Hi all.

After some efforts and walking through some of the great cities here I decided to make my home town. This is the begining of my city journal of Amsterdam. Now you should all know that this is my 3rd attemp at a good city. I want to start with a small intro to Amsterdam

537pxwapenamsterdamsvg2gc9.png

City Journal of Amsterdam

After a lot of travel you have landed in Amsterdam. Famous city of Holland. This city founded in 1300 and was before that known by it’s river “de Amstel” and the money needed to pay toll to cross the river and to import goods. As early as 1100 the city did not even come above the water level and was only known for some small communities in what is now known as “Ouderkerk aan de Amstel”.>3.gif>

The City really started when in 1275 Floris V and the group known as “de Heren van Amstel” got some major privileges to import beer and haring. But after this initial period the people of Amsterdam were not happy and revolted against there rulers. >3.gif>

Around the 1300 the first “dijken” were built in the d’ammrak now simply known as “damrak”. Where now “de Dam” is the first fight against the water of what was then know as “de zuiderzee” began. Also the first church was built in that period.>3.gif>

Amsterdam has always been known for it’s free spirit. In the begin period the people already revolted against there rulers appointed by the bishop. Amsterdam was also known for it’s trade. One of the reasons why it grew faster then other cities in Holland was because of it’s trade with Hamburg and the river “de Amstel”. The inner city known for it’s “grachten” was known for it’s trade of wood, grain and all other sorts of products. The current center was already built in the 15th century and really grew hard from 1612 onward.

Due to wars between Holland and Spain and Spain and Portugal Amsterdam was forced to go look for trading goods itself at the beginning of the 1600. The worlds first officially public held company was formed VOC. It’s was founded on the bases of trade with the indies currently known as Indonesia. This was the beginning of the golden era for Amsterdam and Holland.

While other countries where at war and fighting over land Holland grew as worlds trade leader. And because Amsterdam was the largest city it became ‘the center of the world’. During this period trade with Holland went mainly through Amsterdam and it grew still faster.

    amsterdam1730xq2.jpg

In 1815 Holland officially became known as a monarchy and although the government was in the Hague Amsterdam remained the capital. In 1876 Amsterdam got it’s first direct link with the sea and the “noordzee kanaal” was dug out. In 1889 Amsterdam got it’s very first train station in the center. Now known as central station it was a major new type of building in Amsterdam and many more where to follow.

And so we land in 2008 and starting point of this city journal. From here I will try to make as much of a detailed journal of my model of Amsterdam, hope you will enjoy the ride.

We start our journey as every traveler does at the airport. Schiphol airport has 2 U shaped rings. The outer ring is the departure ring and is located on top of the inner ring where the arrivals are situated. Schiphol also has an underground train station where travelers arrive to catch there flight.

Amsterdam Schiphol is also home to the KLM. KLM or Royal Dutch Airlines has been one of the first airline companies. It’s been at Schiphol from 1914 when it opened.

great start so far. I've been to Shiphol twice and it really looks like this. maybe I can help you with telling you some links for KLM palnes. I suggest the ones by tabinohito (just props), found here:

    http://homepage2.nifty.com/tabinohito/newpage12.html

    Try the MD-11

As well there is a 747 with KLM cargo livery

For diagonal airplanes I can suggest these files:

http://homepage2.nifty.com/tabinohito/newpage2.html (just scroll down and you will find a zip-file)

As well I can suggest the B767 by Kumba, found over at SC4 devotion!

hope I could help you and to see more of this fascinating city soon!

Nice! Your Schipol looks amazing. It must have taken a fair bit of patience to get the cross-tile building right! I've only ever tried it with the end of a runway. I look forward to seeing how yo do the city centre, and how you tackle building around those odd angled (for SC4) canals.

Mooi zeg!

Great start! It's very rare to see an airport so large crossing city borders effectively. Very good work.

I have been working on 4 different areas of Schiphol. You can see in below googlemap where they are in the area. They are fire stations, fuel depot, parking lot and the Schiphol plaza. As you will see there are some workarounds to get things working for now. There is no fire training lot for airplanes yet and I had to use diagonal buildings in Schiphol plaza to make it fit the map. I expect there will be more while building Amsterdam.

Schiphol plaza is a real scrambled area with lots of  1 way roads and avenue’s.

    amsterdam18lh4.png

The airport fire stations. I couldn’t find any runway maintenance cars or buildings yet. This would have gone on the top right hand side. (Where are those yellow follow me cars did somebody miss them?) The graveyard plane represents the aircraft fire training area.
