Oh man... ST 3.0 were the days!

I remember a lot of people that aren't really active anymore. Vid, dev, Makollig, Chicago333, Utora, Hordijk to name a few. I remember Mandursuro, Crystal Junction, and Digby being HUGE city journals back in the day. I also remember being active in chat way more and then getting promoted to moderating and chat op a few years back. Oh I loved old ST. Great times with great people. And ST continues to live on even as we near 2010! 4.gif WOW 7 years...

For me, it would have to be diagonal streets.  I remember seeing them in a CJ back when I was lurking in 2006, although I can't remember which one it was.  I then searched for diagonal streets, and found a thread that showed a street network based on the ANT network.  These streets didn't support RCI development, but several pictures showed them being used as diagonal streets.  Eventually, I learned about the NAM and downloaded it.  That was quite a day for me, and the rest is history.

My earliest memory is when I found out that I could make maps for the game and since drawing maps was a hobby of mine since I was a 6th grader waaaaay back in '76, I knew I had found my niche at ST.  Best memory though is when I received a PM from a certain beskhu3epnm inquiring about my map making techniques and less than two weeks later, besk, JPLumbley, wouanagaine, moganite, mr.food, MallowTheCloud and myself formed NHP and the rest is history.  Can hardly believe it's been 3 years since NHP was born and the rest is history.  In fact, NHP's 3rd anniversary is this Sunday [sept 6].9.gif

I have been here a LONG TIME..... I was one of the first people to see Sim City 4 in action (and to play it before release) ........on Simtropolis..... at the time I was a Store Manager for EB Games and as Sim City 4 was part of EA's presentation on our annual Managers Meeting that year. I come back from there and gave the info to Dirk and posted on the then BRAND NEW SITE...... :-) Good memories........

And from the look of it -- the oldest member to post in the thread so far.... :-)

I've been a member here for 6 years under 3 usernames but I generally can't really remember anything before the change from ST v3 to ST v4.

Hmm. Urm. I remember when Dirk met Will Wright but that might have been after that and I remember downloading that cheat region of cities like Golfbunny with tonnes of money and they were all named after admin on the site. Also Victory's very early BATs and a competition to win copies of Rush Hour when it came out.

I remember winning my trixies back in 2006 I was so stoked and especially winning best city planner after only having the game for a few months. I also remember one of the chat records I had to work that day but managed to log back in when there was still 80 some people in chat It was exciting!

I really miss some of the people I used to talk to on here though especially in chat, I've talked to some via PM but I think some are gone for good........

I remember when MrBisonm started his CJ -Nexis of Genesis- on Jan 20th/04, and I couldn't get enough of the awe of the masterpiece it turned out to be! Also it's amazing to see all the old fogies still around from the "good old days."

Old Memories with ST? There are plenty of mine ...

Crystal Junction, I loved it. And Digby, well, I think nothing and noone influenced me more than Llewellan and Digby. It completely changed my way of playing the game.

Someone remember Andrea George and his CJ Norfolk? Boy, back in 2005, I was so nervous starting Urland, and was so proud that he posted in my newbie CJ ...

I remember dhoppeii and his CJ "La plaisance country", how we competed as friends in rural layouts, how proud I was to get nominated for the trixie for the Best Rural CJ, how disappointed I was when it went to dhoppeii, and how surprised I was winning it one year later even though I had to put Urland on a loooong hiatus ...

I remember my frist steps with the NAM, trying to make overpasses but didn't succeed because I forgot to download something, how long it took to download it again and how positively surprised I was when the NAM and its overpasses finally worked.

Yes, those were the days my friend .... 16.gif

I remember to have stumbled upon a site where Dirk had a small Region map, with Billions of Simoleons so we did not have to toggle the cheat code for more money.

I really don't know if it was this site.

    .......but it must have been.

    Found this the other day:

    2004

Now that brings back memories We are now currently at 334,712 registered members. For some weird reason I still miss ST 3 8.gif. I did have more screenshots from 2004, but unfortunately the hard disk that they were one crashed.

Why is delivery by boat called a cargo and one by land called a shipment?

I remember creating the first member levels thread, asking what they were. (Local Yokel, City Slicker, and all those). It turned into a pretty long thread, with hundreds of posts. We were able to come up with a pretty complete list at the time. Unfortunately it got closed one day. 15.gif

I also remember helping to create the SimCityRush website. The owner, while working on a new version, closed it and SCR was no more. It was a lot of fun while it lasted though.

I joined in May of 2008, not very long ago. I was impressed by the diversity on ST and I thought it a great opportunity to get some questions answered. Some of my very first posts were in a thread I created to get advice on driving in Europe... more specifically, Ireland. Since they are LHD (and I hail from the US which is RHD) I had a few questions about that. Is the clutch pedal on the same side, Will I be able to shift with my left hand... that sorta thing. Everyone was very helpful and I ended up driving just over 1000 km across the Irish countryside. The first day I was passing a truck on the highway and almost hit it... since I'm used to being on the other side.

Wow...   I am always amazed (and a little curious) when an original 2003 member of the site, who has obviously been around and active all this time pops up with a post.

    Then there are guys like...

OK, pretty 'new' having only just registered in 2005...  but still only 4 posts.

I wonder if it would be possible to identify the earliest member of the site with the lowest post count but who is still regularly active.

Sometimes I click on the online members that I don't recognise at the bottom of the forum page, and it is amazing that you will often come across someone that has been registered right from the very beginning, yet has very few or does not have any forum posts at all.

abcvs: I may have been around awhile but!!! in looking over the rules and regulations of this website, I haven't come across anywhere yet where there is any rule that says that you even have to make a post or bat a building -ever; once; so many a year, a month, a day, etc. Yes, sometimes there are moments when I would like to post a comment, but at 5am, 5 min before I go to work, I don't have time and by the time I come home I have lost my train of thought on the subject, or someone have already answered or solved it in the thread already. Some threads shouldn't be anywhere near this website, as they are not related to it!. I am not a batter or modder (educationally I am an architectural technologist and a mapper) but due to real-life commitments I haven't had time to work on my cities and scan the forums too; (bought the game to play!) When I view the forums, etc., I dislike the vague comments like -that's nice-but really isn't, or the bad grammar or spelling. Yes, this website was the greatest next to sc4devotion, until you got a lot of infiltration of not so good material from other discontinued sites. (stuff like junk from EA.) I don't need to post an average of 6 or7 posts a day, or comment on everything there is on this site, or become a moderator. I come to play, get a few structures or ideas, and play! I want to apologize strongly to you and this website if this has offended anyone, but you did ask why I didn't post often.

You are correct:  there are no "minimum participation" rules.  Lurkers are welcome.   I don't think anyone was offended.  abcvs was just curious.  He gets like that sometimes.   3.gif

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I remember wayyy back when i was huge into sim city, they were assembling the sim mars team 9.gif

It was such a small, but ambitious project, i remember wanting to join as a modeler, but my skill was limited. i was very happy to return to Simtropolis later (like 2009 later) to find that sim mars is still around!!

I also remember some of the earliest member milestones and how big of a deal they were to the community 4.gif

Not on Simtropolis, anyway. There are sites that frown on such practices, and will do things like require you make a certain number of posts before some features are made available to you, or even delete inactive accounts.

There are also plenty of places without such policies where, nevertheless, having a low post count means the "regulars" will look down their nose at you. Some communities can get very elitist and unwelcoming to newcomers or outsiders. You should see how members in many online Rockman/Megaman communities berate people who aren't skilled at the games. Never ask for advice on how to defeat a boss or anything like that, you're going to get answers like "suck less", or the ever-amusing albeit unhelpful "shoot at it until it dies" (kudos if you know what that's referencing).

But even beyond all that, people who are inexperienced aren't going to be completely sure of themselves, especially on big old sites (like this one) where anyone new who shows up is immediately going to find themselves surrounded by giants.

Which is why it's important to not be judgmental based on join date or post count. The only inherent difference between a six day old member with 10 posts and a six year old member with 10,000 posts is familiarity.

i remember somewhat back (i feel you Barbarossa, my memory is the same way2.gif ) probably first memory i remember was scrolling through cj's and came across several awe inspiring ones. i was so incredibly taken back, because my building style was (as they say) newbish. all block like. i dont remember the first one that i saw, but the one thing that i thought was weird was how people had made cities from 90% plopped buildings 43.gif hahaha wow.....i can still remember the day i joined though..it was about 2 months after i had lurked around as a guest. ended up hijacking my dad's laptop so i could get online and join! 9.gif
