    SC4 Tools on 64bit Machines:

    Recent problem reports sugest that my compiler did not, in the past, cover 64bit PC's with 64bit OS' installed. I am trying to rectify this, one tool at the time. For this reason I've compiled a special version of the SC4 Organizer for 64bit systems, which can be downloaded from the SC4 Tools site here.

    It would really be helpful if some more folks reported back their experiences - 64bit or not - especially with the Organizer and the DIC,

    DIC Updates:

    Version 1.0.9, Thursday, February 05, 2009:

    • Duplicate Plug-ins – all functions (delete permanently, archive & delete, move to folder) are now activate; additionally the panel has been enlarged for better viewing, and will warn if the total path and file name length approaches critical size; search folder now defaults to the user’s plug-ins folder;

    First version of Searching for duplicate plug-ins..

    • Download Manager – fixed folder tree refresh (for manual installations); will no longer duplicate entire plug-ins folder;
    • Download Manager – If, after an executable installation, the path & file name length exceeds 256 characters a warning is displayed; manual installations will not proceed if that limit is passed;

    Doc, Thanks for your help solving some issues with the download manager.

    I thought I would post some of them here in case other people are having similar problems

    1st make sure you download the latest version that is on Doc's site - link is in his signature.

    THis solved most of my start up problems and error messages

    2nd I've been having problems with firefox3 (IE works fine) - it won't download files to the folder I tell it to.

    The following has solved this - Make sure Zip files are "save as"

    ffoptions2cw5.jpg

    Then choose the "downloads" file in SC4 stuff

    ffoptions1ls3.jpg

    After sorting the downloading issues the program is very easy to use - All the new plugins that you download are detected by the download manager and you can then decide where you want it to install them to

    EXE files take care of themselves using the installer, manual downloads can be put in the plugins file in any sub folder you select

    The duplicates option is very handy to find items that you have installed more then once.

    Download manager and SC4O work very well with cleanitol and Datapacker - It makes the process of packing and re-packing very straight forward - Swaping packed and unpacked folders at the click of a button

    If you have encountered any problems please email DocRorlach, he has been very helpfull with the problems I had - If you don't tell him whats broke he cant fix it2.gif

    Thanks, Dave , for the thoroughness you applied to testing the DIC. It definitely helped identifying some of the issues. I sure could use more test reports from everyone.

    And it isn't just the testing: I've developed these tools based on my own approach: that is inherently flawed. I am open to suggestions, especially the Organizer could do with an overhaul - it's almost a year old now..

    mail_banner.jpg

    A quick guide to dealing with duplicates, using the DIC..

    Eradicating duplicates cannot be done automatically - at least, I dare not! But the DIC will go some ways to make it easier. It is NOT fool-proof (there are, after all, some very clever fools out there). It tries to list the dupes in the correct order; i.e.; based on the file name, even if the folder path is different, it will list them in pairs - most of the time.

    Clicking on a listed item the first time will show the details of the file (date, size, location) in the text box on the bottom right of the panel. It requires a second click, on the check box, to select it. You can compare this to the item below it, to see if they are identical or not.

    Going through the list that way requires a bit of patience if - like I found out to my distress - you have a lot of duplicates. Unfortunately not everybody ensures that their updates will end up in the same folder. Moreover, different approaches towards plug-ins organization, tend to leave dupes littering the cutting room floor.

    You then have three options: Delete, Archive & Delete, or Move :

    What you can do with duplicates..

    • Delete - this is permanent, ther's no undo, no opps mode!
    • Archive & Delete - the recommended option. It creates a ZIP file with all the selected items in the SC4 Stuff\Backups folder, named, for example, dupes_200902071832.zip, using date and time as a visible identifier, down to the minute. If a ZIP file already exists, you are asked to wait a minute - no duplicate archive is overwritten. After ZIPing things up, dupes are permanently deleted - unless you happen to have that very file selected in your Explorer at that time. This is a Windows odditiy I cannot prevent. DIC won't crash, but will send an error message to the DIC logbook.
    • Move - This allows a user to select any folder on his/her PC and send the duplicate plug-ins there.

    Using either of the last two a user can experiment; i.e., run the game and see if everything works before removing he duplicates (ore dupe archives) permanently. Obviously, removing unnecessary files always improves game speed.

    I am working on an option to manage dupe archives (removing, restoring, that sort of thing). Should be available shortly.

    As always: let me know the bugs & I'll try to fix it a.s.a.p..

    The DIC received one major and a few minor updates (Version 1.0.11, Tuesday, February 10, 2009):

    Duplicate Plug-ins:

    • added a Duplicate Archive Manager; users can now delete, move, or restore archived duplicates - either the entire contents of an archive, or a single file in the archive;

    Dealing with archived duplicates..

    Download Manager:

    • fixed deletion of ZIP temp folder;
    • fixed read-me problem: read-me’s & images will now be displayed, even in sub-folders;
    • pictograms above the download list are now clickable, functioning like the context menu (right-click);

    New users will need to get the full installation, available here, current users who have at least version 1.0.08 installed can use the provided update download (everything in it goes to the DIC's application folder.

    Another DIC update - this one is rather important:

    Version 1.1.0, Sunday, February 15, 2009 :

    • Catalogue System – fixed minor bugs & added some cosmetic changes;
    • Duplicate Plug-ins – added Duplicate Archive Manager; users can now delete, move, or restore archived duplicates;
    • Duplicate Plug-ins – changed the duplicate display to a) list dupes alphabetically; and b), include all file details in the listing;

    Final version of Duplicate Plug-ins Finder

    How long the DIC takes to locate duplicates depends on the size of the plug-ins folder: in the example above, 14,000++ files took 26minutes to search through. The less duplicates found, the faster it goes.

    • Download Manager – fixed deletion of ZIP temp folder; pictograms above the download list are now clickable, functioning like the context menu (right-click);
    • Download Manager – fixed read-me problem: read-me’s & images will now be displayed, even in sub-folders, provided the ZIP archive contains no errors;
    • Executable Installations – in most cases, the path used by an executable installation is now captured. Since this only works if any Read-Me pop-up is closed first, before exiting the installation, the dialog box asking users to copy the installation path remains active.

    • Download Manager
      • Download Manager – Since someone had the "bright " idea to include multiple Install EXE's into a single download, these types are displayed, but not available for installations - for now.

      New users will need to get the full installation, available here, current users who have at least version 1.0.08 installed can use the provided update download (everything in it goes to the DIC's application folder).

    Yet another DIC update..

    Version 1.1.2, Tuesday, February 17, 2009 :

    Database Duplicates – searching for duplicates in the database now works; duplicates can be removed from the database;;

    Search Online – this option has been moved to the main catalogue menu (formerly found under Options);

    Search Online – users can now search the STEX via keyword input; also, double-clicking on an item listed in the MIA list will activate the STEX search;

    Search Online – users can now type URL’s directly into the history bar and, by clicking the adjacent button, go directly to that URL;

    Finding duplicates in the database..

    About the database duplicates: all this does is to scan the DB entries for duplicate file names: if the folder location is also identical, it is considered a duplicate. Clicking on either list will bring up the corresponding item in the opposite list, and display the file dates. Duplicates can only be removed from the original listing on the left, and all that is done is that the database is purged of the duplicate entry: it does not delete any actual files.

    Searching the STEX: this inclusion is the result of SWAT-MEDIC's recent post about the search syntax for the STEX; ergo, it only works for Simtropolis. The ST submenu therefore has now a search option. It also works for any items listed as "missing-in-action" in the MIA List on the bottom left of the browser panel. Double-clicking missing DL will try and find it on the STEX.

    This pretty much concludes the fixing of DIC, unless I get bug reports or wishlists from its users - here seem to be quite a few out there, judging from the download count.

    Doc...Thanks for the utility. For months I have been searching for a utility to clean up and organize my plugins folder. My problem was with dependancies and remembering if I had downloaded all the files for a BAT to work correctly. So Thank you. I am having a problem with installation of the SC4 Organizer. I am running Vista 64bit and I just downloaded the utilities today so they are your current releases.

    The install goes fine and when the app tries to run for the first time I get this error message:

    See the end of this message for details on invoking

    just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

    Judging from the error message, the application was run in "user mode" - as opposed to "administrator mode"; or the dreaded Vista User Control is still switched on. The file it is trying to access is a plain text file within the application's installation folder. You can try and run the Organizer by right-clicking on it and selecting "Run as Administrator" to see if that solves the problem.

    The other thing I notice is that none of the fields have any values which appears to me a permission problem. The Organizer requires administrative access to the c:\windows\users\<your username> folder because it needs to read certain values from it. The same goes for the Program Files access.

    Finally, I am beginning to think that none of the SC4 Tools is going to run under 64bit Vista. Microsoft's implementation of "32bit legacy" - i.e., preceding folder names with "(x86)" and thus using formerly illegal characters in foldernames - will prevent them from executing a number of functions.

    To get an idea about how SC4 Organizer uses folders within the "My Documents/Documents" Structure:

    organizer_folders01.jpg

    organizer_folders02.jpg

    That said I am looking for someone who does indeed run 64bit Vista and who has VS 2008 fully installed. I could then provide the source code project for recompilation under 64bit. That might solve the problem. Anyone interested in a few hours of hacking can simply pm

    or email me.

    DocRorlach

    Edit: I've provided a trial version of the SC4 Organizer, recompiled with the latest version of .NET 3.5, and aimed at AMD & Intel x64 CPU's. I am not sure if this solves the problem but I hope so. The version is available from my usual download pages.

    Hi Doc ... I installed the DIC 1.1.2 version last weekend since I came to use quite a lot of mods, addons, and so on. I left unchanged the suggested directories,and bevore first startup I copied all of my downloads to the SC4Stuff\downloads folder (as suggested by you in the manual). After starting the DIC for the first time, I first made a rescan of the download folder and DIC found 115 downloads. Since I had most of them installed already, I started the "find installations" function to update the DIC database. Unfortunately, this found just about 30 or so installed downloads, the remaining files where considered as "not installed". Using the "find installation" function for a specific download file, I located the corresponding file in the sc4/plugins folder (by looking for the correct filename in the win explorer and providing this filename in the "find installation" popup. After updating some of the entries of the "not installed" list of the DIC (which afterwards showed up as "installed"), I decided to pause and get back to that later on (obviously to start playing sc4 ;-))

    The next day, when I tried to start the DIC, after double-clicking the "DI Catalogue" icon I got a message box telling me "The default directories (downloads, backup, ..) will be created. Shall we go on with that?" (What for - they have been created already?) After confirming this message box, nothing happened (except for the message box, which disappeared). I unsinstalled the DIC and reinstalled it, but with the same result.

    I'm using winxp, will provide log files as soon as I'm back home (at work right now ..)

    cheers

    Rady;

    Find all installations will always work haphazardly since it cannot look into install EXE's. For those it does not find, the best method is to click on the left list item, then use the square find install button on the bottom (rather than the Find Installation button - I'll change this shortly), and then playing with the wildcards & provided filename.

    The second problem is rather odd: I suspect it is a permission (rights) issue vis-a-vis the registry. To check, use Start Menu - Run -regedit. The expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, find SOFTWARE and scan down until you find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings. Below that is DL Catalogue - Defaults. Check the values in there: you should have at least:

    SC4 Log Folder

    SC4 Backup Folder

    SC4 System Plugin Folder

    SC4 Install Folder

    Temp Folder

    User Plugin Folder

    Database

    Default User

    Default Userpath

    First Run

    and each of them should have the correct value nex to them.

    If you cannot access the register or if there are no entries for DIC then your access rights are not those of an administrator. Please attach the log file (found in the My Documents\SC4 Stuff and Program Files\eu-contractor folders) to your reply (as a ZIP).

    Thanks,

    Doc,

    thx for your immediate response - unfortunately it will take me some days to provide you the log files (playing sc4 unfortunately is interupted by beeing off to work ;-) ))

    As for the "find installation" feature - sure, that was what I was thinking, and already started with. No problem on this side.

    Anyway, you provided a much needed and useful software for keeping an eye on the sc4 stuff.

    I will get back to you with the results to your suggestions asap.

    Doc,

    again un- and reinstalled the DIC and then checked the registry. The values you mentioned were all existent except for the

    SC4 System Plugin Folder

    SC4 Install Folder

    I manually created these values.

    However, I cannot start DL Catalogue - still the same message.

    As for admin rights - yes, my user is admin user.

    The only log file I found is the catalog_sys_200902.log, but nothing in the \Programs\eu-contractor directory.

    Might there be a problem because during installation I chose "install for this user only" instead of  "every user of this computer"?

    Sorry, for some reason Simtropolis allow neither to upload the registry export nor the log file?

    Will try using your SC4 tools hompage.

    Oh - obviously there i no contact information on that page .. fine - using .zip format worked out fine.

    cheers,

    Rady; see my PM (switching to Deutsch - would not be fair to most users here)

    Just a quick one: Expected is /My Documents (in any language) , then /Maxis/SimCity 4 - in your case Maxis was somehow left out when SC4 was installed. I'll change the initial setup to reflect such possiblities. What is odd is that "SC4 System Plugin Folder" was not correctly identified. I can only assume that it is the language difference. I will look into immediately.

    Rady: Found the error - it only happens if SC4 Organizer has not been installed first; because of that the Options were wrong, too. Fixed in Version 1.1.3

    Yet another DIC update..

    Version 1.1.3, Tuesday, February 24, 2009:
     > System  – fixed error of registry reading during first run if SC4 Organizer is not installed;
     > Options – fixed options panel error if SC4 Organizer is not installed;

    My apologies for that. User with version after 1.0.8 can simply unpack the update into the eu-contractor folder. Everyone else, please install the full version, as always availaible from the main site.

    SC4 Organizer Update..

    Alpha Release 2: Build 1.4.03 - Wednesday, February 25, 2009 :

    • Start-up: –removed application calls that may have caused exception reports, especially under 64bit OS, during application start;
    • Main View: –changed the way statistics were collected;
    • Update Databases: – added a progress bar so users can see what is done to the database;
    • Cleanup Plugins: – removed duplicate call to the folder rescan; this had caused the folders to be scanned twice after each move or delete action;
    • General: several cosmetic changes, incl. status icons; added a status icon for 32 or 64bit OS:

    status_icons2.jpg

    The icons mean:

    1: You need to DAT-pack again..

    2: All - clear - let's play..

    3: Game data appears out of synch..

    4: OS 32bit (or) OS64bit

    5: New downloads found..

    6: Database needs updating

    WOW! I'm 're'-new to SC and this has been so extensively supported and seems to be a must have download that I'm gonna try it Doc.  You've put in a lot of time with this I see.

    Looks like a lot of reading. Hope the wife and kids will leave me alone for a few hours tonight.

    Doc, (is that what you like being called here?)

    Have you thought of a plugin for FF (and IE) that will detect if you on an SC4 site, and then when you click to download something it downloads automatically to the SC$Stuff folder. And if it isnt an SC4 site, then it uses the normal download process (even if you using an accelerator like DAP)?

    I know there are plugins which will let you where to put downloads according to their site, but I have yet to see one that can download according to site, and if its not listed site then create a folder of the current date(which is my current setup)

    As for the plug-in: I doubt I would have the ability. I tried that with the DIC built-in browser, but it simply reverts back to whatever was last used in an ordinary IE session. As for FF, I don't even contemplate that; I know a lot of folks swear by it, but I find even the latest version highly unusable - typical case of wanting to be everyhing to everybody.

    But I will look into it some more,,am still hoping to link the DIC directly to various sites..

    OK Doc. First problem. DIC: I try to install and I get the message that says creating needed folders. It never creates them so the program never fires up. I followed the path where it was trying to put them and created my own. Still wants to create it's own folders and still a no go.

    XP did ask me if I wanted to unblock my firewall. I did.  Sup?

    Dion, I fear you downloaded the DIC just before I had a chance to fix that very bug. Download the update here, and extract it into the eu-contractor folder. That should fix it.

    Re: Firewall: I have no idea; there is an IE7 clone built-into the DIC but it only has the familiar SC$ fan sites as ready menu items - I see no reason why it should even bother with the XP Firewall - it's outgoping traffic, not incoming.

    Gotcha Doc. Maybe that will take care of all the error messages I've been getting with the Orgainzer also. Tells me I'm missing folders also.

    Eh, no, it won't - in your case something else must be wrong; DIC will simply follow the Organizer if it detects it. In fact the bug only happens if Organizer is not installed. The order is always: Organizer first, DIC second.

    Take a look at the folder diagram I posted a few days ago (middle of this page). I know it's a bit much to ask folks to think like me, but for now that's the folders the Organizer expects and will create if it does not find them.

    One way to check if things worked, is to open REGEDIT and look for the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\eu-contractor - DepSeek is the odd name I used for the Organier (don't ask); and DL Catalogue is right below it. Their respective values are in the "Defaults" folders and should be largely identical.

    If in doubt, export the key, ZIP it up together with any and all log files you have (look into the SC4 Stuff folder) and email them to me (address is in my profile - without the REMOVE), or attached it to a reply.

    Well alrighty then. Uninstalling, cleaning registry and we'll try again. I just download DIC version 1.1.4. Still says beta release but if you say so.....

    Thanks. I'll report back.

    Your problem remains odd: surely "'C:\Documents and Settings\Dion\My Documents\SC4 Stuff\Downloads'" exists? I really need to see your registry entry for the Organizer.

    I had a mess of a time figuring out which version to install, the trial or the other one seeing that I run on Vista 64 bit and installed one or the other and then ran it and did the configuration and I guess it created a database.

    I then removed the program thinking I better make sure that Im running the 64 bit trial version.

    I don't see how to make it create a new database, by uninstalling it I would think that it removes the database too and would then prompt me to create a new configuration and database when I reinstall it, but that doesn't happen.  I notice also a menu item of "update database" but it's grayed out so not of any use at the moment I guess.

    However now that it's installed, every time that I load up the Organize program it gives me the error message in the screenshot, and this is the contents of it:

    See the end of this message for details on invoking
    just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

    City Planner: the trial version is the correct version. Because I am as of yet unsure about 64bit systems altogether, I called it "trial". I cannot guarantee that works at all, although some folks have told me that they managed to get it to work fine.

    As for the error messages - and this for everyone reporting a bug - I only ever need the Exception Text. But I do need any and all logs the Organizer produces: the one called "depseek_<date>.log found in the SC4 Stuff folder, and - if they exists - the installation logs found in the application eu-Contractor folder.

    City Planner: at which point does the error occurs? Are there any Windows forms displayed yet? Or did you not get past the splash screen? You might also want to take a log at the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\eu-contractor\DEPSeek\Defaults) - see the images I include below.
