Not sure where exactly to place this question, but here it goes:

is there a way to extract all the original textures (base and overlay) that are used in the game?

I've tried to screen capture them from LOT editor, but it is difficult to find the right zoom to get them 1:1...

what i did when i needed a texture from Xio's pack was opened it in the sc4tool texture tool, and then took a screen capture of the largest image. However, i don't know how to locate the maxis textures, so unless you know where they are, my way isn't of much help.

Open up SC4Tool and Select Texture Scanner from the Analysis menu.

From the "Scan" dropdown menu select "File" and find Simcity2 DAT. If you only see hex numbers select "Pictures" from the "Mode" Dropdown menu. You should see ALL FSH from this DAT. You can find more textures by opening diffrent DATs. Now click on your desired texture and click on the Save Images As menu in the top and choose the type of file you want to save your texture. Once its done it will tell you where to find your textures

It is usually on C:\Program Files\SC4Tool\Export. I think you will get 5 different sizes.

SimRabbit: Can you use that method to find the textures on other games, like Half-life 2 (givin I find the right file)? I have been trying to get some textures for a project of mine. If not oh well, but I figured I would ask. Thanks!

It doesnt take too long on reader, there is only 5 dat files, sort by entry type, find the FSH and hold down the down arrow key till you zip past the one you want. Find it and do screen capture.

SC4Tool doesn't show any images when I select them. At least on my system (Vista).

When I try to click on Save Image as error message pops up saying "Error Saving Image"

In the end I've went the same way that Scipio suggested here. I've found that all the base and overlay textures use same group number - 0986135e and are in Dat2.

    Network textures are in Dat3

Another issue with SC4tool is that it states that textures are 128x128 when in reality they are 127x127 pixels

A problem with the reader and LE is that the border actually cuts off part of the image. I think that they actually are 128x128.

Over the weekend I'll put an entry about textures in the BAT - Mega FAQ, since it comes up a lot, and I know that I personally never remember the answer.

However, depending on the light set up, the texture will need to be adjusted in Photoshop in order to match the textures appearance in the game, if the BATed ground and lotted ground are to be seamless.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(I know this was to Simrabbit but as a half-life 2 player/modder i figured i would put it

in)Sc4 tool will not work on other games that use a different format other then .dats

with fsh files.Half-life 2 is way different now you are talking about .vtf this link here: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=178#p178

will bring you to a program(Vtf Edit)that can open vtf files, you then can extract the images to

the format you want or i guess capture a screen shot of it if you want.

You will need gcf scape to open the games gcf files & extract the vtf files so you can get to

them. You can get Gcf scape on the above site aswell.(The textures for Hl2 Are in the(Source Materials)Gcf file)

The easiest way is to use Dark Matter's FSHMan tool.

Simply extract the FSH file you want from SimCity_2.dat, open it up with FSHMan, and then save the file as a .bmp bitmap file.
