breaking news from EA's website.

Sim City Societies Destination will be a simulator in which you give the disk of "sim City Societies" the destination of a trash can.

When asked about this new idea, EA said "Well, since we care so much about our fans, we thought we would make the first expansion pack based off of an idea submitted to us by a SCS lover, Dusktrooper of simtropolis.com".

the diffrence is that SC4 as it came out was a great playing game with loads of potential... which lead to the quick development of an orginized development community. SC:S has not proven that there is interest in developing for it...

EA took a lesson from SC4 and even the sims and applied it incorrectly. the sucess for sc4 was due in large part to its huge ability to be mod'ed and inproved. Though the origional sales wernt huge.. it continued to sell because of these improvements.

So EA being reletivly smart built mod'ability of sorts into SC:S from the start... the thing they missed is that if the base game isnt fun to play... if it isnt fun to paly and hold interest then devoted fans arnt created... and its those devoted fans who would spend countless hours to bring new stuff to a game, but they have to have the intial interest.

SC:S dosnt seem to be gaining that interest.

Your freedom is the most expensive thing you have, even if you arn't the one that paid for it... Use it well.

They've discovered new ways to make the expansion packs contain less and suck more while still putting in a blistering Marketing campaign that will probably cost more than the development. It took over 8 months for Maxis to release Rush Hour but EA have set a new record in how fast they can begin milking this game for all its worth...

bourneid, I believe I've been misunderstood as I wasn't comparing the two games in terms of quality, I was comparing the fans. I was simply arguing against the notion that SC4 players are a "tad bit smarter" because they wouldn't buy numerous expansions. If EA had decided to stay the course with SC4 and pump out a handful of extra expansions -- everyone here would own them all. This is going to happen with fans of anything, regardless of the quality of the original game. Fans of SCS will buy SCS expansions and fans of SC4 will do the same for their game. This is the primary reason why The Sims continues to sell expansion packs -- the fans of the game love it and will continue to buy it -- I highly doubt the majority of those sales are coming from new costumers.

In fact, the dedication of SC4 fans would make one believe that the expansions would sell like hot-cakes. The original is still in the top 10 for goodness sake.

the expansion pack was already ready and finished as SCS came on the market ... be sure about that

and also sure is that there are other ex paks already finished

SCS is a low budget game but a high marketing money maker game

Sadly this seems to be the new marketing strategy for a lot of games.  And like a putz I'll probably end up buying it.15.gif

the new strategie is to have micro transactions...that means u can buy in game some stuff for 1$.

as they money maker recodniced that free games with micro transaction do a 5 times higher turnover than sold games.

so they start to sell games + that feature

EA do that with succer in asia

so u can be sure scs will have that too

The Microsoft touch!
Release an original version of something with tiny but significant faults just so you can sell upgrades for extra profit and you know people will buy it because they need it to make the program run better.
Business sure can be a bi.............

No matter how hard you try, you can't resurrect the dead. Somehow this message obviously hasn't got through to EA yet.

They have released so many expansion packs for the sims that you dont even get to use all of them!

But I guess it wouldnt be too bad if they released as many exp packs for scs.

well - because simcity societies has dropped in price so low (hopefully) - then the expansion pack shouldn't be so expensive - maybe 20 dollars? - i couldn't see 30 since the game itself is almost that low - if not in some places..... besides - it's an expansion pack!

i am happy that a lot of us consumers are more intelligent as the money makers expected and we DO NOT BUY .

May be this will be the reason that they will see that a product has to be good if it should become a financial success.

Back to the roots will be the future i hope and i guess.

The last trying the same was Empire Earth III....same story than SCS

I have to be honest... I kinda like those beaches, and the water park thingy on the screenshots @ simcity.com.

Overall though: SCS sucks big time. No little beaches or neat water parks are going to change that.

Selling an expansion pack chock full of basic stuff to a game that doesn't work in the first place- now that's chutzpah beyond reckoning.

The only thing that would top it would be for EA to sell "The Ultimate Upgrade to Sim City Societies."  You'd buy it, take it home, install it on your computer...

...where it would erase SC:S and reinstall SC4.

Now that would be brilliant.

Breaking News: Simcity Societies Destinations screenshots released. Which means, the game is featured on the official website.

I might say what I think about the screenshots...but EA needs to get more bandwith on their server, because none of them will load 18.gif.

Go to simcity.com and (try to) check them out if you wish...

"New City Pack filled with content and features coming soon!

From unspoiled nature parks with campgrounds and hiking trails to tropical beach resorts with water sports and fine dining, from humble county fairs with hay rides and midway games, to sprawling modern theme parks with all the bells and whistles, you’ll build an entire city based on attracting visitors, and keeping them entertained and satisfied."

Their brief description seems to indicate a large basis on tourism, and attracting guests, blah blah...it sounds more like some tourism tycoon than city building, but I'll probably end up buying it.

I wonder what they will charge for (confirmed in picture captions) 100 new buildings (including UFO crash sites 15.gif) and 35 new special sims (including pilgrims and cult members 15.gif15.gif)?

Just my 2 cents...

The pictues finally loaded; I'll link them so you don't have to go through that devastating flash:

Wow, didn't someone already make that type of comment in another thread?  Let's come up with some new anti-SCS material please.

As for the expansion (errr---city pack),  I did like the caption for the last picture, which says "Expanded transit functionality, including air and water travel."  Considering it's a "city pack", and not an expansion, I think it's only going to have a slew of new buildings and the like.  Nothing too extreme.

Also...what is up with that first screenshot?  Isn't that the public pool?  That's in SCS right now...

To tourniquetism, there are no actual pools in SimCity Societies as far as I can tell but there is an azure terrain texture that looks like pool water.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

ILikeSeattle, I just checked -- there is a venue called "Public Pool". It's identical to the picture for the expansion.
