Large residential zone using ctrl don't develop...

I'll start by saying that i love this site and all the plugins kick a**!

Recently i learned that if i use the ctrl key while zoning i can make one big zone easily, instead of doing the very tedious 3x3 lots etc etc. So i circle the streets around the area i want to make residential, lets say 9X9 or something. Then i hold ctrl and plop my residential zone in there. Now for some reason this zone will NEVER develop.... I open one of my larger cities with high res. demand and try it there, and it still never develops. Why would it even give me the option to make a zone that large if nothing will ever happen?

Thanks everyone, keep up the great work with the site!

4x4s work better, the reason why it won't work, is that there's no buildings that size. Maybe get CAM, there are huge buildings with that.

Thanks for the replies. Guess my question was obvious. Hey, what is CAM?

I think the biggest lot/bat that has been made is 6x6, i'm not sure if it's Residental, Comercial or Industry but i think it's for all of them, as i've got develepmont on both 5x5 and 6x6 & even on 5x4, 6x4 so you just have to test the differrent sizes to see what develops.

Ps: Also check both the "stex" and "csxlex" over at sc4devotion.com, and maybe you can find these larger lots/bats + as @earwax_man says getting CAM is a good idea too.

CAM stands for Colossus Addon Mod, and enlarges the building stage, from 8 to 15, adding seven more growing stages. Buildings with stages higher than 8 are called CAMeLots, and they work as normal buildings, but they are skyscrapers and, in some cases, supertall structures. Here, in Simtropolis, CAM is not very popular; in SC4Devotion's LEX you can download the CAM and a bunch of CAMeLots and in the SC4D there are the specific threads talking about CAM.

It should be noted that custom content creator Bixel has created several residential 'megalots' that may be around that size. I might suggest you search for his work on the STEX.

I have a video of my cities before and after CAM, this is it:

Why wouldn't it be popular? Itmakes city buildings so much more varied

Thats because 7x7 is way too big a "footprint" for any residential buildings.  The largest I have had any luck with is 6x6 and that is only for commercial zoning (it builds a shopping mall).

Yeah, CAM made my cities much better 4.gif Id you're willing to install all the base CAM buildings with their dependencies (technically not required, but you shoulkd do it). CAM is great.

Just to ensure some balance to the discussion...

I think playing the game might be better without the CAM for many of us. UDI missions are very difficult with such tall buildings where you cant see where you are going. And when everything is so big, it looks cluttered, and hard to enjoy the aesthetics, hard to see the ground level activity, and difficult to query specific buildings of interest.

Perhaps if there was a new "cam-zoning" option (a purple zone) to just place a 10x10 or 12x12 area to selected parts of a city (where we want massive growth), and yet still keep all else normal, I think that would be a good balance. Then I could set my city centers for a few blocks of some cities to CAM-growth. But due to these usage concerns, I currently prefer playing the game clear of the cam, and since i cant just turn it on and off with a plop tool. It is an excellent choice if you want mega growth though. I seek more out of the game than just that one element.

And to clarify on the original question of this thread, Industrial zones can be large and continuous, and smaller buildings will populate as they wish. It is only Residential and Commercial where the building must fit the zoned footprint. So without having larger lots in the game, large zoned areas will never develop.

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Anyway, I don't have CAM, so I wouldn't know much about it, but if you're looking for buildings with a large footprint, just search the STEX.

I like CAM because it greatly increases pedestrian traffic.  Never liked the idea of sims driving three tiles, as is often the case.
