"is" should be "are".quote>

Agreed, it is just that I changed the phrase I was building at the beginning and forgot to recheck it, it happens to me in any language, really 3.gif

Are you sure about that? It doesn't have to be that way. "Teach" would perhaps be a more usual way to do it, but he may have meant it the way he said it. Without having direct access to his mind, there's no way to be sure. As it stands, there's nothing wrong with it as he wrote it.quote>

I meant literacy as a right, instead as a thing to be taught, sorry for that 2.gif

Seems as though "Professor" Wells has had trouble on his spelling tests back in the 1st grade.

Personally, I had a breeze passing spelling tests. I don't think kids should be held back due to incorrect grammar, but they should recieve extra instruction to improve their spelling.

Professor Wells said that the apostrophe was an equal waste of time. “Instead of an apostrophe we could just leave it out (it’s could become its) or leave a space (so we’ll would become we ll). Have we really nothing better to do with our lives than fret about the apostrophe?quote>

Thats one more button on the keyboard obselete.

Professor Wells pointed towards the emerging technologies that are leading to a reevaluation of spelling, saying: “Text messaging, e-mail and internet chat rooms are showing us the way forward for English.” quote>

Perhaps I should wait for a Beta 2.0 version before I try it out...

For me, netspeak isn't so much the problem as improper spelling & context (especially in print or signage)...

Among my biggest pet peeves are the incorrect uses of your & you're and two, to, & too. Drives me crazy. Even worse are the out-of-context apostrophes. Some people just have to put an apostrophe on any word they pluralize.

Perhaps the most annoying part of it is that it's adults who are making these mistakes... We all learned to avoid this kind of stuff in school. I see so many examples of these errors in print these days that it drives me crazy. Nothing like going to a nice restaraunt & looking at its menu that reads: "Appetizer's, Salad's, Entree's, & Dessert's"

To a lesser extent, here in my home country of Canada, it bothers me to see things in print spelled the American way. I always cringe when I see a highway sign that reads "City Center"... That is fine and dandy in the US, but it's supposed to be spelled "Centre" here. It only takes a second to proof-read your work...

I do agree that the English language is absolutely chaotic, however most of us learned (at a young age) to avoid the common pitfalls that still plague us to this very day...

Oh, and I'm far from perfect too, someone can likely point out a mistake or two in this post. I would just hope that it's not something as blatantly obvious as the ones I'm talking about...

My 2 cents...

I don't mind people taking a few short cuts when typing informally or on something like MSN.

However, when typing a more formal reply on websites, creating websites, I think it is just polite to spell correctly.

Of course, some non-native English speakers will make a few errors, though that is completely acceptable. As for this simply absurd article and 'change' to the English language. It's simply ridiculous. Why can't people leave the language alone and stop trying to constantly dumb things to a level where no one need make an effort.

Its simple and pure laziness.

Also, British English do have standards as Tonks mentioned. It's the Oxford English Dictionary. For me, if it's not in that, then it's not a word.

In spelling, it is no problem for me, except for those words full of silent letters...

If English have to be "dumbed" down, why not try that on Chinese languages?

By the way, the offical Chinese language has thousands of characters in it, very hard to memorize for many people...

Anyways, if we dumb down English, what will happen?

Lolz, I cn spel wel! U fal, nob! I cn spez betr than ayon, writ? I cn spelz al words corcty, I bt u tn buks! Lolz, u cnt spel! englsh suks, and it is to hrd fr i to lern! intrnt spak rocks, it is so esy!

Try interpeting that Internet Speak!3.gif

By the way, I have gotten a light headache from trying to type Internet speak.

All I have to say is:

Today my son brought home some work and guess what it was on, Net Speak, and it was assigned for English class (or something like that he didn't give much details). So I have a short feeling that not to long Net Speak will be starting up in my son's work and in the way he talks. I wonder what high school will bring for him... 41.gif

It's the parents who need classes in Netspeak.   One of my friends was very happy when I pointed her a site that would help her learn l33t.  Apparently her kid was playing some video game that used it a lot.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

English not being phonetic is something that makes it decidedly harder to learn as a second language. The large number of synonyms and fancy words almost no one ever uses which make the dictionary so much thicker doesn't help, either. It's complicated, too. English has 15 distinct vowel sounds. By comparison, Italian has only five (one for each vowel).

Still, that doesn't mean we need to turn it upside down to fix these "problems". If you want a phonetic language, learn something else. English isn't phonetic. Deal with it.

Little experiment. What would that look like phonetically?

Well, if we're going by the rules of 1337, it says:

Les! I cin beat tsg czd ogs ob yzeu! Yau cazet ientzapt teais sub! Yabu fgbl paac! Dexlss azzins rekz, ael oasgr cizas fazl! I cean pzean al f u bascs, nbaabs! U feasking idots! I sasglh rul teais woard begastes eybeavy on saesld b ms slaaaves! Loieagsloqeatoll!!!quote>

Obviously this person is either really bad at |337, is just trying to be insanely difficult on purpose, is retarded, or (I think this theory might be the best one), is drunk.

Nevertheless, we have the technology, we can rebuild it:

Lies! I can beat the crap out of you! You can't intercept this, bub! You fail, punk! Deckless Asians rock, all other classes fail! I can pwn all of your basics, noosubbquotelv1.gifs! You all fail, you freaking idiots! I shall rule this world because everyone should be my slaves! Lololololol! quote>

It's the six million dollar paragraph!

Well, sorta, anyway. A lot of the words in there may or may not be what I've put. Too loose gibberish.

Some context as to what forum this was at, what the topic at hand was, and who he was responding to would help pin things down better.

    Link, please.

English evolves naturally, in the control of the population that speaks it. Whether it is good or not, the professor's reforms are not going to be adopted by English speakers instantly.

If English speakers start using another spelling or pronunciation, the mainstream language will gradually move there; such as the American transition from 'harbour' to 'harbor'.

I don't like most of his proposals -- such as removing the apostrophe and 'river' to 'rivver'. But it's and its is kind of a common error with me. But I really don't care if either one is the 'official' spelling -- they're both understood based on context.

To put it another way, if enough people use a certain spelling, it will become accepted into the language.

Just think of Old English for an example of this kind of evolution.

...anyways, spelling is a must, one stupid person wants to abandon spelling and there is a big hoo-haa.

Well, I don't understand Leetspeak at all -- and it is so different from conventional English, I don't think it'll be mainstream anytime soon.

I wouldn't call the man stupid -- his opinion is worth considering -- but few of his changes make sense. It wouldn't help understanding English at all.

English does not change from the top-down -- it changes bottom-up -- the speakers change it.

^ I disagree. Regardless of the irritation of some of the specific rules, grammar adds structure and meaning. More importantly, it adds commonality with a shared frame of reference that allows communicators to understand each other. The bottom sentence is a cute trick where the first and last letter in each mispelled word are still in the right place, making them understandable.

Just like a lot of technical jargon, I find L33t and Netspeak as ways to limit the sharing of communication to specific parties.

I'll tell you what will happen -- nothing. People will resist speaking Netspeak and will still speak English if they want to. Other than annoyances with the police, nothing will happen.
