CTD...wayyyyy too often.

Alright, well I got a new computer a couple weeks ago and here's my specs...

Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, build 2600)

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU  Q6600 @ 2.4GHz (4 CPUs)

2048MB ram

ATI Radeon HD 3870 (512mb)

Every time I try do something in game it'll CTD.  I try to landscape, sometimes I can make a valley or 2, then it'll crash.  If I try to move the screen around too much, it'll crash.  If I try build some roads, crash.  Any idea what I could change?  I read somewhere that if your graphic card is overkill that it tries to draw too fast and chases the game to crash..? Any truth to that?  Any help would be awesome, I really want to start jamming on this game.

whenever i've had crash issues it's been an issue with my plugins, which i imagine to be the case 95% of the time across the board, see if you have some conflicting issues, use cleanitol and datpacker.

Hi There fox

I had a similar problem on a naked newly installed version on my dual core machine running XP - my fix was to make sc4 run on only one processor on high priority

In case you don't know how to do that:

Open your Taskmanager (CTRL + ALT + DEL)

Switch to processes

right click on the sc4 prozess and change the priority to high

then right click on it again and click on the bottom most entry (is it change affinity?)

A box should open where you can select which CPU the process should run on

perhaps it works for you too

NOOOO.. I thought you had me fixed nanomaus, I did exactly what you said and it was working fine... for about twice as long as normal and it was running quite a bit smoother too. Then it crashed again. 15.gif Any other options? I really want to get to building.

    Hi Fox

First of all Have you installed all official Patches?

I also have 2048 mb ram, but an AMD and a no name graphics card. Since I 'fixed' my SC4 I can run it for hours on end (6 hours was the longest yet) and I havent had one crash yet.

I always run it on CPU0 - perhaps a different CPU will do the trick for you. Or try killing non required processes before starting it.

hope you get to solve it soon, I know how frustrating it can be

I've been having CtDs for a long time no. They were usually triggered by zooming out. When I first got the game I was running a Pentium 4 3.06Ghz with 1.00GB and an Nvidia 5700. I experienced this crash every hour to hour and a half. Recently I bought a new card, an Nvidia 7600, and it started crashing every 20-60 minutes. I tried reinstalling on both cards without and plugins installed, and the problems didn't let up or cease.

So, there probably is some credibility to assuming it has to do with draw speed.

I I have less crashes on my system if I disable the Logitech mouse drivers before going into the game. Might be worth trying if you have a Logitech mouse. It still crashes occasionally but not so often as it used to. I try to save using ctrl-s on a regular basis now and having pressed control-s don't move the mouse or press anything as I've had it freeze on save a few times.

re-install the game. if this doesn't work, consider rebuilding your entire software... means formatting the HDD and start from zero with everything.

a real pain in the ass, I know, but this often helps.

I once had a crash problem with simcity aswell. it allways crashed after a while and it wasn't a plugin issue. and all of a sudden, this happened to almost every intensive application, all ahead games.

don't ask me what it was, but after resetting my whole system, I never had any problems... till my HDD crashed, but that's another story.

    Hi all,

I have a question! After searching and searching where I could post it, I ended up here (still not knowing if I'm in the right topic, though). Anyway: I used to have really anoying crashes. Without any warning and no clear couse (like, clicking on something, placing something), just out of the blue, simcity crashes. No error message, just a plain crash to destop. Very fast too. I never had much plugins except the basics, like nam. So, I deleted my entire plugin folder and there where no crashes. Hurree! Then I read that there was a new version of the NAM: april 2008. I downloaded and installed it and BAM crashes are back... so my question is... WHY?? (cry cry) I hadn't even used it yet! Just installed..... My system specs are: Laptop IBM thinkpad with genuine intel CPU T2400 @ 1,83 GHz, 1,5 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. Windows XP with SP2 installed. I seriously hope someone know whats going on. Or did I miss a depency or something? I read the readme file of the nam and it said really loudly to de

It's not just that. The game crashed when I didn't even used the NAM. I played in a clean region so there really wasn't anything in the city (or region) that wasn't already in the original game. Also when the game crashes it doesn't happen while placing anything, it even happend sometimes while doing absolutely nothing (not even scrolling, zooming or flyin'around). There is also no time indication: sometimes it crashes 5 times in a row after only a few minutes of playing and sometimes not for hours. My cities and region are really small (just started a new one), only 2000 people in it.

I think it's an overload of the CPU. CTD usually happens in my larger cities were a lot of things are going on. Even with a small city this may happen because of the amount of plug-in and building and things going on in game. I really don't know how to solve this problem but more ram may help. Is this the only game that does this or do all older games made before Vista do this?

I don't really play other games but heavy aplications like 3d studio max and autocad give no problems at all. Simcity doesn't crash without the NAM. At the moment that is the only plugin I have. So I'm pretty sure that's whats causing the problem, but playing without the NAM isn't half as much fun 15.gif

SC4 is very touchy.. your pc may not run it with addons.. I'm guessing it is the video card.. on the other hand if the screen size is not 3:4 or greater than 1024x768 you will have to use a video front program .. there are threads describing it.. search for screen resolution or laptop via the search

Hello, the solution is very easy. Run the game -> then got to windowsa (win key) -> then press alt+ctr+del -> choose "Processes" tab -> choose simcity4.exe -> press RMB (right mouse button) -> Set Affinity... -> untick all CPU except of CPU 0 (this should be ticked) -> click OK -> close Win. Task Mgr. -> go back to SimCity 4 -> say bye bye to CTDs 4.gif, You must repeat this action each time you are launching the Simcity 4
