Notice A: 64bit OS users: Currently SC4 Organizer, SC4 Download & Installation Catalog (DIC), and SC4 Watcher are aimed at 32bit operating systems only. They do require full administrative rights and Vista's 64bit security may render them inoperable.

Notice B - January 3rd, 2010: Please be aware that the SC4 Tools site is undergoing a transition to a new host. Announcements to when this will become effective  will be found at the end of this thread (click Last Unread).

Those who have traversed the SC4 fan sites may have already come across this set of tools; for those who have not, I'd like to introduce them here (hoping this is the right forum for this topic):

The SC4 Organizer Tools

The largest of these, the SC4 Organizer is primarily aimed at those players with large plug-ins folders, and users who regularily DAT-pack these. It includes some of the separately released tools, such as the Region & City Viewer and the MD/CJ Offline Editor. It also features a full-fledged Backup Manager, and a Download & Install Organizer. Also among thos tools is SC4 Watcher, and in-game backup utility.

The Download & Installation Manager is especially useful when you need to keep track of what you install: it handles both executables (such as the BSC Installers) as well as manual installations. It automatically organizes read-me files into an apart library and keeps tabs on installation.

SC4O keeps your game folders pristine, lets you view your cities and regions even when you're not playing; works hand-in-hand with the Region Census tool, and enables you to create MD's/CJ's offline (with full preview).

The entire toolset is now available from the STEX, the SC4 Central site, or directly from one of our SC4 Tools sites

Hello, Doc.

I must say your SC4O is going to be a welcome addition to the arsenal of SC4 tools.  Thank you for all of the time and effort you've put into writing them and making them avaiable to the SC4 community.

As for getting the uploaded to the Modds section, that is something only the Webmaster can do.  I would suggest PMing an SC4 Administrator about getting this done.

Good luck to you and thanks again for this great set of tools!

Regards,

Gary (Vandy)

    Thanks, Gary. I just hope that I get a bit more feedback from the ST site, because thus far it has been like working in the dark.

    Please be aware that SC4O has still a few bugs. It thus is a good idea to download the manual, as well as sending me the log file as soon as an error occurs.

    DocRorlach

    Important Caveat: I've noticed several folks downloaded the Update. Please note that the update is only any  use to those who previously installed the FULL version of SC4O - 1.3 or later.

    2nd Edit:

    Just as I posted this topic, I discovered a minor error in version 1.3.3.0, which has now been fixed in version 1.3.3.1 (December 1st, 2008, 19:50h GMT+1)

    Important (interim) Notice: The SC4 Organizer Website just went down. Until I manage to fix this, please use this temporary link - or use the download section at SimCity Central to get the tools. I hope to fix the problem within the next few hours.

    As someone who has been using this (and other tools from Doc) , once you get past the small learning  curve and configurations , it works quite well!

    working2.jpgGot to thank everyone here for the confidence they have shown in my small attempts to make the game a bit more managable.

    And it has been "raining" downloads - quite a lot of folks have started to use the organizer and other tools.

    Thus my plea: I need feedback to further develop this stuff. Either in this forum, or via PM, or via email. I tend to reply within a few hours (email being the fastest method). If you encounter errors, bugs, or simply want to add or change a feature, let me know.

    And don't forget to include the log file: you find it in the SC4 Stuff folder, called "dep_seek_??????.log. Additionally there is an installation log file and - in case of setup errors - a status log file in theSC4 Organizer's application folder.

    One hint for first time users: do install it in the default application folder - not in the SC4 Game folder, that can lead to unexpected behaviour.

    The SC4 Download & Installation Catalogue..

    dm_teaser_001.jpg

    Already partially implemented in the SC4 Organizer , the new Download Manager will help the user to bring order into the SimCity 4 custom content downloads. Re-written from scratch as a stand-alone utility, the DM not only handles the installation procedures, such as batch-installing multiple downloads, but also the total organization:

    dm_teaser_002.jpg

    • Import downloads from different folders or drives;
    • Find out if a downloaded custom content has been installed & where;
    • rack installation history;
    • Automatically organize read-me files and images into the Read-Me Library;
    • Keep the Plug-ins Folders clean by preventing non-essential files from being installed;
    • Preview read-me documentation & images;
    • The DM, of course, works in sync with the other SC4 tools.

    Estimated release date: January 5th, 2009

    I hadn't realised this is still in development, it was a nice surprise.

    I downloaded the SC4O, and wow it has come far since I last used it.

    But I noticed a few things, in the downloads when you unzip an archive it doesn't create a subfolder with the same name of the archive.

    So if I unzipped an archive called NAM_test.zip to the plugins folder it would put the files in the archive directly in .../plugins/ rather than .../plugins/NAM_test I expected, having this option would be great (instead of having to make a new folder each time)

    Also in the main view if you try to delete a folder it will not confirm it has and upon refresh the folder is still there (as well as looking in explorer)

    And one other thing, in the plugins-compressed manager, when you check a folder that is compressed and click the "Move in" under "Original folders" it will give the message checking if you want to move "the 1 selected folders" click yes and an open file dialog appears asking you to select the folder you checked.

    Also if a switch feature for only the selected packed dats could be made(so you check a packed dat and click switch and it takes out the dat and puts in the orignal folder) unless I have missed that.

    Other than those few problems great improvment over the last version I used and well done on continuing!

    Jonathan

    Other than that

    The SC4 Download & Installation Catalogue..

    Splash Screen

    Already partially implemented in the SC4 Organizer, the new Download Catalogue was created to help users to bring order into the SimCity 4 custom content downloads. Re-written from scratch as a stand-alone utility, the DIC not only handles the installation procedures, such as batch-installing multiple downloads, but also the total organization:

    • Import downloads from different folders or drives;
    • Find out if a downloaded custom content has been installed;
    • Track installation history;
    • Automatically organize read-me files and images into a searchable Read-Me Library;
    • Keep the Plug-ins Folders clean by preventing non-essential files from being installed;
    • Preview read-me documentation & images;
    • Specialized browser to search & download missing content;
    • Built-in Dependency Search functions;

    The DM, of course, works in sync with the other SC4 tools.

    Please note that the DIC surpasses the SC4 Organizer's Download & Install functionality. We xpect to update the SC4 Organizer within a month with the new fuctionality.

    Some Notes on Installing DIC:

    dic_preferences_small.jpg

    • If you already have SC4 Organizer installed, the DIC will not require any setup other than the standard installtion procedure. Both tools do work in conjunctionm if both are present and in use.
    • If this is your first SC4 Tool, then the DIC will set up the minimum required folders and prompt the user to confirm the setup. During the beta phase we strongly recommend accepting the prompted defaults.
    • The Dependency Search functions will, if found, make use of the BSC Cleanitol folder and files; their location can be provided during the initial set-up.
    • After the installation we recommend a first run to establish the folder structure & defaults. It would be advisable to then use the Add Folder.. or Add File.. functions to add some downloaded ZIP archives to the DIC Download folder, so that the DIC has some files to work with.
    • Please read the provided handbook carefully before using the DIC.

    A few screenshots of the DIC:

    Brief Overview..

    dic_manager_main.jpg

    Built-in browser overview..

    Dependency Finder..

    Current release: Beta 1.0.5 - for testing purposes only. A DIC Handbook (draft) has been provided.

    N.B.: When reporting errors, please use the Mail Logbook function on the Logbook Viewer - this way the logfile is automatically included in the email.

    Update:

    SC4 Organizer has a new update out: it appears XP handles LastAccess & LastWrite to foldes different from Vista. I thus corrected the Organizer to use XP's method when checking if folders need to be repacked (Swap Menu).

    For those who already have version 1.3.0 or newer, all they need to do is to download the SC4 Organizer Update (contains the EXE plus reports plus help files) and unzip it to the eu-contractor folder under Program Files. For all others Version 1.3.8 is available in full on the SC4 Tools site.

    The DIC will receive its first update in a couple of days.

    ..and another update..

    ..this time for the Download & Installation Catalogue (DIC):

    Release History
    Version 1.0.7, Wednesday, January 28, 2009:

    • Download Manager – an error in the third party ZIP module could lead to certain types of ZIP archives being read wrongly; notably Pegasus ZIP files, and some BSC files exhibited that problem (not their fault) because of slightly different packing types; fixed with this update.
    • Download Manager – all list items were left unchecked, regardless of their state and/or location; fixed.
    • Summary Report – the icons for NAM and SWAP were, ironically, swapped; fixed.

    And to all those who have already downloaded the first release: you only need to download the DIC_Update.zip - extract it directly into the application's folder, overwriting anything found there. It will fix a stupid ZIP error caused bt an external ZIP DLL.

    Still have not received any error or bug reports..but here's to hoping..

    Hi, I've come across this error message from NET Framework when trying to start DIC

    After installation it worked fine first time and then when I try to start it again all I get are error messages

    I installed SC4 organiser yesterday, and this installed NET2, DIC installed NET3.5 today - is this correct?

    I used the link above to install and the update just in case

    See the end of this message for details on invoking

    just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

    ************** JIT Debugging **************

    To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

    application or computer (machine.config) must have the

    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.

    The application must also be compiled with debugging

    enabled.

    For example:

    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception

    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer

    rather than be handled by this dialog box.

    d_j_p1: Can you email me both the logfiles from SC4 Organizer & DIC? The application log are in the SC4 Stuff folder, and the installation logs are in the application's installation folder (same  for both). Also, please let me know your OS details (type, version, 32/64bit?).

    SC4O was originally started with .NET 2.0 because at the time 3.5 was still in beta; DIC started more recently, thus is based on .NET 3.5. Both should be forward compatible and having the higher version should not impede SC4O in any way. It is however possible that installing SC4O after installing DIC could upset the apple cart because of registry conflicts - that would be my fault. Try the following please: uninstall both. Download the SC4O-Reset tool from the sie and run it once (it cleans out the registry for SC4 Organizer only). The install first SC4 Organizer, then DIC - When I do that here I can even run both concurrently without problems (XP-SP2).

    My email address is both on-site as well as in he documentation.

    Thaks for the bug report.

    The problem is that the SC4 Tools website sits on a host with bandwith quotas - and it shuts down the pages whence that quota is exceeded. And the past few days saw a huge rise in downloads. The DL's are too large to fit he STEX, and all efforts to contact someone here who can add them to the mod section have thus far failed.

    Simply retry after 24h; I'll hope to lick this problem soon..

    sklis, Skidoorider: The bandwidth problem I had recently has been solved - no more quotas and thus all downloads are now available 24/7;

    saxie: I've recompiled the Organizer (and DIC) to now target any CPU; this should, in theory, include 64bit instruction sets;

    d_j_p_1: In the past the SC4 Organizer was based on .NET 2.0, while DIC was compiled with .NET 3.5. This may - I cannot be certain - account for certain types of problems involving Windows forms. I've updated SC4 Organizer with .NET 3.5 compatibility.

    Everyone: The above two statements mean that, for now, the usual small updates are no longer available. In order to update existing installations the previous download must be uninstalled first. Then, when reinstalling, select not to install the database. Since the uninstall does not touch the registry, all previous defaults and preferences will be retained.

    That said, I recommend that prior to uninstalling either SC4 Organizer or DIC, you should make a copy of the current databases found in the application folder - better safe than sorry..
