set your environment to Windows 2003
  • Make sure your GPU controls are set to application selected
  • Turn off clouds, waves, color cursor
  • Failing all else, run software rendering

I got NAM and but they still dont use the parking garages. and its even by a elevated train headed to the work district. They will swarm in thousands to ground level trains but they only take they elevated trains a little. example 100 on EL train 3000 people on normal train

what frustrates me is that when my city is getting educated and there is more need for everything with $$ and $$$ and they start building that stuff all the $ buildings stay mixed up between. Working with taxes havent given me positive results. Its so stupid to see a resedential getto flat next to a $$$ building with a swimming pool on the roof. So it frustrates me that i cant get a nice balanced 'looking' city.
