Did you know they have lots of temporary jobs paying between $12 - $18 an hour?

Seems a pretty simple sort of form compared to what i remember about ours.

Also, messing about with the questions is only going to screw yourself over.

I worked for them last year doing canvassing. Easy money. I'm hoping they call me back up next month for the follow-up interviews. (For people who don't return their questionaires.)

That is simply shameful.  It does a disservice to you, your neighbors, and your local/state governments.  It also shows just how little you know about how your government works and determines funding for those who really need it.

Of all the things the Federal Government does that people get upset over, filling out a Census form should be at the bottom of the list. Yes, even below national parks. Seriously, if you're going to just hate governance for governance's sake, move to Somalia for a year and then talk about how you liked the totally unregulated, government-free conditions there.

Just fill out the form correctly and send it in! There'll be plenty that the government does in the future that we can legitimately be angry about...

Personally, I think there are too few questions on the forms.  I am an genealogical researcher and the census records can be most useful in tracing family trees.   The early forms were nothing but tally marks.  The later ones had some useful information on them.  [link]  The more recent ones have been so short.   They have a 72 year privacy restriction so they won't be available until 2082.   But I can already hear those researchers sighing in frustration about how short the form is.

I love how they mail you something to tell you they're going to mail you something. 34.gif

We all should use that sort of tactic.

    Dear Simtropolis User:

I am posting this to inform you that I'm going to post here in a week about your census forms.

You can see an example of the 2010 Census form here: http://www.census.gov/schools/pdf/2010form_info.pdf. Remember that the Census is required by the Constitution. Not only is it used to dole out federal, state and local funds, representation in the House is determined by the Census (and in case you think it won't matter if you don't respond, Utah missed gaining an additional seat in 2000 by 857 people). The long form will no longer be administered because the Census Bureau now administers the American Community Survey once every 2 years. This is basically the old long form and they are doing this because demographics now change so quickly that data gathered from a decennial census would be useless in only a couple years. And, as I am a current census worker, please don't be "clever" or make a "statement" with your census form. Like other people have mentioned, it will only cause problems for everyone and if too many people do it, the Census will go back to your home to contact you to correct your form which only costs the government (and therefore the rest of us) more money. Just fill it out properly and send it back in, its not that hard.

Even though I am not an American, and live a few miles north of the border, I would like to remind you that the federal government is only empowered by the Constitution to conduct an enumeration, and this enumeration must be taken every 10 years. The federal government constitutionally cannot force anyone to enumerate themselves to the federal government, or answer any other questions for that matter.

The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the land. I suggest anyone who resides in that land to read it.

Having read through the form, I have to say it's a lot easier than our (Ireland) census forms, which ask far more questions, both about the house (such as sewerage, heating, water supply and internet connectivity) and the people (such as disability, health, employment, and much more). Censuses here are held every five years (last one in 2006, next one in 2011), as well.

Here (PDF) is a list of what the questions on next year's census will be about, and two examples of what the forms will look like (they do a micro-census of around 10,000 properties between every census) here and here (both PDFs!). You Americans have it easy in comparison. 2.gif It's illegal here to give information you know is wrong, same as there.

Also, out of curiosity, how are illegal immigrants dealt with on the census? Are they counted, or does it matter?

Looking at the form again theres no place to put if your not a Citizen. So i dont know how they count them.

I would gues they send a different form to resident/legal aliens and those with work permits and student visas,

    since they do use services.

Im sure LULAC is has some sort of program to get them signed up for the census.Probably thinking  if they fill out a census they will have some legal standing

The counting methodology goes by address. So, non-citizens (legally residing here or not) are counted.

Wasn't always so inclusive, though. Originally, a slave was counted as 3/5 of a person (the famous "three-fifths compromise"), and Native Americans weren't counted at all.

Originally, everyone was a tally mark.  By the 1850 census, "Free Inhabitants" were listed by name but slaves were still tally marks. The 1870 census listed the former slaves by name.

The Native American census records are not as well organized.   Some tribes had census records by 1885.  Other not until later.  But they don't seem to have gather much information.

Well "African-American" is hyphenated so I imagine "European-American" is.

Both terms are silly, imho.   I would be happy if we could all give up the hyphens and just be Americans.

This census is very important. You can't fix a country when the government doesn't even know the demographics.

on the subject of demographics, Meg-Is it 2082 for the individual census answers to be released, or 2082 for the entire results? Because i'd imagine that the results are going to be very useful for marketing companies.
