Nailed and Killed.

Iv always wondered how much those bike helmets realy protect.

Looks like that one helmet just poped right off.

Stupidity Should Always be Painful

the only thing that helps me maintain my slender grip on reality is the friendship I share with my collection of singing potatoes.

how can one man be so stupid to both drive fubar and drive on a closed route? (I suggest the route was closed for the duration of the race... at least every serious bicycle race takes place on streets closed to traffic)

Bike helmets aren't meant to protect you from injury if you get hit by a car. Nothing can protect you from that except avoiding it. The car is too much bigger than you. Physics dictates that you lose in any collision.

What bike helmets are meant to protect you from is cracking your skull open if you fall. Whether it be from crashing into something stationary, colliding with another bike, hitting a bump in the ground and tripping, etc.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

This is completely mental. I hope he gets charged with the maximum sentence.

On the other hand, how te hell was he able to get on the race route? It should have been closed off.

How sick is that? That guy should never be allowed to drive again, ever! In fact he shouldn't be allowed to ever get near a car again.

I used to ride my bike every day to school and back... in a situation like that, there's nothing you could do to not get hit (and in a race it's probably even worse because you have people all around you).

That is one of the most horrifying pictures I've ever seen.

What a terrible occurrence that could have easily been prevented had the driver of that car not been idiotic enough to get behind the wheel of a car...

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.

Let me see if I get this straight...

Take a cyclist. Human and bike, roughly 200 lbs total (w/ gear and all). If that's going at about 30 mph (this was a race after all), generates around 90,000 Joules in kinetic energy (using the old formula, [0.5 x MASS x SPEED at the power of 2]).

Now, take an averawge mid-size car, like the one implied here. Roughly 2 tons (4,000 lbs). Let's say it's also going at a steady 30 mph (we don't know the speed, probably never will, so it's a guess).

That car's generating about 1,800,000 Joules in kinetic energy... Compared to "only" 90,000 for the cyclist.

If we substract the cyclist's energy from the mix = leaving 1,710,000 Joules. Not much less, you'll agree, compared to the whole.

So, that's something with a total energy of 1,710,000 hitting you straight-on.

Somehow, I don't think ANY amount of helmets or padding could protect you from such an impact. At this point, broken bones would probably be the least of your worries, as you'd be trying to stay alive.

(I know my math may be off a bit, it's the first time I've ever done this... But it's still in the neighborhood of the numbers above.)

That driver should be sued for all he's got, IN ADDITION to rotting in jail for a few years. Killed one, injured ten...

And let me go on record, stating that that image, the car ploughing through the bikes and sending people and equipment a dozen feet in the air in all directions, is easily the most disturbing and horrific image I've ever seen. This coming from a guy that once spend years looking up old war photos.

Horrible.

I’m a guy who just can’t guy right.

I know it was a tragic incident, but sadly there have been others where people killed others WILLINGLY. I'm not saying this is good in the least, but he should deserve even more blame if he were awake and sober.

I don't know, maybe he wasn't clear thinking. But IMO everyone who sits behind a wheel drunk is willingly putting others at risk, so there's absolutely no difference for me.

@ Bumdark: I agree, the other cyclists were kinda lucky. It could have come out much worse.

That picture is just horrible. This incident is just horrible. My condolences go out to Alejandro's family and friends.

I hope the person driving that car gets  a minimum of 20 years and can never drive again. He's a worthless piece of trash to society!
