Well, this is the (admittedly limited) portion of the world I've actually been to:

    statemapfeb08sw0.gif

Yeah, that's right, I've never left the US. What;s interesting is that there have been a few opportunities that I could have which I passed up. My mom and my sisters went to London to visit friends one year, me and my dad opted out. The next year, they went to Ireland- me and my dad opted out. The older of the two sisters has also, on two seperate occasions, been to Rome (with her friend's family) and Paris (on a school trip). Both my parents have also been to Italy and to France, and my father can add Belgium to that list, too. So why haven't I ever been to Europe? Quite simple. I hate flying. 7+ hours on a plane is out of the question to me. Hell, when we flew to Denver (and that took "only" 3½ hours), I barely "made it". It's not an issue of fear, it's an issue of boredom. There is nothing to do on a plane but sit in your seat with your thumb up your ass. Even if you're by the window, you get to stare at the tops of clouds most of the time. Not exactly an exciting view (Contrast to driving- I can be in a car all day no problem. That's not boring).  Honestly, if I was ever going to fly to Europe or somewhere that far away, I'd basically either have to do it supersonic or say "okay, hit me with anesthesia and wake me up when we get there". It takes too freaking long to be worth making the trip otherwise.

...well, that, and I refuse to go to a country where they don't speak English unless I'm accompanied by someone who's fluent in the local language and can play interpreter. The idea of having limited ability to communicate with people freaks me out too much.

I've been to five U.S. states: Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. Despite living a little less than an hour from the border, I have yet to visit Mexico.

Okay, seriously, me not having been to Canada is not for lack of interest but for lack of reason. Never found an excuse to go there for anything.

....not to mention that I don't have a passport, so I couldn't just up and decide to go there, anyway. I'd need to get one, first.

...You don't need a passport to get into Canada right now.  That may change depending on which president you elect this year though.

What? Entrance into Canada is governed by Canada, not the US.quote>

Huh?  I know entrance into Canada is governed by Canada, and vice versa for the USA.  My point remains the same though: you don't need a passport to travel between the USA and Canada, all you need is something like a birth certificate or drivers license.

All I was saying is that these rules may change during the next election in the USA.  If the Americans say they need passports, then we need them to have passports too.

Try a three hour flight for a trip that takes one. One hour on the ground (in belts, no computers), 45 min of flying and 1 hrs 15 min circling because of fog. And then use five hours on the return (four on ground). I understand you (especially if you have to deal with crowded American airways. How idiotic are they allowed to be?).

There is nothing to do on a plane but sit in your seat with your thumb up your ass. Even if you're by the window, you get to stare at the tops of clouds most of the time. Not exactly an exciting view (Contrast to driving- I can be in a car all day no problem. That's not boring).quote>

They speak English, just not to Brits or Americans 3.gif But I do prefer German if I can.

I understand that American can go with out a passport for a prolonged period of time, but substitute it for a birth certificate sounds fishy... (Oh, I might make my own ID and safely board planes to the other Nordic countries, but we need pictures).

    Well, my list...

    Norway

    Denmark

    Sweden

    Germany

    Austria

    Italy

    Switzerland

    Poland

    Czech Rep.

    Latvia

    Spain

    Luxembourg

    Belgium

    The Netherlands

Not that impressive, but I do like to stick to countries where they speak at least some German--or Berlin. Need a trip to Tempelhof before they close the beauty.
