The 30 St Marys Axe tower in London would be a great Marisian city hall.

I kicked some life out of my ol' (10 years old) outpost 2 cd, here are some pics for civic buildings/idealbb/files/Cmdcentre1.jpg
I know they crap but the game is non-3d, that is the command center (maybe a city hall counterpart) with subway-enabled to act as a transport hub between bases
if anyone got spaer time make a model in BAT as a preview, I guess it may come out very nice 22.gif/idealbb/files/Lab.jpg
This could be either the university or the  sience lab, huge behemothy boulding, self-contained and if destroyed produces a flesh-melting  (u become goo)virus(bio-tech) that kills anyone neraby (or better anyone in a radius of 500km)/idealbb/files/Medic.jpg
Whaty more can I say, medical centers (hospidals for the non-sci-fi-geeks)
I know this may not look like too original, but outpost is dead so we can relive it in simcity4, and BTW it is a GREAT game (a great balanced mix of sc4/c&c but it is mostly sc4 3.gif)

You like? St mary Axe is on my list of buildings to model so I'll make this the first building on my Mars line up if you like.

You know what is really going to be cool in this department:

The Prisons. I just know that we will some see pretty disturbing and wild maximum security prisons as this progresses. We are on Mars after all.

It's just a sketch, so tell you what you think of it:

wow, nice sketch emma, do share more 9.gif
I wish I was better at sketching, but I thought of a style that really should be in the game called 'marscrete' or 'marsform'. sort of how adobe blends into the desert, think about how a building blends in with the terrain, even if it comes above it, it still looks like it was just extruded from the ground, kind of like the building style on tatooine (sp? I forget after so long) in star wars. it's a very unique look that is also good at repelling the wind, and uses just the materials around, so it's very cheap. I realize that mars will have to have pressurized buildings, but you could easily seal it against a pressure leak, and it would be a lot harder to have such a leak in a building like that. it's better than a dome or any other human design so far because it looks like it BELONGS on mars, like it belongs in that enviroment. I'll try to find some pictures and post them up for ideas.

underwater pressure, and space suit pressure are two different things, a suit maintains a low pressure, so it can give you the bends if you just jump right into it, not the other way around. the ideal thing to do would be to have the entire building at low pressure, so you could remove a helmet, and then go back out, only in a larger dome would higher pressure be required. no? 1.gif

the reason a suit maintains low pressure is so that the joints will flex, in space the joints stiffen up from the air pressure becoming uniform throughout the suit, making it hard to force the air around when you say.. try to bend your elbow. if the entire system was kept at that low pressure, would pre-breathing and the reverse even be required?
    [/quoteMESSAGE][/bEGINQUOTE]

I just noticed this thread so I apologize in advance for this being a little outdated. I am a dive instructor and I can tell you right now that there is no possible way that someone could get the bends in a spacesuit. The bends comes from breathing air under pressure and because of the high pressure, extra nitrogen becomes disolved in the blood. When the pressure is relieved slowly everything is fine, when it is relieved quickly that is when the possibility of the bends comes into play. On Mars, the outside air pressure is probably close to 0 psi (pounds per square inch) At sea level on Earth air pressure is 14.7psi. Most space suits, and stations, colonies, etc, would be pressurized to the equivilent to about 8000 ft Earth altitude. This is the same pressure as today's commercial airlines. You dont see people becoming bent on every flight so you can see that this is not a problem. The problem would be if someone stepped out of a Mars colony building or took off their helmet. They either would explode, their blood would boil, or their lungs and bowels would get sucked out their mouths.

From what I know I would suggest making domed parkes on top and underground depending on their use.

Along with that idea I would propose an tunnel system connecting individual cities. These cities would be set up like the original Outpost was in terms of being underground.

I say this due to the lack of oxygen and presure with increased radiation on the surface of Mars.

we are debating ways to use subways and covered highways to allow intercity transportation more realistically. if we can boost subway capacity and keep a balance, we'll go that route.

that is one hell of a blueprint, however, doesnt it take away from the city concept?
