Help with installing NAM on a Mac

 Hi,

I'm trying to use NAM on SC4-Rush Hour. I've downloaded the NAM for Mac from Simtroplis. However, I'm very confused as to what is to be done with all the files. I'm sure it's there somewhere in the instructions or on the forums but i can't seem to find a clear cut set of steps/instructions to follow.

It'd be really helpful if someone would give the steps to use NAM on Mac. Like what is to be done with the .DAT files and where the other files need to be copied to. Also, I've downloaded another .zip file that says - NAM essentials. What do I do with those files too. I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.

Sashank

Just Unzip the NAM for Mac archive you've downloaded, and drop it into the Simcity 4 / Simcity 4 Data / Plugins

No need to rearrange DAT-files or something.

That should do it!

Hello esashank... Welcome to Simtropolis...

You don't need to rearrange any files, but you do need to go through several of the folders and remove the items you don't want. So, once you unzip and place the main NAM folder in your plugins, you need to check the following folders:

Keep all files in the main NAM folder.

Folders:

Automata Controller: You need to choose one of these files and pull out the rest.

Traffic Controller: Again, you need to choose one of these and pull out the rest.

Data View: You need to keep the one file that matches the name of the Traffic Controller you chose.

Rail Textures: You can pull all of the out for the default textures or keep the SFBT file or the three zzz files, not all four. These files determone the shading of the RR tracks.

Plugins: You can keep all or some of these depending on what you want to use.

Locale Files: Allows you to choose English or German. Delete the one you don't want.

Left-Hand Drive Folder: You'll need these files if you have the left-hand drive version of the game. Delete if you don't.

You can find all the instructions and some explanation of each item in the Documentation folder. It is advisable that you look through it to make your choices.

There is an update to the June 2009 NAM. Once you unzip it, replace the files in your plugins with those in the update.

Hope this helps...

You would not need the Essentials if you installed the newest version of the NAM (June 2009 with the update). The Essential pack is for updating files if items requiring NAM are released between NAM releases.

When I downloaded it, it was allready unzipped. If that's not the case: right click on your zipfile and choose one of the options. I don't know how it's called (I don't have OSX in english) but it should be very similar to "unzipping".

Hi guys,

I've done all as said in this thread and all others I could find - even re-downloaded the whole lot - still I can't seem to get NAM to work properly.

Quick facts: I have a Mac, use SC4 Delux for Mac (works fine without NAM) and downloaded NAM for Mac from Simtropolis (June 2009) + the Update (July 2009) - once I put the NAM (selected Automata - Radical, data view AB_easy, Traffic B Easy, deleted rail textures zzz files, left hand, and locale files english ) + Update it in the data - plugins folder I can still start SC - start a new city and configure it in god-mode but as soon as I want to start playing the new city the system freezes with no option to even stop the game but restart the laptop - which obviously sux big times.

Any ideas what might be missing - or I've done wrong? I'd be really grateful for any response..

I would recommend that you remove every other plugin, apart from the NAM, from your plugins, and then try and start the game.

If it freezes then it is the NAM that is the problem, if it doesn't then you must have a file in your plugins that can not run while the NAM is in the plugins folder. If that happens the you will have to manually go through your plugins and try different combinations until you track down the file.

Hi Hamish,

thanks a lot for your response!

I've tried again as you said but to no avail! 15.gif  it still freezes and the little wheel thingy shows 34.gif

As I have no other plugins or whatsoever in the folder - bc I tried to eliminate the risk already - (the folder I use is data -> plugins folder, there were like 5 files in there already and I left them untouched and just added a new folder for the NAM stuff) I guess this means the NAM itself has a glitch? What should I do now??? Would love to use it and I guess there must be a way to make it work - right??? 4.gif

Maybe one thing worth mentioning is, that if I play the game without the NAM everything works fine BUT I can't see the travel path if my litlle ones are taking their cars, it DOES show walk-paths, bus etc, but not cars. Just thought it might help to add..

I'm really looking forward to hearing more.. can't believe I'm not meant to be using the NAM!!! 8.gif

Hi Hamish,

Thanks for your reply!

I've by now managed to get the NAM working - when I selected the Automata STANDARD instead of Radical.. which I find a bit awkward and disappointing - but better than nothing still.. 5.gif

One things become more and more of an issue though - the fact that I cannot effectively see any travel paths (it will show in some very very few cases some walking distances and some "ferry routes"/path in color of ferry but following streets 22.gif)

Obviously is a big disadvantage as soon as it comes to public transport planning.. I can't make sense of this and haven't found anything on the net yet where someone had this problem before.. do you have any idea??

Would you still want screenshots? Whatof exactly?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

    best regards

SimMaster07 has made a very ingenious tool, the NAM Distribution Customizer. It is like an installer, except it is on the web, so it is platform independent and works on Mac. You go through choosing the options and at the end you download a zip which is made specially for you based on the options you chose. Then you just unzip the download to your plugins folder and you don't have to do anything to it.

More information and a link to it is here: https://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=11561.0

Is there a tool able to find each former NAM files (2007 one I guess) in the plugins folder, so I can install the newest NAM (2009 for mac) without any issue? Hamish, you told me in my thread that I would replace them by installing the latest NAM, but is it sure?
