1023. Aw, science is great! Why'd you have to go and change the subject on us?

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Larks: The current one? Yeah it kinda deviates from my usual. Its from an artist that specializes in semi-anthroMobian (sAnM) Sonic art in the Fleetway universe (sAnM_%FW). This happens to be his rendition of an "older" Sonic. Of course most of you have no idea what that means, or just don't care. 3.gif

Well, first of all, considering that 150 m/s is equal to 540 kph or about 335 mph, yeah, it'd be pretty outrageous to see that on a highway sign. 31.gif

And no, kph is not SI because hours are not SI. Seconds are the SI unit of time. Based on that, a millisecond is a valid SI unit, as is a kilosecond, megasecond, etc. - but an hour is not, nor is a minute, day, week, year, etc. Any SI unit of speed would have to have seconds as the denominator. In base form, that means meters per second, although prefix multiples like millimeters per second or kilometers per second are also acceptable.

The biggest problem with using meters per second for highway signage is just it's generally not layman's terms - fixable, but a bother to fix.

Practically speaking, the unit is a bit on the large side, but it's still manageable....

    5 m/s = 18 kph ≈ 11 mph

    10 m/s = 36 kph ≈ 22 mph

    15 m/s = 54 kph ≈ 34 mph

    20 m/s = 72 kph ≈ 45 mph

    25 m/s = 90 kph ≈ 56 mph

    30 m/s =108 kph ≈ 67 mph

    35 m/s = 126 kph ≈ 78 mph

All those quiet 20 and 25 mph side streets can be 10 m/s. The 30 mph city streets and occasional odd 35 mph zone can be 15 m/s. 45 mph thoughroughfares match up quite nicely with 20 m/s. 55 mph urban freeways, 25 m/s. 65 or 70 mph rural freeways, 30 m/s. And those 75-80 mph zones out west can be 35 m/s.

Of course, the US has to finish its gradual thousand-year plan of going metric first. 21.gif

1043. The highest speed limit near my house is 275/9 m/s. The standard road speed here (where unsigned, built-up areas) is 125/9 m/s, but most areas are signed to 50/3 m/s. Unsigned, rural areas are limited to 250/9 m/s.

This is, of course, nothing compared to the 299,792,458 m/s speed of light.

    Two problems with this assessment.

First of all, you're comparing the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of sound in air, so it's not apples to apples. Secondly, the speed of sound varies somewhat based on temperature (and negligibly due to other factors). The 340 m/s figure is just a nice round number which is about correct for 15°C, but not for all circumstances.

Thus the reason of the word "approx." And since sound has quite a hard time traveling through next-to-empty space, its the best you can get to. And I am aware that sound speed varies by temperature, pressure, density, and other factors. You don't always have to be precise 99% of the time ya know. 3.gif

*random* Helicopter just flew over house at time of writing.

And I'm getting a tad tired of this math too. Can we talk about oscillating potatoes for once? 3.gif
