I really hope Hampi proposes the first college in Virgin Shores. I really want something to be called Hampus Campus!! It sounds great in my head anyway!

I'm looking forward to the next update too.

Whoa that sounds really cool!  48.gif  Also, I think that Oilville could have a small elementary school, but for now they will have to check out books, and go to high school in Downtown.

Yea there are about 3 starbucks in a two mile drag known as Scenic Highway.

I'm not sure why though.

EDIT: HUGE page flip bug.

Don't worry, I ate plenty.

I can't wait for an update.

Ntq$310: I think the first set of beaches would be fine- Approved

DTP: I was thinking of using mainly maxis, but if you have better custom fields/parks, then that would be great.

Also a new proposal:

Memo to the Dept. of Planning:
I would like to put a small motel in Oilville for workers coming through town, here's the motel:

link

Let me know if that one is too big and we'll go with the second choice:

link

Last, but not the least:
I propose a small commercial area next to the hotel/motel

FINALLY! I have the update complete! All 37 pictures! (plus a new edition of the atlas, but it's not ready yet... I got bored clicking on pixels for hours on end, so it's not quite complete yet.

    But first some

    replybanner.jpg

Patricius Maximus: It's done. See below.

And yeah, that's Franklin St. And did you notice South Franklin St. on the map too? 2.gif

Ntq$310: That sounds like it would work. We'll see what the DOR says. Nice beaches too!

    GreekMan: Thanks.

TimeMaster: Wait no more! It was according to those data views I had... if you don't remember, it covers almost all of the city.

psander5: Hampus Campus! Ha! That's funny. Stuff really does go good with his name though. I mean, even Hampus Boulevard sounds good. I gotta stop naming stuff after him! 18.gif

TimeMaster: OK, a re-lotted Maxis school, or the Peg MTP school (like the school on Center St.)?

    Ntq$310: I guess because it's a cool name.

sedimenjerry: Actually, I think you fixed it. And it was still only 7 posts. Not that bad.

Doesn't sound very scenic with all those starbucks!

TimeMaster: Medical clinic with a green roof? Can you specify? There's the Oak Grove/Southside Emergency Care Clinic, Center St. Clinic (standard Maxis), and then the new one in the north.

crazyarchitect: Well I figured that there are so many better custom playing fields etc. out there that it wouldn't make sense to just use Maxis.

First motel I'd say is too tall for Oilville, but that's about the Maximum Height I'd consider for the resort area.

Second one sounds good! If approved the commercial can accompany it.

    Ntq$310: There currently isn't one.

TimeMaster: So that school and clinic in Oilville?

Before I commence the update, here is some

    PICTURE INFORMATION:

I have jumped on the bandwagon when it comes to pictures, and have decided to use the "Click for full resoultion!" method. Most images are linked to the original 1280x1024 image in full quality.

Also, I've included two challenges in this update:

    1) If anybody can tell me what is different about the Franklin St. railroad crossing besides the work-in-progress TRP (Transit Retexturing Project), you'll receive the usual honors.

    2) There is at least one picture in this update that contains 0 Maxis content. The only hint is that it focuses on Highway 1. Tell which one and receive the usual honors as well.

    Now on with the update!

Construction commenced on August 4th 2029 on Virgin Shores Highway 2.

    Highway2herald.jpg

    201Begingradingeasternterminus.jpg

20.1: Grading the eastern terminus of VS-2.

As soon as the grading was complete, several new gas stations moved into Patricius Maximus's development on Franklin St.

    202Gasstations.jpg

    20.2

When work was begun on paving the highway, a construction camp was set up.

    203Firstpavementateasternteminus.jpg

    20.3

Soon work was begun on preparing the roadbed for Highway 1.

    Highway1herald.jpg

    204Begingradingsouthernterminus.jpg

    20.4

Before work could continue on VS-1, an access road for a farm had to be relocated.

    206Cornfarmaccessroadrealignment.jpg

    20.6

Then the northbound side of the highway was graded.

    207Gradingofsouthboundside.jpg

    20.7

    And soon grading was complete.

    207Gradingofsouthboundside.jpg

    20.8

To handle the traffic to and from the new freeway, the dirt road it was projected to terminate at just wasn't going to cut it, and needed to be upgraded, so it was, to a full road.

    209Dirtroadupgrade.jpg

    20.9

The road was then upgraded all the way into Frontier, as part of an overall project to improve the area's roads by paving some of them.

    2011FrontierRdpavingphaseI.jpg

    20.11

Once the surrounding area was prepared, paving could finally commence.

    2010Pavedsouthernterminus.jpg

    20.10

The entire stretch of VS-1 was soon paved through the farms.

    2012pavedsouthernportion.jpg

    20.12

Finally work was to commence on the masterpiece that is Virgin Shores's first trumpet interchange. Here you can see the embankments graded and the land already cleared for the MIS ramps.

    2013Trumpetoverpassgrading.jpg

    20.13

The workers' first priority was the nothbound VS-1 to eastbound VS-2 ramp, as it was the one expected to carry traffic first. You can even see that they've started work on the landscaping along it.

    2014CompletedsouthernMISramp.jpg

    20.13

And, as expected, as soon as it was open 20 freight trucks were already using it to get to the rail freight transfer station south of Franklin St., where their cargo was loaded onto trains to the seaport.

    201517freighttruckusage.jpg

    20.15

The next step for the construction workers was to begin preparing the route of the loop ramps.

    2016Clearingfortrumpet.jpg

    20.16

The ramps were soon completed and opened for traffic.

    2017Completedtrumpetramps.jpg

Soon after the overpass was completed and the northern MIS ramp connected and landscaped.

    2018CompletednorthernMISramp.jpg

    20.18

A small accident caused by two trucks trying to exit from NB VS-1 to EB VS-2 prompted the plans to be slightly revised to include a deceleration lane before the exit.

    2019Completeddecelerationlane.jpg

    20.19

Here's a overview shot of the interchange completely signed:

    2020Completedinterchange.jpg

    20.20

Here is that same shot with a pond added inside the ramps. If we decided to keep this (please give me feedback), I will try and make it look slightly marshy around the edges using Chris Adams' wonderful RRP flora.

    2024lakeproposal.jpg

    20.24

Here's the completed portion of VS-2 heading east toward Franklin St.:

    2021completedeasternportion.jpg

    20.21

And the completed portion of VS-1 heading north towards Oilville:

    2023VS-1headingnorthwardtowardOilvi.jpg

    20.23

For the DOT, I already have a new interchange proposal:

    2022Newinterchangeproposal.jpg

    20.22

At the end of VS-2, there's already new, classic freeway development: McDonald's.

    2025McDonalds.jpg

    20.25

And it even comes complete with a highway sign:

    2026McDonaldshighwaysign.jpg

    20.26

Now on to entirely unrelated news:

Patricius Maximus's latest residential development has been zoned, but nobody's moved into it yet.

    2027PatricianDevelopment.jpg

    20.27

Also the first Fire Station had to be hastily constructed on the Coast Highway in 2031 after a fire broke out at sim-Al2's construction company. It was nothing major, and was quickly taken care of, but it was a fire nonetheless. This means that in the September Elections I will be adding a Dept. of Public Safety.

    2021FirstFireStation.jpg

    20.21

Here's a shot of a train heading down the Coastal & Western line just north of Frontier, along Frontier Rd., loaded down with goods destined for the port. It's just a random shot showing my variety of rail skins.

In case anyone's wondering, the C&W has to lease a few locomotives from the US railroad CSX, thus the CSX loco.

    205UnrelatedpicleasedCSXlocopullsfr.jpg

    20.5

Lastly, in regards to the DOT's Passenger Rail Study, I believe you requested some rail pics, Patricius. Here is the station that would be used for the southern end of the line, right by the bus stop on Main St. The rest of the line can be seen in other recent pics, and I was thinking of a station around Franklin St. and one in Frontier.

    2028MainStRailStation.jpg

    20.28

Lastly, before we move on to Oilville, a new commercial area is being built along Kilallen Blvd, which was extended across the rail line. A pedestrian bridge was also added to safely carry people across Franklin St. and the C&W line.

    2029Newcommercialpedestrianbridge.jpg

    20.29

Moving on into Frontier, two of the new windmills have been constructed offshore.

Be forewarned, there's a strange graphical bug.

    2030Offshorewindmills.jpg

    20.30

To get this power to the mainland, an underwater cable was constructed.

    2031Underwatercablerunningtowindmil.jpg

    20.31

Now back to freeways, here's how VS-1 enters Oilville and crosses the South River:

    2032VS-1SouthRiverBridge.jpg

    20.32

The freeway then smoothly turns 135°to the southwest, and then swings another 45° to head west into Oilville. Sound walls were constructed along part of the north side as it adjoins a residential area

    2033VS-1Curves.jpg

    20.33

The final interchange on the highway, for now, is a modified parclo just over the rail line.

    2034OilvilleParclo.jpg

    20.34

Building the highway up to this point took about 4 years, from 2029-2033.

Here's a shot of current usage (about 20 cars commuting to Patricius Maximus's Franklin St. commercial developments):

    2038TrafficflowoutofFrontier.jpg

    20.38

To conclude this update, here are some random shots from Oilville:

The recently opened VSBN Oilville Branch:

    2035VSNBOilvilleBranch.jpg

    20.35

I just thought this was a neat shot because of how I got the fences and lot textures to fit in.

    2036NeatshotinOilville.jpg

    20.36

That concludes our 1000th post/20th update bash! Hope you enjoyed it, and I just remembered that I completely forgot about the NFR carrier sitting off the coast waiting to do an airshow. Oh well, thanks PM Archean for sending them over anyway!

    I will show you where,

DTP, I must say that you're moving into my strongest area in transit -- freeways. The trumpet looks better than expected. Indeed, both Highway 1 and Highway 2 are looking great.

The DOT rejects the Mayor's proposal for the interchange near Frontier. On the northern set of ramps, the proximity to the trumpet is too close for my taste.

I propose that a full diamond interchange be constructed on the southern part to prevent weaving.

I'm very pleased with Highway 1 going into Oilville. The bridge across the river, combined with the 135 degree curve and the sound walls, makes for a realistic and attractive scene.

I also see that commuters are going to my developments. I appear to have contributed to the growth of Oilville, and I hope I'll continue to do so.

Supercity124: I do believe that the DOT should have a say in your proposal, so I'll break it down into it's components.

    a) Proposal for diamond interchange rejected. It will cause weaving on the freeway.

    b) Proposal for Road overpass rejected. The DOT has no objection to it, but the RHW pieces do not exist yet for Road over diagonal RHW. The DOT reccomends it be modified into a tunnel (or underpass).

    c) The DOT has no objection to paving Frontier Road.

    d) The DOT reccomends that the residential development be flanked by sound walls, since it is in close proximity to an interchange that could become busy in the future.

    e) Be advised that some of the development can be demolished in the future when Highway 2 is extended, and the interchange converted into a cloverstack.

Other than these notes, the DOT does not object to the plan. The Planning Department will have to weigh in next.

Lastly, please resize that picture to 800 x 600.

Head of the Department of Transportation

I would like to take part, but sadly I just don't have the time to do so.  But that doesn't mean I  will stop viewing VS!  You have just made a amazing update!  Excellent job constructing that trumpet interchange, it looks fantastic!  The other development and construction photos look great as well!  I like the one pic with all the ave curves, creative indeed!

Also, I noticed that you are now presenting your photos in full resolution.  That's great!  However, I have yet to find a single photo in your update that is 1280x1024... The largest is an odd 1024x819...  -What is your resolution in-game?  If your monitor's resolution is 1280x1024, then make sure you have your desktop resolution and SC4's resolution set at this as well.

This is striking me as odd... And it may be contributing to the scrolling problems you said you were having...  Anyways, I hope this helps, setting SC4 to your natural resolution will greatly improve the appearance of the game.

    Best,

supercity124: OK, all of the DOT's comments I agree with. And please resize your picture to comply with the site maximum of 800x600. Also, that farm is owned by somebody, and so at this time cannot be redeveloped.

Patricius Maximus: Thanks, glad you like it. I'm really proud of it.

OK, so move the diamond down to the lower road and it's OK?

Yes you have, without that commercial there, Oilville would not be prospering this much.

All of your points about supercity's development are valid.

un1: That might be managable, we'll see what the Planning Committee says.

TimeMaster: Yes, I will, I had just already taken those pictures when you proposed them.

Hampi: Of course you don't! 18.gif

Thanks. I'll build a few coffee shops.

Could you refresh me on the development, please? It seems to have slipped my mind.

haljaceky: After looking at that I guess it is! Wow.

    That's fine, thanks for reading!

    Thank you.

Oh, I realized that after, photobucket automatically resizes pictures to the closest thing to 1024x768 sticking to the aspect ratio. My monitor is 1280x1024, and SC4 is set as that as well. That's always the first thing I do to a game, set it's resolution. It's just photobucket.

    rct3twins: Thanks.

    Splime: Thanks!

great update, my bank is doing very good so far.

Now in oilville i saw zots with nowater on them, does it have innsufficent water coverage? or is there not enough water?

Im trying to keep up on my issues.

Great job on the wind plants, and i cant seem to remember if my proposal to extend the beaches get through? hmm thinking about it i actually wouldn't own them seeing as this is more or so to try and spark more development in the area. mabey you can just name them after me instead9.gif

Wow, I don't think you would want me to say "holy update", oh oops already did. 4.gif

This was very informative! And the trumpet interchange looks absolutely more intricate then the one i'm about to show in my next Lomni Update. I, forgot what Patricius calls it, but he has the same style somewhere in Franklin County. Great construction of your highways, and I'm glad they didn't interfere with any farmland, cause those rice paddies look amazing.

And don't worry about not showing the airshow, They'll just sit there for some R&R away from the homeland. Hey, this is the first time any Follomerians traveled to Virgin Shores, ironic that the first Follomerians to go to their ally's nation would be Follomer Military servicemen.

Great update! You sure did work your butt off.

supercity124: I think the residential area you proposed is a little close to the new highway junction.  See below for my recommended revision, an open buffer that might prevent the need for sound walls (I have a personal distaste for them, but as the adept Patriciux Maximus recommends them i'll leave the final call to the Mayor) .  I think there is plenty of space to expand residential areas away from the highways.  Residential approved - revised  Your commercial zone, as has already been confirmed by the mayor, would infringe on an existing landowner's property. Commercial rejected

    revision.jpg

un1:  I think that building is acceptable.  It's quite bulky, so it might be a squeeze to fit it into the current downtown area.  I'll leave the final call to the mayor though as this BAT provides 1400 CO$$ jobs, and i'm not certain that we have enough demand as of update 20.  The last graph said there was room for around 5000 CO$$ jobs if I remember right, so there should be enough demand.  Pending

Request to the mayor: can I have an updated overview picture please, showing the new highways and developments?  It would make it a bit easier to plan developments if we could see the whole city in one picture.  I'd be able to see if there's room in downtown for un1's office building.

Hampi: I think your coffee shops should be on their way.  I approved them around update 19 I think.  As it's such a small BAT, I think the mayor can use his disgression on locations around several of the commercial areas.

I think i've got everything there.  Please speak up if I ever miss a proposal.

EDIT: I forgot Crazyarchitect's motel proposal9.gif  The second motel is ok.  I think it best suits the aesthetic of the small town.  Motel Approved.  A small commercial accompaniment you say? That's fine also. Approved

Now that business is out of the way....

Great update!  The new Highways look amazing!  Keep the pond in the interchange, but i'd shrink it a little so there's room to crash off the road and not land in a soggy patch!  The curve after the bridge and before Oilville is stunning.

Great news about the offshore wind farm!  I live in England, which has an abundance of locations (and wind!) for offshore wind farms, but too many people think they spoil the scenery so not enough are getting built.  It's a crazy shame, because I reckon we have enough space to comfortably get 25% of our energy from the wind (+tidal).  Plus, I think the turbines look monumentally great (applies to both RL and Virgin Shores/Sim City4)

And like the real estate developer I am.

I would like to propose a new development  plans for Virgin Shores:

    Realestatedevelopment-1.jpg

Light Green: Housing development, Light Residential.

Dark Green: Some kind of park.

Light Blue: Commercial Development, DTP is free to choose what commercials that shall be built there!
