Rio de America

As a kid I was fascinated by maps, and therefore often used to draw my own fictional ones. One of these were called Rio de America, and was supposed to be a major city constructed somewhere in South America where the river of the same name (still being fictional...) meets the sea. Much to my surprise the Maxisland region of Sim City 4 looks almost exactly like the map I had drawn 15 years ago. Obviously I then started doing some terraforming and populating that region with the different suburbs of my own fictional world
I am in the early stages of development, but the region already has a population of 955.231, with the largest cities holding 281.000, 215.000, 162.000 and 120.000.
Here is a few examples of my progress so far:

<ahttp://student.his.no/data/his/9759/SC4/Alcatraz.jpg>

The small map of Alcatraz (pop. 0). This "city" actually makes a surplus...

Gotham_GreatParkOfGotham_atNight_2.jpg

The Great Park of Gotham (pop. 281.000)

Massif_AFB_IndustrialAreaBackground.jpg

The Air Force Base in Massif (pop. 120.000) with the industrial area down in the valley.

And here''s a question for everyone - have you seen this car before, and when... :

    ...continued:

You can find 60+ screenshots in my http://student.his.no/data/his/9759/SC4/>Rio de America gallery website, including an overview of the Region and some of the larger cities, and scenes from everyday life in Rio de America cities 10.gif . There's a caption to every image which explains a bit about that image.
I will try to keep you updated with new screens and information (in this thread and on the website) as the population of the region grows and new cities are developed.
Please feel free to comment on my "work" and ask questions if you have any !

Hey TNFJ, nice region. Unfortunately, your site has some issues... When I clicked on the thumbnails, the enlarged versions wouldn't load. 15.gif

Damn...I'll have a look into what the problem could be and fix it within a few hours. If others (reading this) has the same problem or has no problem with getting the large images to load, please post a reply so that I can see if this is something that affects everyone but me (as it works fine for me at the moment.).

that would be great cause I'd REALLY love to see some up close shots. It seems you put a lot of thought into your region. I have always wanted to make a really great custom region, but I think I may be too impatient.

Maybe I have to have some special viewer for your site? When I click on a picture it took me to some "Thumbnail Viewer" or something and I got the dreaded red "x" instead of a picture.

I deleted the software I used to make the site, emptied all caches and restarted the computer, but the site still worked fine for me. However, I will check the site from a different location later today, and if it still doesn't work for you within 8 hours or so I'll either post the large screens here or do the site with a different software to see if that helps.
I'd really like to know if others are experiencing the same problem. Anyone ?

I'm confused now, having played the game on my friends pc (as mine is far too slow to run it), we have built a fair size population up however never seen airbases or military vehicles on the streets, and what was the deal with that car (being British means i haven't got a clue).

you need the transportation pack (in the downloads section) to get the airbase - its a reward thingy.

Air base comes only if you install the transportation add on which is now available for all at the officla sim site.

first - the couple snapshots you posted look great and i will echo that it looks like you have put a tremendous amount of thought into developing the region ... however, i too am experiencing problems with the website ... i get just a "black" screen - or what appears to be ... i looked at the source and it appears as though the table should be there ... if i try to drag and hilight the page i can see the text, which are supposed to be links - unfortunately, the links are not clickable ... if i add the href's to the url, i get the thumb viewer to come up, but with the red "x" for all of the thumbs ...

very anxious to see some more of the region ...

The site will be fixed and things will be working within a couple of hours. I will post or edit when the changes have been made. Thanks for the feedback so far everyone !

    Yes, truly. Marvelous! Magnificent! Profound!

I'm actually thinking about designing my own region and making a "model" region and take into consideration aesthetics above all else. 23.gif sounds difficult... 21.gif

The problem has been fixed and the website should now work properly 1.gif

I will continue to update this thread as the region progresses, the website is updated and so forth. And some screenshots will of course be added here too !
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated 1.gif

    Very impressive!

I've gotton tired of the "max-population" approach and have also been working on a new region of "astheticly designed" cities. I'm nowhere near the population you've acquired, my play-time has been rather limited I'm afraid.

When/if I build my region up, I'll post pics.

VERY nice park areas! I just might have to model some areas after yours! 9.gif

Now that I got a good look at all the screenshots close-up, how long did it take you to do that? It has to be one of the best regions I've ever seen!!!

Thanks for the feedback people 9.gif
I've spent approximately three weeks on and off on this region. The city named Creatus has taken close to half that time (yet is only at 162.000), as it was my first experience with the game.

    UPDATE

    I've relocated the website to:

    http://www.tnfj.com/SC4/'>http://www.tnfj.com/SC4/>http://www.tnfj.com/SC4

It is still available at the previously posted URL and will be for some time, but the new URL is more likely to become the permanent site for the Rio de America pictures.

I've played a bit today, and the city of Creatus is now up to 170k. New pictures will be posted soon.

http://www.tnfj.com/SC4/>Rio de America has been updated with new screenshots and some minor layout changes. There are now a maximum of 30 thumbnails pr. page, which should make the index-pages faster to navigate. Most of the new screenshots are on page 2.

I've been playing a bit on a medium map (which are the largest there are in this region) called Montrose, bringing it from 15.000 to 30.000. Most of the new screenies are from that map, although I've also added some from Creatus (pop. 170.000) and one from The Cape (pop. 45.000)

Here is a screenshot which you won't find on the website:

    Creatus_63MaxWeberHouse.jpg
Hope I didn't kill anyone with that 123kb image 9.gif
This screenshot is the Bureau of Bureaucracy seen from the Creatus airport area, with the 63 Building in the foreground.

Feedback is very welcome ! 1.gif

    Man that is just cool.

I like your use of park items to pad in items instead of trying to make the road "fit" the building. I'll have to try that....

    9.gif

    Very nicely done!

I haven't been playing much lately, as I decided to spend some time checking out C&C: Generals which I bought at the same time as SC4. Pretty good stuff, but now I'm back to SC4. The region is now up to 1,1 million with the biggest city -Gotham- at 331.000. I haven't started any new cities, but I've been working on the 15 that are already started. I've taken a lot of screenshots, and will probably be updating this thread and the website either during the weekend or before the weekend.
I'm also contemplating which city -if I was to only enter one- I'll enter in the contest at the official site (I know, only for people in the US. I'll sort that out one way or another). Hmmm... 2.gif
