Extra! Extra! Read all about it !

After five months of city planning (or 720 "Sim" years) and the misses having a baby half way through, I (or is that "Mayor Felipe"??)  am proud

to bring you SAO PAULO. Of course this is not to be confused with the sprawling Brazilian metropolis it, er, slightly resembles as of course this

Sao Paulo exists in the parallel world of SC4.

Planning

Mayor Felipe's predecessors (or was it me?) decided to start the construction of the city to the south of the Rio Sao Paulo, here's an aerial picture

taken a handful of years after it's birth.

The early years

Wide open flat plains, a source of fresh water for drinking, industry and farming and a huge river for transport, could they possibly have picked a

 better place to start?

The plan was for the main East-West and North-South roads to cross at Sao Paulo, the North-South road bridging the river to the North of the

settlement. To the East of the city an industrial and port area were to be established, on the North bank of the river the airport was to be sited.

The city was planned primarily for motorists, allowing only for the main East-West and North-South Railways, as well as a later South-East spur.

Also envisioned was the future need for an underground system.

Development

The bulk of the city’s early development was around the historic core, further spreading East to West South of the river, with not much urban sprawl

to the North. Early on two major North-south and East West Freeways were built as well as and East-West Freeway North of the river linking the city

to the Airport and the Industrial areas to the North East. We can see such development in this traffic view here:

Early growth of Sao Paulo

A few dozen decades later and things really take off. Development is widespread in the North and the city has spread significantly East and South, to

the east sprawl has emerged on the West bank of the Rio Sao Bernardo.

The city starts to Sprawl

Today the “Million City” is immense, still heavily urbanised to the South of the River, but also with large development to the North as this Street map

shows:

And this night time view shows the

It's looking good nice transit system 4.gif

I think you need the BAT Night-light fix, since those buildings don't look abandoned but they have no night-lights.

Congratz on the one million, can you give us a colour legend of what each line represents in the street layout map? This CJ is off to a good start!

Fantastic layout, and I love the city pic. You may need the nightlight fix, though.

The night time shot was a Region Census view image, cropped then colour reduced to two colours (black & white) & a tiny teensy bit of retouching.

Hi, inbetween nappy changes, time for a few more pictures.

    The Past

As a recently discovered archive picture shows, the centre of the city hasn't always been quite so High - Rise.

The city centre 50 years ago, notice the now demolished Coca-Cola building.

    So where's the Cathedral then?

Uh, here, on the south bank of the river, next to the SouthBank Opera House.

    Sao Paulo Cathedral

The Cathedral sits in a prime position right next to the river.

    North and South

And this wider view shows the Cathedral inbetween the two main River bridges, you can also clearly see the heart of NorthBank.

    What about a University?

      Glad you asked.

    The University District

Here is the University District combining a wealth of cultural and educative institutions for the population.

I love your cities, but I have a suggestion.

There is a building on the STEX from Sao Paulo called the Banespa Building that would go perfectly in your city. There's a few other Sao Paulo landmarks as well like the old Patio de Colegio and an Art Museum. 4.gif
