Ah, the Toronto Pride Parade. I saw a segment about it on the news today and the first thing that came to my mind was "Zelgadis!"

Parades aren't my cup of tea, but it's great to see people who are proud of who they are.

Oh, and I failed to notice this:

Ten Reasons Why Gay Marriage Is Wrong

01) Being gay is not natural. Real human beings always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, organ transplants, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire world. That's why we have only one religion in the world.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.quote>

LOL! Whoever wrote that is one grade-A DUMBASS! He must live in an asylum.

One leech here... Interesting topic.

Did you know that leeches are hermaphrodites? Wow, I actually spelled that right the first time...

I'm not, but leeches are.

Perfectly normal.

But you'd be amazed at what you can get used to.

I was seperated from my future husband for two and a half years while we waited for our Canadian visas.  That, my friends, was agony.

P.S.  @thesonofgray:  Yep, that is, in fact, my complete real name.  And no, my bf didn't give me the middle name.  3.gif  In fact, he's taking my last name.  9.gif

Hmm... there's a wierd article I found, ah yeah, on my favorite Blog (or one of...) Futurismic. I think its mostly bull, but I submit it nonetheless for your pereusal.

Link!

I think we've known about the homosexual behaviors of aminals for ages. In fact, in many human societies in the past similar homosexual rituals and whatnot were not uncommon. So it either supports your theory that nature is naturally harmonious or gives the Hobbesian inside you a shot of Coca Cola Blak.

My Hobbesian didn't need the Blak, but he did ask for a double shot of peaberry espresso...

Well, Shockwave Flash beckons, youse. Enjoy the article.

Very interesting article!  I learn something new everyday and I love it.

450+ different species, eh?  All exibiting homosexual behavior?  Who's the oddball now!! 18.gif

So why do you think it's mostly bull, RC?  I'm curious. 21.gif

Well, it contributes to my general theory of the world being Hobbesian: Life is rough, brutish and short. Remember, just because animals kill each other in contests for mating, eat their young, their mates or their parents, kill for sport, (the Kestral does this) abandon their young... etc... doesn't make those either 1.new things that revolutionize our understanding of evolution (even though they may effect a species ability to survive) or 2. contain any meaning at all to humans who might engage in the same behaviors animals. do. I mean, there are also very strongly monogomous animals (birds are often a good example..)

My point is, there is no underlying 'truth' about 'queerness' to be discovered from the myriad of animal-cultures (or behavior sets). Like I said eariler, many human cultures in the past (some that still exist) have rituals and cultural memes similar to some of the things that those animals were displaying. But again... nothing particularly new there...

Just because we think its 'natural' doesn't make it beneficial. That's the mistake that the biologist is making, in my opinion. Indeed, both the question and the answers about why animals engage in homosexual acts lies deeper than that I think. Or perhaps, much, much shallower.

Possibly, instead of talking about the issue of homosexuality as what it is- homosexuality, are we going to say "Animals do it!" and leave it at that?

I'm more and more convinced that Kinsey was right about some things...

---

Simen: sorry to hear that. I'm hoping you didn't pull and RC and total bollox up asking her out or at very least getting her number? That sounds like something I would do. Don'y be an RC!

Eh, I had a 100 different crushes (though I'll admit I probably didn't know any of them as well as you knew her) and approximately 0 of them ever happened... but that was only due to stupid choices on my part, and nothing else. Maybe you should hunt her down and get her number if you miss her that badly 3.gif

erm, anyway, breakfast and all.

Urr...

That is not what she is saying. She is saying that it is beneficial because it allows us to get along (ex. same-sex friends, aqquaintances, co-workers), i.e. it maintains social stability.

Indeed, both the question and the answers about why animals engage in homosexual acts lies deeper than that I think. Or perhaps, much, much shallower.quote>
That may be, but aren't you talking about what the biologist thinks?

Possibly, instead of talking about the issue of homosexuality as what it is- homosexuality, are we going to say "Animals do it!" and leave it at that?quote>
Umm... Did you read the article? All of it? Because if you're trying to discredit the featured biologist, that doesn't really make much sense. It would make sense to say that if you were discrediting the scientists discrediting her, though.

Well Hobbesian sucks. 3.gif

I try to hold a slightly brighter outlook on things.

I do think there are many things to be learned from the other life on this planet.  But I agree that animals are by no means simple to understand and simple to characterize generally.

Homosexuality is not beneficial with respect to reproduction, but I definately don't think it is detrimental, especially with the condition of the human race.  Actually, homosexuality might very well be beneficial 6.gif as Joan outlined that possible fact in many animal species.

But none of this definitively explains the existance of homosexuality in humans and I think Joan Roughgarden was just trying to shed some light on that issue through the existance and more importantly, continued existance, of homosexuality in the animal kingdom.

It is all very interesting, nonetheless.

But work calls.  I wish I got paid for posting in ST forums. 19.gif

Well, it could be accounted for (in the animals) as diversionary or otherwise activity. Like they pointed out, bonding rituals. Of course, what sex and sexuality are to animals may be very different than what they are to us. But the key thing, that might have not been mentioned is, while they do engage in homosexual behavior, they still reproduce heterosexually. So, even with homosexual activity there is still heterosexual reproduction.

In some animal social groups, only one male gets to reproduce (or one or few females.) so, in that case, it might not be strange to see homosexual behavior.

In fact, China, because of their 1-child policy combined with favoritism towards male babies, is creating a wide rift in the numbers of males and females... not too oddly, homosexual behavior has increased in China. I'd like to find the article I read it in, but I don't have time right now (maybe later.)

While I don't buy the Freudian idea of sexuality being this pent up energy that needs to be released, there is -some- truth to it nontheless.

Edit: 500 posts... I pity the fool!

I'll find the article later (if you don't find it first...) and link it.

That China thing is interesting.  But there is a big difference between an increase in homosexuals because of more male social interaction or an increase in homosexuals because there are simply more males.

I think the latter is true and the former isn't.  Also, I think with an increase in homosexuals comes a decrease in ignorance about homosexual issues.  So part of that increase might be due to the gay males who would have otherwise lived a deceptive straight life to avoid the "abnormal" lifestyle of a gay man in China.

So, even with homosexual activity there is still heterosexual reproduction.quote>

Very true.  And I think that is further evidence of the theory that everyone is a little bisexual.  Although I think of myself as gay and could never imagine being attracted to a woman, I think the 'sexual spectrum' theory is very interesting and makes sense.

But I just don't think there is enough research and study done on this particular issue to be certain about anything.

I did a half-assed attempt to find that article and failed, but I would love to read it if you can find it.

'I wish I got paid for posting in ST forums.'

It would just hurt more should you be fired; however you are a more responsable member, unlike me. Who just couldn't keep away. But I'm lrrning.

We're having a good conversations over here [http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=107790&page=12] (I can't remember how to make links 3.gif) about whether or not a gay issues themed thread should remain open. They've brought up a few intersting points you can keep in mind the next time youse all start rambling on about anime and then not post for a month. 4.gif

-still in exile; vid.

PS: don't hate me... 4.gif

Well, other than the fact that I now know you are bigger than Heath Ledger, the thread seems to be at that unstable time when it hadn't proven itself as a respectable, surviving thread.

Much of the arguments on both sides are the same used in here.  But I do hope it survives and thrives in the skyscraperpage community.

Also, it seems that mods and admins are fighting each other and that's just no good. 28.gif

Go diversity and community! 44.gif

And don't ever do that again, vid!!  ST takes up too much of my time as it is and I can't afford to be hooked on another gay or religion thread. 20.gif  Plus, I didn't know you were gay.  Maybe I missed something earlier on.

Gay people can be attracted to women, to. 3.gif How many straight guys have WWE guys as their wallpaper? That's gay! 9.gif

Why do you keep suggesting people suggest you're gay? 3.gif Sounds kinda insecure to me!
