Autodesk 3dsMax for Free Legally

You heard it right! If youre a student you can now get a free legal copy of 3dsMax 2011. It only lasts for 13 months, but by that time they will have 2012 for free. All you need to get it is a e-mail ending in @.edu If you are out of the U.S.A. then you can use whatever e-mail your school issues. (It doesnt have to be .edu) After that you can go to the Autodesk Students Site to get your free 13 month copy.

Why get Max you ask, well it is the full featured version of gmax, and it allows for many more tools and nicer looking renders.

If you want to render with max you will need to get BAT4Max

UPDATE: You can now get a 3 year liscense for free. See here for details All you have to do is update your old liscense if you arledy have one or get a comptley new e-mail adress. Also Autodesk now supports many other school e-mail adress types, even ones that dont end in edu. You still need some kind of school adress though, yahoo hotmail etc wont work.

Actually i wouldn't pet a penny on the fact that you need a mail which terminates with @edu.You need a functioning mail adress from university (they do usually give one to you when you sign for university) and you can register.

The .edu rule only applies to the United States, as that is the school e-mail here. In not sure how it works elsewhere, but they should accept anything that is "school issued"

You can get it even if you're not from the US and your email doesn't end with .edu . I tried it and it worked, it seems that all you need is a real university email address.

I took advantage of this.

If your email ends in @net.au and you live in Australia and go to a TAFE, it's all good, you can get it no problems.

You should be fine with universities too.

I doubt it is about "name" . Any domain has an official owner. I believe it is on the basis of this ownership that things are decided.

Awesome, thanks for this.I might get my hands on some Maya 2011, I have 2010 but its a bit of a train-wreck when it comes to rendering which is horrible since it's essential to my Uni course.

I am interested to see how the new renderer, Quicksilver, is incorporated into 3d modeling. It is incredible how fast it renders and it represents a significant break through. However, I can say with certainty that it will take several years for Autodesk to completely integrate it into 3ds max to the level that MR and Scanline are and as is such, I will refrain from doing much more than experimenting with it until I am comfortable with it.

At this point in time Quicksilver isn't really anything to brag about. in at least cases it produces far inferior results (to Mental Ray, for instance) and at greater time cost. And as far as quality goes it is much, much worse than MR. It may be better than Scanline, but hey who ever uses that old junk anymore?

Get the BAT and Lot Editor here.

You will need Gmax from here before you can use the BAT though.

this is the best deal ever. I am now a proud "owner" (for 13 months, "extended babysitter" perhaps), of MAX, Maya & Mudbox 2011! WAY, WAY more power than I know what to do with, but I'm not complaining. :-)

I really like Maya, and mudbox. Can animations be made in Maya and be brought into SC4 somehow? (or do you need to use the BAB thing?)
