I think Northstar was the pioneer, at least as far as main stream comics went.  Of course, Marvel's Alpha Flight was nowhere near as big as DC's Batman/Batgirl/etc.

I hope there's no two-post rule or anything like that here. Anyway, I figure ST owes me a free post due to the recent site outage. 4.gif

What is a hate crime? Don't answer... or at least don't bother posting. Just think about it a moment. Maybe your definition has something to do with the victim being selected because of their beliefs.

What if the victim was selected because they believe adults have every right to have sex with small children? Again, please don't answer here. I'm probably pushing the edge as it is. Point is, that is probably a bad example. Because this belief is so horrible to most, it might be the exception to the rule. A crime to attack that person purely because of belief and not because of action? Probably. A hate crime? Many might say "just technically" if even that.

So think of a better example. Don't post it. Just think of it.

Is it at all hard to imagine someone who agrees with your definition but thinks your example is bad?

I'm not justifying hate crimes or disproving them. I'm only stating what I see as fact.

Hate crimes, regardless if they are easy to pinpoint, are so often a personal thing. Of course, they can involve mobs and gangs, etc. The biggest hate crime of all is war. Sure, there are wars over oil and resources all the time. But I feel other causes are rare; oil just makes for popular, well-funded wars.

I don't have a "Straight but not Narrow" bumper sticker on my car, as I said before, but I do have a rainbow that reads, "Our Diversity is Our Strength". Yes, I proudly flag my GBL support, and not just cause I'm a B. 4.gif But the sticker says and means a lot more to me than that.

I read the Batwoman thing in a BBC article. Interesting. Kind of funny, too. Also tiring; Things get old when one re-uses them over and over. :/

@koffee: Uh... Yah! 3.gif

Interesting post Koffee.  So much thinking.  37.gif

I kind of think about hate crimes as being associated with race, religion, and/or sexual preference.  Since maybe hate associated with discrimination is worse than just normal hate?

But that being said, I personally think a crime is a crime.  While I might be personally offended when I hear "2 gay men stabbed at a bar by a neo-Nazi supporter" on the news, I think "2 men stabbed at a bar after a failed robbery attempt" should be punished just the same.  While the motives might be different, the outcome is just as malicious, the victims are equally victimized, and the criminals are equally idiotic.

But that is all just my opinion.  If a judge or jury wanted to add punishment because of motives, I wouldn't try to stop them just as long as similar crimes aren't seen as any less criminal.  Does that make any sense?  Probably not.  I never make sense. 21.gif

What a turnaround from Lesbian Batwoman.

Just to let everyone know, the whole federal gay marriage ban failed miserably in the Senate.

And sorry for not editing my post above to say this. The Quick Reply is just soooo easy. *Me lazy*

I just realised, it's exactly one month to my birthday and my second year at Simtropolis!

Maybe I could have a gay-themed birthday party....pink balloons and guests must wear upside-down triangles....or...I could not have a gay-themed party of course >_>

Wow... learn something every day. I had no idea that gays could not appreciate the beauty of the opposite sex.

I already knew that some people (gay or straight) think that (physical) beauty is one of the most important relationship factors. Too bad for them.

You gay people... sigh. And you straight people... sigh.

Don't you understand that being bi gives you twice the opportunity to be turned down! 4.gif

This thread is the most off-topic thread in the off-topic forum. I think it should win some odd off-topic award or something.

There I go, getting all off-topic on how off-topic this off-topic thread is.

    Us gay's and bi's talk alot...>_>

But, I can easily appreciate a woman. My friend is extremely beautiful, and I often complement her on it (which usually results in her yelling "OMG I thought you were GAY!?!")

I can appreciate and recognize beauty. But attraction is an entirely different subject. And I know for a fact that straight guys know very well who is hot and who is not among their 'brothas' but they are so afraid of being labelled 'gay' they'd die before they say 'yeah, that guy is definately good looking'. This is a generalization of course, but I have yet to find a straight male who openly says things like that without being confronted about it.

Yes this closet is very large. And considering the door to the closet has been opened around 19000 times in less than a year, we must have a very durable door.
