Didn't think it was the desert terrain mod, you did metion it was a Marish request. I think it looks pretty real world and would like to see something like that released in addition to a desert mod. The color scheme has definately imporved over the early pictures. You do great work and I'm glad you have the talent and patience to do this. I really enjoy the artic/snow cap mod and am looking foward to any new mods you come out with.

Actually, that was more directed to Arphaxad Locus. You and me just happened to post at the same time! 22.gif

Anyway, if you guys want the above terrain just download it here.

To install, just copy the 'Plains.dat' and 'Desert_Plains_Textures.dat' to your plugin folder. OR, if you want the snow-capped version, install 'Plains_Snowcapped.dat' and 'Desert_Plains_Textures.dat' PLUS 'arctic_snowcapped_textures.dat' from the Arctic/Snow-capped Mod in your plugin folder.

And just to answer any possible questions I'm only calling it the plains mod for simplicity's sake.

    I like it..but it doesn't seem right

    eureka.sand.dunes.jpg

something with a very small tint of yellow, maybe, and whitish/black. Not milk (snowy white,) but BRIGHT white.

    163timn_mush.jpg

Another great option would be to have two desert mods..the white one..and a red one. Like in this picture, of Timna national park (someplace in Israel.) The rock is red. Your last reddish version was great..but I can't pinpoint what it was that kept it from being perfect.

Maybe these pics will give you some inspiration.

Thanks Teruisu, I downloaded the plain terrain, and I think it looks great, removes that overly green look and adds a dryer feel and goes well with the farms.  1.gif  One more request though, could you make a plains with the lower snow cap you have, I would greatly appreciate it.

Before/After adding the plains mod.  The difference is most notable on the hills to the right.

P.S. Maybe you should add the plains to the mod page.

Well, that nails the issue: Deserts are probably the most varied landscape in the world, color-wise. I've been to most of the deserts in the USA, and many of them are more like scrub-forests than what we think of as desert generally. So I guess it's either make a bunch of different looks, or settle on one general desert that is kinda in-between.

Some deserts are green by the water:img003.jpg

Some are like the great basin (though this pic is in Peru):
    23548107.sPeruvianHighlands.jpg

    Some really are barren:atacama1.jpg

But most are variously green: 4peaks.jpg

Anyways, hope the pics are inspiring.10.gif

P.S. The Sonoran/Chihuahuan deserts found in NM and AZ do have plenty of grass. It's just not usually green....

Sure Fgottes, here you go. Same rules apply as with the other snow-capped plains. You must have both texture.dats in your plugin folder.

And thanks for the pictures flamesrock and Smack Sim! These will surely help out a bit! 1.gif

One thing also to consider in desert terrain mod is the flora of the region. Any way to mod in a joshua tree, or a saltcedar (tamarisk) to represent the trees of the desert? I've been wishing for that for a while.

To be honest, the most realistic desert I've created in the game is just regular game dirt at a moderate elevation (just below the snow-cap-mod elevation.) If that color could just stretch down to the shores, it'd be great.

As an FYI, from my extensive travels through the Mojave Desert (over 90,000 miles worth)-

Lowest elevations - light rocks, sparse vegetation, some thin grasses in springtime.

    Sea level:
    morefuneralclouds.jpg

1000 feet -- 5000 feet : same kind of desert gravel, more dense brush, more thin grasses in the springtime.

    3000 feet:
    thelosthighway.jpg

5000 feet - 6000 feet : Notably thicker scrub. Depending on area, rocks change color from greyish gravel to reddish sand (but that may just be geographical coincidence.) Extensive greyish green grasses in the spring and summer. Large trees (cottonwoods) develop near water sources.

    6000 feet (Utah):

    MVC-012S.JPG

6000 feet and up : Increasing woods, tends to be more greyish granite regardless of location. Juniper, cedar, ponderosa pine fluorish. Widespread grasses, particularly above 8000 feet. Timberline is generally around 11,000 feet.

    9000 feet:

    canyons1.jpg

I hope this helps. Of course, if anyone had pictures of the desert out of an airplane, that'd probably help the modd squad more than anything, since that's the general view they'll be using in the region view anyway.

Could we get a re-cap of what files we need to use the snow-capped version? It's been crashing my game when I've used it.

To get the snow-capped version of the plains to work you need three files:

'Plains_Snowcapped.dat' or 'Plains_Snowcapped_Lower.dat', do not use both at the same time. You can get the 'Plains_Snowcapped_Lower.dat' file from one of my posts. Then, you also need 'Desert_Plains_Textures.dat'.

Finally, you also need 'arctic_snowcapped_textures.dat' from the updated Arctic/Snow-Capped Mod. You can download it from the mods section or my website at http://www.teirusu.net/

These three files should be placed in the main plugin folder, not the My Documents folder.

That looks strangely familiar; I've probably driven that stretch of highway before. Hmmm... CA-18?

Anyway, good job on the FYI. I'd love to see a desert mod based on the ol' Mojave.

That's the road out of Death Valley heading towards Death Valley Junction and eventually Pahrump... CA 190 methinks?

From your description, it must indeed be the 190 (although it doesn't go to Pahrump; but that's beside the point). I actually thought it was the 18 somewhere east of Apple Valley, but you're definitely right.

This certainly is an odd tangent...

I was just wondering how the desert mod was progressing?  Are there any updates available to see?  Also one thing that came to my mind, is it going to be possible to have the grass on the lots appear as dirt, like can be done with the snow mod?

Teirusu, I forgot to send the proper thanks for the plains mod with the lowered snow line.  <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif> I like the way it looks and I see some others have started CJ's using the mod.  Cool <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/10.gif>

Actully, I like this terrian alot as it is, even though it is not throughly finished. One interesting thing about it is it reminds me of early SimCity 4 snapshots and how some of the land would look. that was kind of cool on my regions.

For now, you will just have to deal wih scrub.  You would have to download the tree control pack.
