Hello, i'll try to receive any request for a new RL map here...

I want to mention some rules before going:

1.- Please be patient for your request, I do accept only 3 request per week (or when I can more...), so you better get your recervation before someone takes it first, i'll do the maps according to those who asked first... I can do all the maps that I can per week, not only limited by 3, but just to take a control of what im going to take. I'll give a call when the requests are open or closed, any request in a closing time (or after 3 request in same week) will be rejected or ignored. Please do only 1 request per time, and wait for someone else to request, then you can request again up to only 3 times per year. Please view number 10 for more info in map packs. If some of the requests are not made in the week requested, that would count to the next week, so the request will remain closed or open depeding if I do or not, Im human so RLS takes most of my time.

2.- When asking for a map, please give me the next info:

     a) A picture of the RL place and its landscape, I rather a clean satellital picture from google earth or other satellital explore, please host offsite your picture, must be 800x600 pixels max, also include the selected area you want me to cover, please see c) for more information...

    b) Tell me the complete name of the area, including in what country is located, state and even township, any reference is welcomed!

   c) Please tell me the entire area that you want me to cover, if its 25km X 25km, etc please no areas more than 35 km x 35 km, you can take that meassures with google eath making a grid over the area you want...

   d) Please tell if you want medium, small or big grids for SC4.

   e) Please tell if you want it realistic scaled or down/up scaled. Please see number 11. for more info. Give proportions as like 1/2 (the map will be doubled scaled down) or -1/2 (the map will be doubled scaled up,  its important to give the negative sign (-) for the scale to be up).

   f) Give enough details and information how you want the map, so I can do it right, If you made a mistake while requesting, any correction would count as like a second request or third max and you'll wait your turn for it. But if the mistake is mine that would not count as a request and i'll try to correct soon as I can.

If you dont give me all the info I ask, then I will not do the map.

3.-The maps will not be uploaded at STEX, a download link will be posted here for its download when its ready so please view this forum thread if you requested a map...  YOU WILL NOT UPLOAD ANY MAPS THAT I MADE TO THE STEX OR ANYWHERE, that map its only for your use and mine creation. The download link will link to a personal data file sharing.

4.- Before requesting please see the entire thread for any map already made, I will not do the same map over, you can request only small changes as like the SC4 tiles map. I'll try to give an updated list of maps that will be listed right on this post.

5.-USA maps are 10m-30m bits quality, thats means are best maps you can request, Canada and Mexico maps are 30m bit, a good option too, rest of the world (international) are 90m bits, bad quality maps but worth...

I dont take request from maps of the North pole (up to the artic circle) and neither from Antartica... (including North Canada, North Europe, North Alaska and North Russia).

6.-All maps are made with SC4Terraformer, so I may suggest using SC4Terraformer or SC4Mapper, I dont take 8-bits picture request, only SC4M files, so you should know how to import it on the game.

7.-I dont take any in game renders, so it up to you on what terrain mod to use and render it, you can post if you wish your final render of your region here, that would be appreciate! The only render I will post is the SC4Terraformer render...

8.-You can give me some suggestions on how the landscape looks, as like manually modify the terrain. For example sometimes rivers, lakes, dams, falls are not previsualized in the SC4map, I can do special terraforming in that situation, but depending on how the map is, i dont intent to expend most of the time on working on manual terraform, so that would be up to you to terraform in SC4Terraformer or in game...

9.- You can only request  3 maps per year (limiting that everyone can get a map in time) be careful  when picking your map, your map is intended to use it by your own for a CJ or something else. (the count starts when you ask for your first map),.

10.- You can request a map pack in case if the map exceeds the 35km x 35km size, that would count as like 1 map request. But only a limit of 4 map pack... within the limit of 35km  x 35km, thats mean I can do a 4 piezes map of 70 km x 70 km max.

11.- You can also request the scale of your map, this is important if you wish to cover an area of more than 70 km2 or less depending, and I will scale it, please dont request me in doing the whole united states  (for example) just an area as like 350 km2 max, take note that the area would be scaled down, so the quality will be worse, but in difference if you want a map scaled up, the quality gets better... I can do maps as for example the entire LA area in a single big city map, or anything you get in mind but please clarfy this option so I can do it right.

Thats all, hope that wasn't hard eh, well request are now open! remember, after 3 requests are automatically closed until I do the 3 requests....

Thanks!

An Open Post To All.

First of all, I wish to comment to anyone interested in requesting a map created by Eblem.  He is an EXCELLENT map maker.  Any map created by Eblem will most certainly meet and exceed your expectatiions.  His mapping skills are outstanding.  Eblem is the author of many mapping tutorials available at SC4Devotion.  He creates his own maps (available on the STEX) as well as collaborates with blade2k5 in creating maps.  As a member of LBT, he creates many excellent BATs which are also available on the STEX.  Eblem has also created a number of excellent terrain mods which are available on the STEX.

Secondly, I want to comment on Eblem's Point 3.  One of my responsibilities at Simtropolis is acting as a STEX Moderator for uploaded maps and map-related items.  Consequently, be advised that I shall be strictly enforcing the conditions of Point 3 in the above post.  Any map that Eblem creates for a Simtropolis member that is uploaded to the STEX by that member SHALL BE REMOVED from the STEX.  There are no exceptions to this statement.

Finally, I have a personal comment for my friend, Eblem.  I am excited at the service you are offering to Simtropolis members.  Your service is a welcome addition to the mapping services already in place at Simtropolis.  I look forward to your maps and stand ready to assist you in any way I can.

Good luck to you, my friend.

I would love a decent map of New Orleans, Louisiana, if that's even possible - I know it's below sea-level, so it might not be.

You have creative discretion, you can make it as big or small as you want. Even a semi-realistic approximation on Terraformer would be better then the grayscale maps I've been able to find. Only thing I would really love to see is the major canals. Otherwise, have at it, the canvas is yours...new-orleans-satellite-image.jpg

And thank you very much for voluteering your time, even if you can't do my request!

Google Earth refuses to cooperate with my computer, but here's a couple satellite images I found:

Eblem-

I would like to request an accurately scaled map of the Copper River area of southeast Alaska, USA.  I would like a final map of 40 x 40 US miles, which comes out to about 65.5 KM square, so this could be a request for 2 maps, per your instructions above.  So long as I can "marry" the two maps to each other, I'll be a happy camper.  I would like the map to be comprised of all large city tiles, 256 of them, 16 to a side (16 x16).  Here is a Google Earth picture of the area:

screenshot002e.jpg

All color variations are Google Earth's, not mine.  The scale in the lower left hand corner shows 20.2 miles (not KM) to the first tick.  The larger blue squares at the left center of the map show the location of the town of Cordova, Alaska.  I would like the finished maps(s) to include the area shown at the lower rights as "Katalla", but don't necessarily want/need the islands offshore of Katalla.  The Katalla area could be the lower right hand limit of the map, then go 40 miles north and 40 miles west from there.  I have another map, a USGS topo map I got from the Microsoft Terra site which may also be of help to you:

downloadsta.jpg

I don't have a scale for this map, but you can perhaps see it is approximately the same as the Google Earth map.  This map shows the land forms a little clearer, especially the offshore barrier islnads at the mouth of the Copper River Delta, which I would like to have included in my map, if possible.  As a mapper, you probably already know that the large black rectangles overlaying the land forms are US townships of 6 x 6 miles each.

This could be a real challenge to render into an accurate map, as there are some high mountain peaks that, if possible, I would like to have accurate in height.  Also, a lot of the white areas you see on this map are glaciers, which I don't think we currently have any way of rendering.  I don't think that really matters a lot for my purposes, as I think this map would be pretty much unbuildable if we rendered all the glaciers.  The glaciers do have topographical contours on them though, so we could probably render them as valleys.

The braided water channels of the Copper River Delta are important to me and I would like to keep them if we can.  In fact, all the water features are important to me, but I DO NOT want any above sea level water anywhere on the map.  I will render that in game myself using ploppable water tools.

I have been doing considerable research on this area for the past 2 weeks or so, trying to figure out how to make this map myself, and I have tons of data I would be happy to forward to you should you think it would be helpful.  Last night I downloaded 56 township maps with very detailed topographic information, all in TIFF format.  I was going to try to cut and paste them all together into a single large map 8 townships wide in the east/west direction and 7 townships tall in the north/south direction, then crop out my 40 x 40 mile final map.  If this mapping job is not to your tastes, then maybe I will continue as I was doing.

Lastly, here is a picture of the RL town of Cordova, Alaska, so you can get a little bit of an idea of the dramatic landscape of the area:

screenshot003hsv.jpg

This image was taken from an airplane and is looking almost due east.  The Copper River Delta is about 20 miles east of Cordova.

Let me know if I can help in any way or if you need more information.

slystone2: I know it'll be hard doing New Orleans sure most of the lands are under sea level, so one option would be working on it manually by looking ge images and getting most realistic possible to it.... ---working on your request soon!---

ldvger: thats a perfect example to give information how you want your map, and of sure i'll do your map, my only worry is about the data zone, I hope the USGS covers that are you want. Oh btw youll get a 4 map pack, not two because the area you are requesting exceeds the 35x35... but no problem... ---working on your request soon!---

Survivorfan: Im sorry but please give me better details how you want your map, please see number 2 for what Im requesting, as I can see you want me to do a huge area, the only option is scale down, but tell me by how many you want it to be scaled down? ---Pending decision---

Well only one more request to close... hurry up!

Map size: 11x12 SC4 large tiles

    Type of config tiles: Large

General Locatation: New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

    Author notes:

This map is most possible accurate to the real one, canals, rivers, lakes are most possible previewed, im not sure if this map is after or before Katrina. The blank sand preview is 1m sea level! so it should work propely in game. Hope you like!

    4 mixed maps in general:

    64365633.jpg

Author notes: The map were scaled down in 1/2 from the original size, to fit accurate as author request... also due RAM difficulties I had to divide the map into 4 map pack of 8x8, counting as like only one request... the original data was taken from USGS Alaska DEM, its somewhat has nice details but not that great looking... you can see this example...

This is your original photo of Cordova, Alaska...

    screenshot003hsv.jpg

Same place but in SC4TF, like?

    cordovapreview.jpg

You'll alose will notice about the water sollow and the shoreline cliff, in that I had to work with photoshop to give its shape (originally It didn't had)  but if you want your map better than that you'll have to manually work on it using terraformer or in game god mod, im sorry...  as for the lake you should do it by plopping water, actually ias hard doing it using SC4TF...

Hope you like the map and the concept, that was best I could do... and fact that was a hard request 3.gif anyway... enjoy!

Download the map here: (locked by author request)

More request are accepted by now... (max 3)

Heblem, thanks so much!! Can't wait to use the New Orleans map - looks like I'll be seeing lots of bridges, and using SG's canal set  to form a huge canal network!

Thanks again, and I hope you enjoyed making it!

The map looks great, I can't wait to get home and play with it.  I don't know yet how to install it into my game, but I will figure it out, I think.  I have read your tutorials and will review then quickly again now before they kick me out of this little internet cafe.

First thing I have to do is join all four maps together!

Thanks for you help, I really appreciate it!

slystone2: thanks, hope you can use those SG canals, I tell you this because some canals are diagonal... anyway enjoy!

ldvger: You need SC4Mapper or either SC4Terraformer to install these maps, some of my tutorials explains you how to install these... as for join the four maps, well you can do it (looking again at some of my tutorials) but I coulnd't make a bigger map cuz my computer couldn't handle it (2 gb ram)

Right, I have an odd one. Mine is the Isle of Wight, my home county, in the UK.

It is an Island, and if you could include the 'mainland' as well that would be awesome. I would basically love a really accurate map of the whole area of the Island. It is a beautiful place in real life, but the urban design isn't great.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=isle+of+wight+uk&sll=37.335224,-76.728516&sspn=19.73479,45.703125&ie=UTF8&ll=50.705591,-1.224976&spn=0.123064,0.487518&t=h&z=12

so that is the location on google maps.

Here are two images from that google map- the area I would love to be covered.

    19020607.jpg

    31688730.jpg

I would love for you to be able to do it. Large City Building Sections if you can...especailly if you can do it so that a bridge can connect the mainland and Island. But don't worry if you can't!! 9.gif

    Thanks for the service!

Sorry if I didn't give enough info!

Scaling down by 80% would be fine. I'm not too concerned about the mainland. I would really just like the Island. In fact, I'd be happy with anything. I think that it is really kind of you to do such things!

Again sorry, for being a pain 15.gif

    Eblem-

Using Mapper I created the four new regions in my game folder last night, then opened my game for the first time a weeks to load up the new regions and see what they looked like in game.  I've never loaded a .SC4M into my game before, so the landscape colors were a bit of a shock at first (when looking at the new region in region view for the first time).  Experimenting, I clicked on one of the new large city tiles and after the usual "Reticulating Splines" messages, just about fell off my chair when the city loaded.

It was GORGEOUS!  I have GLACIERS!  How did you do that?  I was so excited, I stayed up until 3 am loading city after city, first the SE region, then the SW region, and got about 1/2 way through the NW region before I had to stop for the night and go to bed.  Each region is 8x8 large city tiles square and looks so huge!  I was worried that the glaciated valley would cut down on buidable area, but I can see this will NOT be a problem.

I did go through your tutorials over at SC4D but could not find anything that addressed how to combine 4 regions into one super region.  I have 4G of ram in this computer, so I don;t worry too much that it couldn't handle the super large region.  I actually was able to load one in my game a few days ago that I created from a greyscale PNG I made in Photoshop, but I used a different technique, no TF or Mapper files at all.

Right now, I'm not 100% certain I really want to make one super region after all.  I am giving thought to creating a collaborative efoort, similar to what Dedgren did with his MD "Three Rivers Region" and am thinking having 4 seperate regions might be easier to handle if there are multiple folks developing areas.  Still, if you could PM me with instructions on how to combine the 4 maps into one large map, I would certainly appreciate it.  Or, direct me to which tutorial tells me how to do it.  That way I could still combine the 4 maps into one, if I decided to.

My only disappointment was (notice the past tense) that you grabbed an area north and west of where I had originally planned.  While I was loading cities one by one last night, though, I started falling in love wth these beautiful maps and so decided to be happy with what I have.  This morning I pulled up the maps I have and was going to send you a copy of the same one I posted above (not the Google Earth one), with the area marked on it that I had originally wanted and ask you, if you felt like it of course, to redo the maps moving 2 large city tiles south and 2 large city tiles east, eliminating the corresponding 2 city tiles on the north and west.  I had really wanted to include the barrier islands out to sea from the river delta, but when I looked at my marked up map this morning I saw they are a couple of miles offshore and really are not much more than very large and semi-permanent sand bars.  They may not even have shown up on the maps you used to create the 4 you made for me.

As for the rest of your comments, I don't mind the cliffs at the shorelines and am already thinking I may leave them as is instead of terraforming them down to beachs.  Time will tell.  I will have to make the game water areas deeper, but that's easy to do.  The "scars" of the above sea level watercourses in the real life landscape came through very clearly in your maps, so plopping rivers and lakes is also going to be rather simple.

All told, I am overjoyed with the work you did and can't wait to display my new regions over on my CJ.  Thank you so very, very much, you have ended what has been a very frustrating couple of weeks for me!

    Lora (ldvger),

Im glad to know that you like the region, if it possible when you get time, please show us a region census teaser of your rendered regions and post it here, it wasn't hard really to do it, since just the data did all of it... 2.gif

As for the tutorial, there really isn't one, but i'll explain you here, first look at this tutorial

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4637.0

This one explains you how to get the map png, you can follow if you wish the tutorial on how to install your SC4M file but not necessary if you already got your maps on game... you should extract 4 png's from the 4 maps you have installed...

-Using any Photoshop CS# make a new blank sheet of 4097x4097, then at your tool bar (image/mode) make sure that the greyscale and 16-bit are selected.

-Open with photoshop the 4 PNG images you extracted, then copy paste every png to your 4097x4097 sheet until you get all together... make sure that the colors contracts fits into its borders, you can moderate that at image/adjustments/ Brightness/contrast...

-Once finished, save your new big png (must be 16-bit greyscale)

After done, follow now this tutorial:

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4638.0

Make sure first to make your new region folder with the config.bmp as the tutorial explains.

If something else is missing i can take you another request, maybe by making another map of the missing area, but please show some images the exactly place you want me to cover... then instead of having 4 maps by now you'll get 6... lol

Glad to know that youre sastified with those small issues, as you said the time will tell, can't wait to follow your new CJ and no problem its a pleasure to help you, enjoy your new regions!, if anything else needed just tell me...

    Take care

    davidaiow:

Thanks looking forward to your review, enjoy your new map!

Right, I have opened up the region and had a quick play and I have to say, I'm mighty impressed! I think I should have asked for a region half the size to get the scaling right, but I can do that myself, and the only negative I can find is the fact that the relief isn't 100%, but that is entirely my fault due to such an awkward request! What I'm most impressed by is the speed in which the region was made!! Unbelievable!

I cannot thank you enough for makign this for me, I am forever in your debt 3.gif SimCity has just got a lot more fun!

    Again, thanks again!

    Eblem-

Well I finished rendering all the maps yesterday and they are gorgeous.  I immediately posted them on the CJ here on ST called "Apocrypha".

I have already used Mapper to create 4 PNG images of all 4 of the maps.  I tried to marry them all together using GIMP, a freeware paint software program I downloaded two weks ago, but I'm not finding it to be very user friendly.  I have Photoshop and know the procedure for creating a 16 bit greyscale image.  I have also had better luck using PS for cutiing and pasting maps together.  My biggest problem with PS is getting it to save my newly created big greyscale map in any format other than PS's own proprietory file extension.  I can't seem to get it to save as a JPG or a PNG.  That's why I've been using GIMP instead, because I CAN save/export newly created files as either JPG or PNG.

I also already know the procedure for creating a new region in my game using an 8 bit greyscale map.  I did that last week, experimenting with taking my existing region and making it 4 times larger by increasing it's pixel size to 4097x4097 from the standard 1028x1028, then turning it into a greyscale, using the GIMP program.  I could not find a tool in GIMP for saving an image as a 16 bit, which was a little frustrating.  I had tried this first in PS, which is where I ran into the file extension problem.  I got the newly enlarged region to load in the game (took 40 minutes!), and it was awful...looked like some alien planet.  Not sure what I did wrong, but I dumped the region a few days ago.

I have one question.  Why do we need to use 4097x4097 pixels instead of 4096x4096?  That extra row or pixels shows up on the far west and south edges of the NW, SW, and SE maps you made me like a little fence.  I can live with it, no problem, just wondering why we add the extra row of pixels.

As for graphically illustrating the areas I would like to have, if you have time and want to do it, I'll try to show you in a nother post.  My internet connection is a bit unstable these days and I don;t want to lose this post if I keep it open while I'm working over in PS.

Back in a few with a picture.

davidaiow; great, hope you enjoy your new map, is not 100% accurate due the data im using is poor quality but if you know a place where I can get top noch quality GEMs of the UK, that would be appreciate.

    Lora:

I wish I could do that by my self and just giving you the big map, but unfortunalety my computer is only 2gb of RAM, I tried it but didn't have success, thats why I decided to pack them. Its a shame to hear about your PS, not sure what version youre using but it supposed to save any kind of file without problems.

As for your question, thats the correct procedure of a map size for the config.bmp, adding +1 pixel size the config can be made correctly.

Waiting for your pictures of the area you want, as I told you at your CJ, its better to do another map of the missing area than changing the current 4 maps. Its up to you to keep with the maps separate or join them, I can't help in that subject.

Ok, here is the image I made, please excuse it's amateur look:

    newbigmap.jpg

The large "X" represents the area of the new map.  You can see we will lose 2 large city tiles all along the west edges of both the NW and SW maps.  We will also lose 2 large city tiles along the north edges of the NW and NE maps.  Where the "X" runs off the maps, that is areas I would like added to the existing maps, equal to 2 large city tiles along the south edges of the SW and SE maps and 2 large city tiles along the east edge of the SE and NE maps.

The other two lines drawn within the "X" area are one large city tile into the "X" and represent a possible alternative to that descibed above.  This alternative would lose 3 large city tiles along the north and west edges of the exisiting NW, NE and SW maps, then adding 3 large city tiles to the south and east edges of the exisiting SW, SE and NE maps.

Keep in mind that what I would like to do is capture the small barrier islands that are about 5 miles out to sea in the south west direction from the mouth of the Copper River Delta.  I think the 2 tile option would be better than the 3 tiles option.  However, before you do anything at all, first check the data you used to create the first set of maps to make sure those islands are shown.  Here's another picture of the map I posted last week, this time with the islands circled so you can see what I'm looking to try to add:

    downloadedit.jpg

If the data you have and used to create my maps with doesn't show these islands, then don't redo the maps.  If the islands are too far offshore and don't fall within the 2 or 3 large city tile option outlined above, don't redo the maps.  I don't need ALL of the islands and I don't need all of each island.  If some of the islands run off the map, that's fine with me.  If any of the islands circled above have to be left out entirely, that's fine too.

Lastly, if this is too much work and you don't want to do it or you don't have time, then forget it.  Now that I know how to create my one monster sized region, I will be perfectly happy to play on the maps you already made me.  Just let me know either here or via PM whether you are going to try to do the edit or not, because I don't want to spend more time with the maps I have if I am going to get a new set.

Thanks a bunch and I hope what I want is clear.  If you have any questions, ask them here or PM me and I'll see what I can do to clarify things for you.

Ok, no problem i'll going to work on your new request.... instead of losing 2 tiles, i'll going to add these 2 tiles, getting 4 maps of 9x9, plus your new requested area... right now im working on it, expect to download by this night CTM  give me a hour

Lora, im sorry but im not able to get the data to the south east due some configurations of the data by USGS (the requested area to the east is not avalaible), by more I select the area, I just get the same area over and over... the only difference i can do is doing the map 2 tiles south, but not to the east... I did it, but now im having problems on rendering the new map (RAM issues again) as my procedure before diving the map i need to get it complete then divide it, but this time i couln't get it complete for divide it. (the problem is that getting the map complete by SC4Terraformer won't load it, sometimes it loads but only can export for modify the map, as the case of the latest map i sent i had luck, lol

Again, im sorry for not being able to help you by now, but sincerily you have now a great map! some of best i have ever done.

    Thanks!

    Eblem

    Hi Heblem,

I want to request a scaled map of Cape Cod, Massachusets. If the scale ends up too large, please make it the maximum size scaled down and split into the 4 map pack. By tiles, I want it all LARGE tiles.

Since my google earth isn't working right now, here's a pic of the area:

If you need more info, please say so,

    Andrew

ac94: The area exceeds the 35 km limit, so yes i'll make a 4 map pack for you of 70km max... with a 1:1 scale... or either i can scale it down to 1:2 to get a single map of 35km... you decide... until your answer i'll get working on your request.

    Eblem-

Ok, now I am having a problem making the one big map.  When I follow the instructions at the first tutorial of how to export a region as a 16bit PNG file, I get a greyscale of the region when I open it in Photoshop.  Under the PS "Image" menu, greyscale and 16 bit are both checked.  I create a new PS file at 4097x4097 pixels.  Then when I go back to the greyscale pic, I chose "select all".  However, when I open the "Edit" menu, all of my cut/cppy/paste options are greyed out.  I cannot copy the 16 bit greyscale png image into my new empty 4097x4097 file.

Am I doing something wrong?  I am using Photoshop 6.0, BTW.
