Welcome to another one of my City Journals! yes, another one...deal with it 3.gif Ive been working for weeks planning a new region to the last detail to showcase to you guys but today i came to a realization. it was more of a struggle then what its worth. I then decided to take a different approach and and show you the growth of a town from humble beginnings to traffic jams and sprawl. This will be exciting for me because i havent ever done a CJ this way before. Hopefully you will enjoy reading it as much as i enjoy building it! Just please be nice, im not a good story writer and im not the biggest history person so there will be a few historical hiccups here and there. now, enough of that....lets get this thing going!

update1-1.jpg

September 4, 1901

Our story begins in Bristol, England. French Sea Captain Camille-Francois Berteau and his crew are preparing for a regular Transatlantic crossing to New York City. Their ship, the freighter Ethie is carrying a load of food products and tobacco to the United States and Canada. They are taking the safe route across the Atlantic so in case of storms they can moor at either [fictional] Saint Laurant Island or Newfoundland.

Berteau's Route

It is September 4th when the Ethie leaves Bristol. Ice Berg season is ending in the North Atlantic so its full steam ahead. Life aboard ships is very difficult, you are expected to do your best job no matter the time or sea state so fatigue becomes a factor later in journeys.

September 10, 1901

The tired crew of the SS Ethie spot land on the starboard side. They are just past the mid point of the Atlantic between Ireland and Newfoundland. The land they see is St.Laurant Island. Captain Berteau sees storm clouds in the distance and decides to play it safe and moor in a large bay on the island Berteau knows as Port aux Choix. The Port of Choice. St.Laurant is a small uninhabited island, with only seasonal residents during the fishing season. Port aux Choix is what you would call a perfect harbour, large, sheletered, and deep. It is made up of two unnamed coves. Navigational hazards are at a minimum with only Flagstaff Island at the mouth of the bay and a few rocks near shore. However, on this evening conditions are not the best. It is a typical foggy Atlantic day and the seas are high as there is a fast approaching storm.

Captain Berteau manouvers the Ethie into the large bay. The crew plans to go ashore for the night to salmon fish in the Eagle River and set up camp. Berteau is about to give the instruction to drop anchor when---CREEAAAAAK. The ship comes to a grinding halt. Something has gone terribly wrong. Captain Berteau looks over the side only to see they have some too close to shore and run aground on the rocks. The Ehtie is taking on water in its cargo holds. the crew rushes provisions onto lifeboats and hightails it to shore, leaving their once proud vessel.

The Next Morning

The crew of the Ethie wake up cold and stranded on an uninhabited island in the Mid Atlantic. They have no contact with the outside world as their telegraph was lost at sea, eliminating their chances of contacting the Marconi Station in St.John's. It is a chilly September morning so Berteau and his crew sail out to the grounded Ethie to gather materials for a temporary cabin. There are only three women aboard the vessel so they get to work collecting berries and salmon fishing. If there are any positives about the situation, it is that the Eagle River Valley has some of the most lush, livable land on the island with plenty of wild plants and animals. Fishing season has just ended on the St.Laurant so it will be a long stay for the crew.

A new settlement has been founded by the crew of the Ethie. Watch out for the next update as the discoveries continue 4.gif

Looks nice what with the trees and ploppable water. Interesting background info too. So will this follow everything from 1901 to present day?

Cool! Really cool! That is just what I meant when I said that a realistic story would be great! 3.gif It sounds so history book and that little home (first building in the island) looks cool there next to the river. I love the natural pics.

Good work my friend, and I can't wait the 80s and 90s to come lol. Will be interesting to see how the decades come and go 4.gif

    update2.jpg

    October 9th, 1901

It has been a busy month for the crew of the Ethie. All 18 men have been hard at work laying out roads through the new found village so they could easily get around on their horses. They also built a new wharf for the community along with a blacksmith and storage shed for the salvaged valuables off the ship. Since landing, the three women aboard the ship have gotten married to crewmembers and the familes felt it was nessescery to build their own homes. The wealthy officers aboard the Ehtie also built their own cottages. Port aux Choix is starting to look more like a town then a shipwreck site!

One man had a very special job in the village. Crewmember Thomas O'Neil better known as "Ireland Tommy" had some significant experience in agriculture after working on an Irish farm before persuing his seafaring career. Thomas took it upon himself to set up a small farm in the Eagle River Valley to supply fresh produce to the village so everybody could stay relatively happy and healthy. Growing vegetables on St.Laurant was sometimes very difficult due to the unpredictable weather conditions so he had to work his hardest day and night to monitor his crops. It is October 9th and the harvest season is about to end so his small gathering will have to do for the winter.

The NAM dirt roads work really well for this.

Try using a low powered valley tool to make the river bed, and then lay single road tiles to flatten it out and then the ploppable water.  Rocks, trees and logs are very useful to dress the edges and also hide anything that you don't want people to see.

I wonder when they will get around to building their first lighthouse ....  cough.  1.gif

This is looking good, my friend. Is this CJ going to outline the region's growth from 1900s to the present? If so, that is an awesome concept and I'd like to see how you pull it off!

Hey Grant! 4.gif I love this new update! I see how that settlement is getting the look of a town! And thanks to Thomas O'Neil you have some agriculture products 4.gif I love the storyline since the crew of a ship had to become pioners on an unknown island and start a town. That is very interesting. Now we only need some fishers and all that stuff 2.gif hehe

Good work my friend, the rsty ship is a great detail!
