... Anyone bother to explain what this means? "GPA", "cum laude", the numbers... wha...?

Or is it to do with the American education system, of which I have just about no knowledge at all?

I’m a guy who just can’t guy right.

I don't know what G and P is, but I bet A means average. Cum laude means "with praise" in latin and is a university grade. I'm not too sure what grade though, since no explanation is given to the number (ex. 4 of 6) and because the days the used Latin grades in university is gone in Norway, and they only had three back then: Failed, Completed, and "Laud", meaning an outstanding presentation.

GPA means grade point average. what we Americans do is we give numbers to each letter grade, and average those numbers. the numbers are: 4-A, 3-B, 2-C, 1-D, 0-F. then, once you have your grades, you can find your GPA.

for example, i have gotten all A's and one B in high school. so now, my GPA is about a 3.97.

Congrats! Go pat yourself on the back with a spike-filled baseball bat, and hug a cactus.

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

Well, GPA was just explained, but more on the "cum laude" thing:

There are actually three levels of it- cum laude ("with honor"), magna cum laude ("with great honor"), and summa cum laude. ("with highest honor"). Where the bars for these honors are set varies from college to college, though, there's no standard.

There have also been know uses of egregia cum laude ("with outstanding honor") and maxima cum laude ("with maximal honor").

This practice started in the US at (where else) Harvard University in 1869. The same place which has their documents headed with "Viniversitas Harvard" and puts their diplomas completely in Latin. The amusing part is when they claim to be in "Massachvsettsivm" (treat the v's as u's).

I tell you, you're nuts! N-V-T-S, nuts!

GPA's at the high school level can also be different and go beyond a 4.0. Its bizarre and I am not sure how it worked. But there were always those kids who would get A's in "AP Quantum Calculus" and come out with weird GPA's like a 6.7...

Anyways another interesting thing is that at a college level a 1 is D and technically passing and credit is given, but a semester average under 2.0 is failing and lands you with scholastic probation...so you can't make a D for the semester but you can for a class

Ahhh yes the ever famous 5.0 GPA.

You have to have every single time slot filled with an "AP" (advanced placement university level) class, the details of which I won't go into now, but I've seen students completely fall apart when they couldn't manage the horrendous amount of work such a schedule requires.

So I tell all the kids who want to be Music Majors not to take all those fancy classes and just take the basics and focus mainly on music.........

and their parents hate me for it 3.gif

Ah, not to worry about it. If they don't round, you may very well not get your cum laude. However, if I may impart a bit of aged experience on you here, your GPA from college doesn't amount to a hill of fertilizer after you graduate. It does in rare cases or if you're going on to graduate school, but otherwise, nobody cares.

Better to have the GPA you have and not be one of those 4.0 or 5.0 people who never shut up about it... 30 years after the fact... AAAAAAA!!!

May 17th? Dang dude, I'll just be starting my final exams on May 19th. =|

Oh well. I've already got a good grasp of most stuff, just one bad grade to pull up and three weeks to revise until my eyes pop out.

That is slightly sad in a way.

C/O '08 high school...I graduate on May 19th (just a few weeks away...I'm so excited!). My GPA is 4.0 unweighted, 4.4_ weighted (can't remember the hundredth place). I'm #6 in my class as well, so hopefully that'll get me somewhere. Any other C/O '08 people here?

SimRabbit: I beat you. My GPA for this year so far is a 2.4, my cumulative is a 2.7 and I'm in my Sophomore year of High School.

Oh well, I guess I'll never be good at anything but sax and piano.

... and that's just fine with me! :-D
