I loved looking through the "show us your" threads on the SC4 section, I got some great ideas for designing my own spaces.  One advantage of CXL is being able to go to other players cities to get some ideas... but, not all of us are using PO.  Even if you are, you can't see how well that road system, suburb design, rail netw.. um 12.gif

So I hope a few of you can post some road networks, showing road usage overlay data (under economy>traffic).  I personally find snapping the screen at night makes better viewing.  PS. I also found that holding ctrl and F11 makes a "levelscreen" encompassing the whole map in birdseye (opposed to shift and F11 which is megascreen)

Remember max posting size here is 800x600

Anyway, I'll start off with the only city I've made to date (and still a work in progress) Mannox Creek, current pop. ~700k.

roadmap1.jpg

There are no ingame highways in my city, I built my own from double one-way avenues (inspired from Asheroo's Rooleyson City journal), if you're wondering what the "eye" is at the west-end of town, that's my up and coming CBD 2.gif  Clicky pic shows a postcard in the daytime.

Unless its a european city its not too realistic because there aren't any houses just apartment buildings. In North America most cities are 90% single family homes with a downtown core or highrises and apartments. But it does look good.

...... hmmm interesting -- what city do you live in?

Most "major cities" in the US over 100,000 woudl have at least mid rises outside of the downtown corridor.  No a city under 75,000 is not going to be dense but certainly as you get larger the density spreads out over miles.  Most cities have a mixture of single, mid and high rises.  Charlotte for example still has single fmaily homes in center city as well as mid to high rises.  We also have mid rises as far out as 10 to 15 miles....... of course Charlotte (city - within city limits) is also over 680,000 making it the 19th largest city in the US.......  Mecklenburg County has a population of just over 900,000.

One thing you have to watch is "city limits" or incorporated area.  Each state classiffies this differentally and it can get confusing.  For example in North Carolina cities can annex areas more freely.  This means a city may have a larger "footprint" and thus be less dense becuase the population can be spread out.  In SC however cities must get voter approval to be annex -- and it requires a lot of legal, government oversight.  SC cities tend to be smaller and thus population stats are lower.  For example Greenville city is around 50,000 while Greenville (includes the city) is over 200,000.

Lets compare the two -- with land area:

Name STATE POPULATION LAND AREA (sq miles) DENSITY / SQ MILE
CHARLOTTE CITY NC            687,456 242 2837
GREENVILLE CITY SC              56,006 26 2146
MECKLINBURG COUNTY NC            902,803 526 1716
GREENVILLE COUNTY SC            395,357 790 500

The point above is look at how close the density of the cities are yet the population of Charlotte is 12 times that of Greenville....... very interesting.........

To show more comparison I am adding Atlanta in the mix and the actual MSA's as well.......

Name STATE POPULATION LAND AREA (sq miles) DENSITY / SQ MILE
CHARLOTTE CITY NC            687,456 242 2837
GREENVILLE CITY SC              56,006 26 2146

ATLANTA CITY GA            537,985 132 4082
FULTON COUNTY GA            816,006 529 1543

the note above -- is look at Fulton County and Mecklinburg County -- very close in size yet Mecklinburg is more dense -- anyone that has been to both Atlanta and Charlotte however will note Atlanta has more high rises and mis rises......

I see that some people have been inspired by my Rooleyson Journal with it's way of building highways.2.gif

Well, I might as well put mine up here too, here we are with the current road map of Rooleyson...

Well here's Qulara at night, I don't have any highways either (not enough space) but you can see the giant mountain that dominates the map and makes things tricky... anyway the city population is sitting at 750,000 and not moving much.

I love this kind of stuff. I live in St. Louis which has a disproportionately large metro area for it's size. It's an "independant city" which means it cannot grow in land mass because it broke away from St. Louis county in the 1800's so the county has grown and spread to a population of over a million people (not counting the city) while the city has dropped from 900,000 people in 1951 to 350,000 today (all estimated)

The way it's set up means there is the city of St. Louis and then there is also a county seat for STL county, which is another skyline with 20-30 swtory buildings, several of them, and lends for a very interesting photo from certain perspectives. It's only about 10 miles from the center of downtown STL.

Anyway, we have a good mixture of single family homes as well as flats (2, 4 and 6 family) which all look similar from the outside so there is a continuity to it. Then you get into the county and much of what directly surrounds the city is very urban in it's feel because if the city were not independant it would have annexed all of it decades ago and it would be technically a much larger city.

Kansas City is considered a lot larger populationwise but it occupies a much larger land area, as well. If you were take the land area of KC and set it down on top of STL you would have a city MUCH larger in population than KC or even many other cities in the country that are currently considered to be a lot larger. When you come here it feels a lot larger than most cities up to 900,000 people. There is a metro of 3,000,000 here.

Anyway, it's interesting how much the city you live in affects your view of what a city should be structured like. We have alleys here and when I moved to NEw Orleans years ago, there were NONE!!! I thought it was ridiculous to see people dragging trash to the curb in the city. That's a suburban thing where I come from.

ha ha.

Great idea for a thread, this is one of the things that I think Cities XL does very well.

@ Soundwave, wow, that's a neat layout - clever to use one-way avenues instead of freeways to get the same effect, and I love the cbd eye!

I present my glorious little farming community of Aloria, nestled around the great 3 rivers of the northern wetlands.

    cxlaloria0.jpg

With the city bordering the lake, the majority of all farmland is reserved for agriculture and livestock.  Of course, a recent change in zoning laws has given way to a much more extravagant future in farming with added infrastructure.  The rollout of these improves will come over time, and will not only benefit our hard working farmers, but also make the division of properties much more appealing to the eye.

No offence Rakeesh but that city's road layout looks like a commuting nightmare. You've certainly broken away from the standard grid layout outside of your downtown. :-)

Street map of Buonocitta as it looks right now.  It's mostly all suburban, with very few apartments (or high-density buildings of any kind), and one small office park/high-tech industrial campus.  Will change very shortly, I hope....

Androv is right, JaWood.  All the jigsaw parts, as well as the smooth curves to the right, across the river are farms. You can just see them in the distance in the second picture stretching in lines of colour from one river bank to the other. The part on the left being older than the right side, which are an experiment in shapes to see which I'd like better. As it stands, I'm redesigning all my farmlands. Long roads will smoothly curve and wind from one river to the other. The paved roads along the riverbanks and between these sections will provide a solid great between the colours that is much more subtle than the brown of the dirt roads within the sections.

There are also intermittent interstates cutting through the farmlands, allowing the farmers to quickly send out their produce and feed the the cities of Pollux.

Here's the roadmap for my city Retropolis while at 105k people.

There may seem to be heavy traffic in some areas but the largest I'm using for roads at this point are small avenues so it's not that much.

Just reached the 175,000 mark on my slowly developing city. Having seen the disaster that some of my city has ended up as, i've invested in better transportation networks in the newer outlying areas, and am thinking up plans to improve it in other places. Plans which will probably involve the demolition of entire neighbourhoods. Or maybe building a new raised expressway through my farmlands...hmmm...possibilities are endless. cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_55.jpg
