Just hit 500,000 peeps and you're good to go. Careful though, you'll most likely have to bulldoze stuff to get things right as highways and interchanges do take a lot of space on the map.

Note that highways are under a second heading, "fast lanes" and are not under "roads". Surprisingly a couple people in the game chat have also asked the question.

And like Gabry said, you need 500k in population or have expert mode turned on.

Highways are surprisingly expensive to upkeep.  I think the highway connection alone is 100k a tic?  I haven't need them badly enough to risk budget problems leading to deletion and wasted effort.

Highways are only expensive once you start using bridges/tunnels and connections.  I've noticed that even with a bunch of interchanges, a highway that doesn't have bridges/connections will not really cost much.  I think that the cost for bridges/connections is a bit excessive though.  Its like 100k per tick for a connection or something like that ><.

Highway connections are expensive indeed... as I found out when I laid down a highway, then deleted it again. I forgot the connection 3.gif bleeding 100k per turn with no idea why... until I checked my expenses tab ^^

I'll never understand why Monte Cristo chose to have highway links cost 100,000C per turn while regular street links are just 1000C per turn. That's just insane, highway links should be 10,000C per turn.

highways are broken especially when you need to connect the highway to its bridge.

The prices of the bridges and their up-keeping is ridiculous.

They have to work on that.

I stopped using highways (at least in my ugly cities) because theyre not really effective. They use alot of space and funds and hardly seem to have more capacity than an expressway. Also since connecting them to normal roads takes up so much space (no on-ramps) you cannot build many connections with the effect that the roads leading to them get clogged quickly. Its also funny to see how a small town can clog a single highway leading to the industry park.

So i hope that MC increases the capacity, so they are worth building again 4.gif

When I completed the freeway, my income went from +78.000 tot 67.000, that is pretty fair for me.

The Fast lanes should be twice as better because of the amount of traffic, 320 vs. 160 for expressways.

I have to agree that it takes on a lot of space, which has to keep free before buidling the actual 'fast lanes'
