WELCOME!

to Virgin Shores 2.0

Background:

Those of you who are also members of SimPeg will know that I recently turned a game experiment into a city journal--the Virgin Shores Metropolitan Area. That CJ has kind of died, as it was before I downloaded a bunch of cool things I have now, including the Terraformer, and the only thing I really did with it was replace things which would soon be replaced again. Today, I have taken it upon myself to re-start this CJ, on a site with more members--Simtropolis.

With a new Terraformed region that measures 3 X 5 large city tiles, I will once again grow a city into my largest metropolis, but this time I will attempt to start it at the basic level--nothingness.

Before I start, here's a link to my old one at SimPeg. You're all welcome to leave a comment there, as I am still active on that site.

And let's begin.

Pre-SimHistory

The initial Terraforming

Here is the initial map made in the Terraformer, before it's been rendered, and before any precision God Mode terrraforming.

VirginShores20terraformer.jpg

We'll be back tonight preparing for the arrival of the sims...

Feel free to tell me what you think of the map.

Lastly, I encourage people's help/advice/suggestions, and they will usually result in having something named after you.

The map looks very nice! Hopefully, you don't face any problems with the terraforming circles in the water, as these will appear once rendered (I think so, as this happened to me once, just a tip 2.gif ). You could set a common depth of the water(s) and than lower the land afterwards. This should work!

Anyways, I am looking forward to further development and.. hopefully the sims are not too virgin (hope I can say this without being thrown out) lol

I like it! I'll be glad when you do some precision terraforming.

Great to see another new CJ out there.

Looking forward to tonight...

Nice looking map DP.  Vandy can give you any help you might need if you encounter any problems in the rendering.  I'm looking forward to where you go from here.

looks good. I don't think that there should be any problems with the map except in the top the large cicular hills but if you like those than... have at 'er

    WOW!

This is quite an impressive response I've gotten!

    Thanks for commenting all!

    Now it's time for...

    REPLIES!

    Mailbox.jpg

superchad: Thanks. I'm sure it will be

lucky7: I've experimented plenty with the terraformer before undertaking this. The circles don't seem to be a problem unless they're VERY pronounced, which these aren't. I've rendered it (as you'll soon see), and they weren't really a problem.

You can say just about anything here, I won't throw you out (but I can't speak for the mods)

Patricius Maximus: I wouldn't want to keep the great emperor waiting now would I? 2.gif

underwearman2007: If you follow the link to the original Virgin Shores on SimPeg you will see that it mentions in the first post why the region is named as it is. It is in no way ... suggestive ... I sure hope I don't screw it up too!

Sam (SamFlash): Thanks for stopping by. I don't think I had any problems rendering, it actually came out looking pretty good.

jjune4991: The hills do look a little circular, but hidden beneath the lush temperate forests, you don't even notice. 9.gif

mancoolman: Again, the hills didn't come out that bad, and the trees kind of hide it.

jacqulina: Thanks. Glad you like it.

    UPDATE 1A

Here is a link to a map for any of you cartographers out there, showing the region, with most physical features labeled. This map is purely to be used as a point fo reference, and is not meant to be an accurate topographical map (just so you know dedgren, in case you read this). I had to link to it because it is a fairly large file, and I did not want to condense it.

The map also shows the 'precision' terraforming I did, which mainly included adding a few small streams, removing sandbars from rivers that are supposed to be navigable, and adding a few elsewhere, as well as creating the Hawk Island Port, which is the regions main seaport. There might be more minor terraforming once development starts, so keep an eye out for that.

On the map, as you can see, there are still features in desperate need of a name. This is where you come in.

Individual pictures of the 12 cities will come in update 1B.

[NOTE: SORRY IF YOU SEE FORMATTING ERRORS, I'M STILL WORKING SOME THINGS OUT]

EDIT: Here is more, jacqulina 2.gif

Your map looks good. I like a good island seaport! I look forward to seeing it develop, and how it connects to the mainland... it looks like a nice big gap!

    UPDATE 1B

I'm going to have spread these images over  several posts, but here we go.

First, an overview of -borrowing a term from 3RR- quad 1 (the SE corner).

    Quad1Overview-1.jpg

The small amount of water in the center is Greta's Springs.

    GretasSprings.jpg

And a few hundred feet off shore is Dorito Island.

    DoritoIsland.jpg

In quad 2, here are Custer's Bend

    CutlersBend.jpg

    Bald Peak

    BaldPeak.jpg

and a small, unnamed creek off of the South River

    unnamedcreek.jpg

If anyone's got a minute, this creek is still unnamed. You're welcome to name it, as long as it's appropriate, by voting in the new poll!

nice area. i like how you made that into a spring. would be a cool place for a resort or camp ground in the future.

EDIT: since you decided to put in more pics, i say, Harper's Creek.

Let's do one last set of replies before calling it a night.

    Mailbox.jpg

psander5: It will probably be connected with a NAM Avenue level bridge. I love my seaports, and this one will be filled with Peg's stuff (some of which is even still in beta 2.gif, as I'm a tester at his site). But that's not coming for a little while yet, although I think tomorrow we'll start development in the two quads we've looked at so far. Then I'll introduce the other quads as I go.

Schulmanator: Glad to see you approve. I've read through a little of Schulmania, but 500 pgs. is  a lot to read, so don't expect me to return the commenting favor for a while 1.gif

Patricius Maximus: I update as I play, simply put.

(And you better not mind waiting, because this is my CJ and I'll update it when I please!) 17.gif 2.gif

    Madog: It's coming... tomorrow!

    crazyarchitect: Thanks!

    ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

As stated in a reply, I'm not going to continue showing all 12 quads before beginning development. Tomorrow we're going to establish the first coastal settlement, and then begin spreading outward.

There is also a poll up at the top of the page regarding the creek mentioned in update 1B. Please take a second to vote. I'll close it probably tomorrow.

    Thanks for reading.

    SMALL UPDATE 2!

    YEAR 0-3

The first sims have arrived in Virgin Shores! After the abandonment of the old city, a small group of sims set out across the great ocean in a commandeered ferry boat. After sailing for many days, they sighted land on the horizon, and eventually reached shore by a small stream. They anchored offshore, and a smaller group of sims went ashore in the lifeboat from the ferry, to check out the immediate area, and set to work building a dock so that the ferry could safely land and they could retrieve their cars (not that it would do much good, as they old had small amounts of gasoline).

    FerryDock.jpg

Over the next few years, they built a small settlement which included some little cottages, two fields, and a small shop to repair and refuel their vehicles and farm equipment, all along a dirt track along the stream leading away from the ferry dock.

    Firstsettlement.jpg

I'll keep the poll open for a little while longer, but so far the response has been a unanimous "yes"

In the post at the top there is now also a link to a "settlement map" that will show the location of major towns, and soon there will also be a road map, albeit a primitive one made in paint and word.

By request of jjune4991, here are some

    REPLIES!

    Mailbox.jpg

lucky7: Next update's up! Glad you like the dense woods--the trees are cycledogg's if you like them. I also have some SFBT seasonal trees, but they're annoying to use in large areas, so, like in the old one, I didn't bother, but in some parks, etc., I might once the city really gets going.

vinvin du 13: Thanks for the compliment!

jacqulina: We'll get really scenic in a few (game) decades when the simnational government sets up the park system. Glad you like it so far (and thanks for being a regular commenter--you too, lucky7)

jjune4991: Whoops! Sorry! I just missed your post. Here, you can have the ferry dock as compensation: June's Landing. (If that's OK)

The map has been updated. Now the actual reply:

The springs will probably become a national park when they're established, and it will probably have hiking trails and a campground.

    It's JUST BEGUN...

Update 3 in a few minutes...

I am going at a rapid pace, but it only takes like five minutes in the game to prepare these updates, so they'll come rather frequently. I'll create a Table of Contents when we start to have multiple pages.

    UPDATE 3!!!

    OIL

One day, in January of year 3, a sim was digging in his backyard, when he hit something mushy. He pushed down a little farther, and a gooey black substance started oozing up out of the ground.

    "OIL"

he cried, and people came running. In a few weeks, the settlers had constructed a large well in the sim's former backyard, and there was much rejoicing.

    OilWell.jpg

Soon after a boat left the ferry dock for other parts of the simworld bearing news of this discovery, new sims started arriving by the dozens, and the town's population soon hit 130. This prompted them to start cultivating another field, and building more houses. The man was even able to buy out his neighbor and build himself a bigger house on a larger lot in front of the well. The entire town was expanding rapidly.

    Post-OilBoomtown.jpg

To get the crude oil out, and bring supplies in, the town held a meeting and voted to build a small freight pier on the northern side of the ferry dock, as well as expand it to add a boat ramp.

    Firstseaport.jpg

The seaport, by the way, is Pegasus's new Pier One, which is a modular pier that you plop right in the water. The lots will be available to the general public soon.

There is currently a shortage of labor for the pier and the farms, so stay tuned this evening to see where this goes next.

Very good updates. They're coming at such a pace I can hardly keep up with it.... I like it!

Virgin Shores should make a lot of money for new projects. They have black gold flowing out of those wells at $4 a gallon.

One question; are they pumping out mainly gasoline or diesel -- or is the refining done elsewhere.

Lastly, I see you have a poll going on -- like my CJ -- it is nice when you can see what the viewers want. I voted yes, by the way.

    Keep it coming!

I feel Patricius's comment necessitates an individual reply, but no mailbox this time. 2.gif

Like I've stated before, I update as I play. I might start doing larger updates spaced farther apart though.

Who says gas costs §4 a gallon there? 3.gif So far it costs about §10/gallon, as they have to import it.

SO FAR, the refining is done elsewhere. They just send the crude out, and bring the gas in. There'll be a lot more about refining later, and I have grand plans for the oil industry. 11.gif But we'll have to se what the future brings...

Thanks for your vote. I guess I'm going to close the poll now. (I guess you figured out that I "borrow" a lot of ideas from others' CJs)

Probably one more update tonight! The town is growing...
