I grew up in Santa Barbara, California and, with the recent terrible fire, there have been looking at a lot of maps of the area.  I had kinda forgotten what an interesting landscape it was, so late last night I went over to the USGS web site and downloaded a fairly good sized DEM map in TIFF format of the area.  I've been working my way through the "Making Accurate Scale Regions Using USGS Data" tutorial and have gotten as far as step three, working in the graphics editor program (Photoshop 6.0 for me).  I admit I am a little lost/confused about what to do next, as I am just not understanding the instructions concerning how to establish accurate scale.  I'm also not 100% certain I created my grey scale correctly using the MICRODEM program, it looks very white/light to me and I'm afraid I may have set my elevations incorrectly.

I can email you the zip of the USGS download I made last night, if you are willing to map me another large region.  Just like the last one, I'd like this one to be 16 x 16 large city tiles, appromimately 40 miles square.  Let me know if you are interested and I will find some more maps to show you the area I would like to create a region from.

I have a Santa Barbara map on the LEX, even though it's exclusive to the LEX.  It was my first Accurately scaled map and coincidentally, Santa Barbara is where I was born and raised. SmileyCentral.comimage.gif

Your map looks pretty much like the one I *think* I am trying to make.  However, I went over to MapQuest this afternoon and looked around at the SB area and found that the 40 mile square area I am thinking about would allow me to include the offshore islands, the coastline all the way up to almost Point Conception and down to El Rincon/Punta Gorda and inland to the east side of the Lake Cachuma valley:

66126531.jpg

The square outlines above is roughly 40 miles a side, scaled to the map.  I included LA to give Eblem some reference as to where Santa Barbara is.  And, once I made this little map, I realized the map I was trying to make (and now, your already made map) is only about half the size I wanted it to be.  I had really wanted to include the offshore islands but was afraid they were too far away from the mainland to also allow me to include a decent portion of the Santa Ynez Valley and back country.

I lived in SB from 1965-1976, graduated San Marcos High School class of '72, La Colina Jr. High 1969, and Peabody Elementary 1966.  Every time I visit SB I wonder why I ever left, but after a week there, I am ready to return to my beloved Seattle.  Santa Barbara is without a doubt a very picturesque town and the weather is almost always absolutely perfect, but I get soul hungry for fir trees and snow capped mountains and seasons.  I am northern born (Detroit) and by the time I was 22 years old, I had had enough of SoCal to last a lifetime.  I've never seriously considered going back, but have to admit I do enjoy short (7 days or less) visits.

So if Eblem can/will make the map for me, all I have to do is find some oil rig platforms to plop out in the channel!  There were only 3-4 of them there back in 1965, I think there's about 20 of them now...

No, while I appreciate the offer, I am on a quest to create a single region of the SB area that is 40 miles square and being as how I am not yet able to figure out how to do that, it remains a challenge to overcome.  Eblem lacks the computing power to do this, which is why he created 4 regions for me 8 large city tiles square from my original request.  He was later able to "marry" those 4 regions to each other for me, as I was not able to figure out how to do it myself.

I'll keep trying.  Someday, after I am bald from tearing my hair out, I will figure out how to do what I want to do.  Until then, I will remain dependent on the mapping gurus to do for me what I would rather do for myself.

    Sorry for this delay replies:

    Lora, good to hear, thanks!

Bamafan: You said you wanted all small tiles cities, next time be careful and please detail how you want your map, by now you'll have to wait because i have some other request to take on...

CyprusTM: A week ago (almost a day after you posted) I spent like two hours figuring out how to do the map of rumania, unfortunalety the area youre requesting its sooo huge, even I can't scale it down due the data incompatiblities between the downloaded datas, I mean i use to take those data and mix em together so i can scale it down, but not sure why the data came different than I suspected. Im sorry for not being able to help you this time, but if you need another map maybe of the capital or somewhere i can do, but remeber to cover an area less than 200 square km's

Malachite: Sorry for the delay, i'll start working on your request (working on it...R1)

ac94: I'll see what i can do for your request, hope i doesn't exceeds a limit (working on it...R2)

Lora, it would be best if you can send me just the data files you chosen, so i can give it to you back by a sc4m file, make sure to re-download the data, but this time when you download please cover an area abit more bigger than that you did, I mean this will work when I do the SC4 scaling down for the map. Don't worry its a pleasure to help you. (R3)

rusummer1: Sorry please give more details of your map... i'll take the request after that, and the another 3 request I already got... (pending request)

Request closed! open until a new advise 2.gif

I am going to withdraw my request for the time being.  I may make it again at some other time in the future, who knows?  But I have started working on the first region you sent me (Copper River) and think this is going to keep me very busy for a very long time.

I got kinda carried away with Santa Barbara during the big fire there, and at the same time I was at a bit of what I thought was a dead end with Copper River.  Turns out the dead end with Copper River was in my head only...and once I realized that and started working on it, I was fine.

So, false alarm, you can take me off your list (for now!).

    Hey Eblem!

It's me again, with a new request.  While in Santa Barbara at the end of last month for my nephew's wedding, I started playing the San Francisco region that came with the game but the issue of accurate scale once again started getting to me.  The game provided region seems smaller than SF really is.  This has got to be a popular area for city builders worldwide, so I am imagining someone has probably already created scale accurate maps, I just haven't yet been able to find them, even though I have looked both here and over at SC4D.

By now you know I'm hung up on the mega region concept, so even existing SF maps may not work for me.  I know you're busy and have closed requests for the time being, just putting myself into the line up for when you have time again.

When you're ready, I would like a 40 mile x 40 mile map, 256 large city tiles, 16 large tiles x 16 large tiles.  I'd like the City of San Francisco centered in the region in the North/South axis, and then as much of the Bay Area to the east as you can manage to fit in while still including enough of the Pacific Ocean as to allow ocean going vessels (and whales!) to travel along the west coast of the region.  I'll see if I can grab a Google Earth picture at near scale.

    66461582.jpg

The red line is the scale, represents approximately 20 miles.

And, now that I can see the scale of the RL area, yes the game map I am currently using is badly out of scale.

Lora: No problem i got some time now, i'll see what i can do for yout request, expect your request in a hour or so if everything goes fine, thanks  edit: still working on the map for making it better and better, please give me some time, tomorrow ill continue working on it, expect it by mid-day or late. thanks!

    Eblem-

Knowing you were busy and unlikely to get to my request anytime soon, I did my own experiment last night and tried to enlarge the existing Maxis San Francisco region map...not with good results!  I used TF to save a region RGB map, then used Photoshop to enlarge the map from the number of pixels it was to 4096, then created a new config map for the large region, then loaded it into the game.  Disaster!  I dumped the region immediately.  I really need to learn more about mapping.

Then I went to the USGS site with the idea that I would try to create my own scale accurate region from scratch.  I was able to instruct the website to get the maps I wanted, but my wifi connection is so slow I could see it was going to take me more than the 1 hour timeout time, so I canceled the downloads, thinking I'd try again later when maybe my download speed might be better.

Anyway, take your time, good buddy, I'm in no rush.  I am ignoring the gorgeous maps you made for me a few months ago in favor of this new project and all 2 fans of my CJ are probably unhappy with me because of it.  I will get back to Copper RIver, have no worries, just feel a want/need to actually build right now and not spend hundreds of hours terraforming.  Copper River is a huge project and while take years to complete, so I feel OK with letting it sit idle from time to time while I veer off into other projects.

And thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.  Some day you map folks are going to have to take me under your wing and teach me the ropes because as much as I love building and terraforming, I would love map making too, if I could even figure out how to do it!

Ok, Lora, let me tell first, this is one of the best map i have ever done... here the total overview of the area, i could make it bigger than I tought (my computer could handle it)...

Request N° 9 San Francisco Area map requested by Idvger

Map size: 10x13 SC4 large tiles

    Type of config tiles: Large

General Location: San Francisco, California, United States

    Author notes:

The terrain is 1:1 (accurate), this map is most possible accurate to the real one, canals, rivers, lakes are most possible previewed, i've used a 15m data which is best map detail possible.

If youre going to try to recreate the city area, its possible to do the Golden Gate bridge in one city tile, at upper side, but unfortunately will not be possible to recreate the bridge to Oakland (dont know the name of the bridge) due its angle and the lenght it has... which you can see clearly in this pic...

    Eblem-

Looks excellent, my friend, just excellent!  I have downloaded the file but have not yet installed it into the game or tried to render it, need to make sure of a couple or things first.

Unlike the Copper River (which you made in 4 maps and took a while for us to marry into one), this appears to be one single region that I can just pop right into a new region folder, is that correct?  I'm going to try that now and if it doesn't work for any reason, I'll come back and ask for further instructions.

As for the Oakland Bay Bridge...I'll cheat.  I was able to create it in the game SF region by extending Treasure Island (the island in the middle of the bay between SF and Oakland), so if I have to do the same here, that's OK.  There is another big long bridge to the south, the San Mateo Bridge and it is also angled, so I'll cheat when I get there, too.

I'm glad you had fun making this map and also glad you feel it is your best so far.  You told me that about my Copper River map and it is gorgeous, so I can't wait to get this new map up and running.  You seem to really try hard to make great maps and I'm sure everyone who you make a map for appreciates your efforts.  I know I do!

    Thanks again, amigo, great work!

I'd like a map of my city, if possible.

Keep the scale the same, cover the entire area. Large city tiles.

Kelowna, BC Canada is the location.

Here's a link to the exact google earth location.

Here is what it roughly looks like on the right side of the lake:

This far zoom does not give credit to the detail this map presesnts,  The snow is not realistic, but I have the Columbia low snow mod installed, which I plan to uninstall.

Regardless, this is an unbelievable map and I hope you share it with anyone who wants to try it!

    Heblem,

First of all may I say, Your maps are TOP Quality ! Big Thumbs Up mate !

Can you please create a map of South East Queenslands Capital city, Brisbane. Australia.

    brisbanequeenslandaustr.jpg

This image I belive is 35x35 Klms, I would like the map to be done in a scale of 1:1 using a large grid for the CBD so I can accomodate the the many bride links. And a large grid for the airport and seaport, and medium grids to the perimetre as you see fit. The more large grids the better !

    ]aerial.jpg

There is an elevated freeway running the entire length of western side of the city over the river, can you please accomodate this in the map as it will need land to build on .... but then maybe water surface to look as if its on the river ?

    brisbaneriversideexpres.jpg

Also, I am hoping to recreate the transport system of the local area as much as realistly posible. Including freeways, airports, railways & seaports.

    brosbaneairportandseapo.jpg

    Thanks in advance,

    ArcticSamuRai

    Late Edit ....... Sorry !

Kangaroo Point cliffs are an Icon of the Brisbane River.

Can I request some attention to detail in this area ?

Hi, Could you do the Lowell-Nashua Metro of Massachusetss and New Hampshire  in 1:1 scale. Its the entire area i have in the following pics. Since the Majority is avobe sea-level can i lower the entire areas elevation slightly and dig the rivers and ponds in? I would also like it realistically scaled in large grids for the cities, Lowell, Nashua, Lawrence and Haverhill, and a mixture of mostly medium tiles for the rest and small tiles where medium is not possible.      Please and thank you. EDIT: Sorry about not replying to my other request I forgot I requested it and just saw it today, thank you very much.
